So, I'd been looking forward to last night all week. It seems as though this town has made a 180? turnaround as far as the music scene goes. Now, we're nowhere on par with the likes of NYC, Miami, or LA but I'd say that we're not far behind. I don't think we'll ever rise to their level but we're definitely better (of late) than most.

The weekend really started off for me on Thursday. WARNING! Shameless pat on my own back ahead. I took my Derivatives mid-term and thought it was one of the toughest tests I've taken. Once my brain was through being turned into a gelatinous mass I pressed submit to get my score.....95. Yep, you read right - a 95! Needless to say I was floating on air. That means that my score in the class right now is a 99. I'm pretty amped because it looks as though my 3 classes this short summer semester will land me on the Dean's List once again. <End ego stroking>

Got everything lined up to head downtown to grab a bite to eat and knock back a couple of La Fin du Monde's before heading over to Cleo's for the boys. About 915pm rolls around so Kabir (Localizer) and I pay our tabs and stroll around the corner. Get in and we're the first ones there. Sat up at the bar for a few minutes before Villo decided to stroll in. He immediately started banging out tunes. I've seen Villo a few times now but last night he was on the top of his game. It was the PERFECT warm-up set and he quickly filled the floor.

After Villo threw down Tim Skinner jumped on. This is the second time I've seen him and both times he has been amazing. He laid down nice dark tunes with some really groovy basslines. He played for a good hour and a half at least and I barely moved from standing in the front shaking like an epileptic at a revival. Then the moment came, and the torch was passed to Mr. Fortier who put together a beautiful set. Save for some technical difficulties it was perfect. He ran the gamut as far as sound goes which really showed me that he was playing what he enjoys, not catering to one sound in particular.

Everything said and done, it was a brilliant evening. I can't thank Villo enough for being such a nice guy and always making sure that we're kept up to date with the goings on here in Orlando. You are truely a world-class guy bapi (or whatever the hell you were trying to tell me last night!) And boy can the guy speak Spanish! Lo siento, mi espanol es muy puquito. The highlight of the evening came at the afterparty at Bill Hamel's house. Just sitting in his studio shooting while he, Chris, and Tim talked tunes, production, and touring. It was like a townhall meeting at times with all three of them fielding questions from us, the audience. Thanks to Bill for his hospitality (and having PacMan), to all three guys (Villo, Tim, and Chris) for putting together an amazing evening, and to everyone from [ms] that came out, it was fun. Let's do it again sometime.

-Joe

Can't thank Villo enough for inviting us to this fun event. It's always a good time when he's around. And I want to personally thank Bill for letting us chill at his pad. It was very interesting to hear the comments from everyone. Except for taking a slight detour which cost me an hour lol, everything went well.

Re: Chris Fortier, Tim Skinner, and Villo Last Night in Orla

Sounds like someone took a swim with the dolphins. I must say the place quickly filled up once Skinner hit the decks, nice track selection from him and Chris. Although I don't know how many times I heard the name Ferry Foreskin. Kabir- I finally got a chance to listen to your new track later that night, and I was really impressed. Wish I would have met up with you guys at the bayou.. the evening might have kicked off a bit earlier. And supaz your friggin crazy!!! You must have been havin the best night of all. I just woke up around 8pm... it was a long one.

A lot of thanks go out to Villo and Balance promote for working so hard in Orlando. I can't wait for the next saga!

Damn dude! I took a couple of them at that moment and neither one of them came out. I was pretty pissed. BTW, you gave me your business card and it happens to have some phone numbers written on the back of it. I definitely didn't put them there so I figure that they're yours. Send me a PM and I'll get it sorted out for you.

Those are some really great photos. It's funny that Chris has to promote his label like that. Why didn't he just show up with a fade t-shirt too?

I can't believe that all the dj's are spinning vinyl in those photos!!!

It's funny you bring that up about the t-shirt though because as I was talking to him I told him I thought about wearing my Fade t-shirt and he said he thought about it too. Then I told him not to be "that guy"!

I was talking yesterday to a friend of mine, telling him how surpised I was by the amount of vinyl that was actually spun. I'd say, from what I saw, it was easily 60/40 vinyl over CDs. That just doesn't happen these days!

Re: Chris Fortier, Tim Skinner, and Villo Last Night in Orlando

^^

i am a Fade artist and i like it a lot. i also like to have unique stuff, so my headphones reflect both conditions. i bet if you had a succesful label like Chris does you would promote it too. i dont see anything wrong or cheesy about sporting your own logo... at the Balance WMC party i wore a Balance 007 Tshirt, and generally wear a Fade one to gigs (just as i would wear a MS or Proton one) because not only are they cool and not just anyone has one, but i am also closely related to the mentioned brands

I give you mucho respect for that bro.

BTW, where can one get a balance 007 t-shirt. The cover for that cd is sweet. As smooth as Fortiers mixing. I know if I had a record label you'd probably get sick of seeing me, because everytime you did i'd probably be wearing some article of clothing that had the label logo on it.

Re: Chris Fortier, Tim Skinner, and Villo Last Night in Orlando

is it uber cool to play vinyl now?

are people who play vinyl "old school" and "true" and people who play CDRs "the young, ignorant, and/or unprivelged"?

everyone who prefers vinyl raise your hand and turn around so i can pat you on the back...come on..carry the torch for playing good music but please dont try and deem yourselves "true", "cool", or whatever because you play "vinyl".

i guess chris f. isnt so cool because he played his last song, a classic, from a CDR...i guess he mustve not got that record back in the day...

who DOESNT prefer vinyl? its the natural choice to mix with..but sometimes..alot of times you cant get "that track" on vinyl. dont forget, a CDR is going to sound better too(if its the original full bandwidth song and not a low quality mp3). isnt it foremost about the music? give me the version that sounds better. how many records do you have that sound like ass because the pressing is crap. but NOW in 2005 youre COOL if you have the vinyl? yawwwnnn.

#436315Post 33 of 40

Re: Chris Fortier, Tim Skinner, and Villo Last Night in Orla

Damn killer, take a valium! I don't think it's uber-cool to play vinyl over CDs and I don't trash Ableton. I do, however, think it's nice to go out and watch someone spin vinyl. It takes me back, if you will. I'm no spring chicken and I'm certainly not getting any younger, but it's nice to remember the days of watching the label go around, laying the needle down, etc.

There was a day, albeit a short time ago, when people bitched about CDs this, CDs that. But that day is gone imo. People have embraced the technology. Most people resist change at first, until they realize exactly how it benefits them and how easy it is to adjust. Same goes for Ableton. Notice that the bitching has died down? Life works that way.

My buddy that hung out with us agrees...we were like WTF happened to that night?

What a freakin blowout evening. Villo, Tim, and Chris were on top the game. Just dropping some nasty bumpin dark shite!

I need another night like this NOW!

Re: Chris Fortier, Tim Skinner, and Villo Last Night in Orlando

vinyl vs CDs is an OLD tale, it began in 1990 with the first Dennon players w pitch. i had those. i have been sponsored by Stanton to promote Final Scratch, which i have used in my gigs (i have even played all FS sets) i dont think im uber cool for playing vinyl (I just am ) but really, its like now someone makes a comment about a preference, and it gets all deviated into a hot topic about whether this is this or that is that, and true this and old skool that...

i am probably the oldest skooler in this forum (or one of them) but i dont think it makes me anything else but that...

besides there would be no new skool, without the old...and no matter how 'old skool' you are, there is always someone who showed you the way once...
