Supreme Court gives Medical Marijuana the Thumbs Down

Taken from the associated press today:

WASHINGTON - Federal authorities may prosecute sick people whose doctors prescribe marijuana to ease pain, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, concluding that state laws don?t protect users from a federal ban on the drug.

The decision is a stinging defeat for marijuana advocates who had successfully pushed 10 states to allow the drug?s use to treat various illnesses. Justice John Paul Stevens, writing the 6-3 decision, said that Congress could change the law to allow medical use of marijuana.

The closely watched case was an appeal by the Bush administration in a case involving two seriously ill California women who use marijuana. The court said the prosecution of pot users under the federal Controlled Substances Act was constitutional.

?I?m going to have to be prepared to be arrested,? said Diane Monson, one of the women involved in the case.

This is really lame, the supreme court is over stepping the states that have said that it is ok to use marijuana with a doctor permit. Now, these sick people who have a license to smoke can be busted by the man. Talk about being ass raped.

Re: Supreme Court gives Medical Marijuana the Thumbs Down

This is somewhat upsetting to me considering that I generally identify with the conservative right on many issues. This is one here though, I'll have to disagree with the Supreme Court's decision and the conservative beiliefs about legal pot. I believe that the court based their decision on the laws concerning interstate commerce, which, when you think about it, does make some sense. When states have the right to chose on their own whether or not its legal, it creates a major problem concerning interstate commerce between neighboring states of a black market/or (depending on where you are from) legitimate market good. Instead, I wish they would just let it be federally legal, solving the interstate commerce problem, and tax it. If it helps people in pain, great, if people want to be potheads, let them. Conservative used to mean small government, less interference with personal life. That is until the ultra-right Bible beaters decided that Americans would be better off following their moral beliefs. This kind of situation makes people like me, who still consider themselves conservatives, feel a little alienated.
