^One of the best covermount CDs.

A simple and effective compilation: all the big tracks are there.

Awful series. But here you have what may be Oakenfold''s best commercially released mix. It opens with Sasha's Arkham Asylum and everything is in the right place.

I didn't think the series was awful, but it did have some misses. Whenever I did take a chance on the Essential Mix releases, it was usually more because of the tracklisting than expecting anything special with the mixing.

I'd really like to hear what the Jon Carter mix would have to offer - seeing Monkey Mafia on the tracklisting leads me to believe it could be promising, seeing at it would be around the time that Big Beat was blowing up huge.

I found Seb Fontaine's Prototype series for Global Underground to feel like it was really reigned in. But with his work with Perfecto - it really gave him the ability to produce the same kind of excitement he'd bring to a club or gig - kicking out huge bangers and keeping the party moving and busy. This, Type 02 and Perfecto Presents comp he did were awesome.

The first release was a rite of passage. It was staple listening at many after parties. Sasha playing 4 tracks in 40 minutes. Tenth Chapter - Wired.

Re: Half forgotten compilations that are actually pretty good
When there was an explosion of mix cd's being sold in mainstream record stores like HMV and Tower in the late 90's, I was trying to get a feel of what I knew I liked and what I didn't - so there was a lot of hit and miss with my paycheques. And I was moving on from the underground mixtapes era that was coming to an end - I knew the bigger names, but wasn't sure of some of the lesser known UK DJs that North Americans weren't quite as familiar with.

The one thing I did notice was that Cream and the early mixes of Slinky generally seemed like they were trying a different approach compared to the "Let's compile the biggest hits of the year so far and throw them on one comp" philosophy that a lot of Ministry of Sound and other comps were doing. Some of their comps like their Trance Anthems mixes were really well thought out and I got the feeling there was some strategy in how they put it together.

That's not to say that they didn't give in and put out the odd mix that was going for the lowest common denominator, but I found myself liking the Cream mixes a bit more than the other ones that were flooding the market.
many of my weekends back in high school were spent in Tower Records searching through 3 rows of electronic music. almost all of them had a little white "MADE IN ENGLAND" sticker on them and they all costed a pretty penny too. first job at McDonalds just was not enough to fuel my craving... but it helped :)

family would always go to Vegas for Thanksgiving (back in the 90s it was family centered so tons of things for me to do, many arcades) and the Virgin megastore inside the Caesar's mall was a good spot for CD compilations as well.

yeah I check all the usual places for music from my favourite djs quite regular but not seen a new live mix from either of them since the set I found from them back 2 back at Pravda club in 2011.

I posted it here in 2012 but nothing since.....

Most of Hooj's stuff was pretty righteous - they really put out some quality comps.

Nice choice.
