We just have been informed that a board member (with zero posting) has posted direct links to Hernan's Metrodance sets hosted on our Site on Hernans board. This means we have somebody or several people on the board who steal the links and pass them to others who do not belong to our community. As we do not rape other people's Servers but actually PAY for the bandwith we will not tolerate this.

The guy we caught will be banned from the site and the same will happen with every other "member" we catch posting links to others or in the worst case on other Sites. Our members are registered on a lot of Sites so you can be sure that we find out about every posting, no matter if it was made in Nigeria or somewhere on the North Pole. I don't care what those people's intentions are, if it happens with purpouse or if they think it won't make a difference or just don't know what they do. Everybody we catch will be banned and if we find out that people continue to steal our bandwith, we will just stop hosting sets for free.

Bastards. There must be a way to stop this sort of thing.

Hanging is too good 'em.

#430198Post 3 of 55

I agree folks, this practise (we felt had nearly died out) has been bought back up again. Absolutely uncool. Not only do you ruin the possibility of being banned from this forum, you might even lose the downloads from being hosted on the site again.

We once again urge you to respect the effort (not to mention the amount of money) we put into the sites and that peeps will let us know when others abuse such facts...

Same here, everything is fine as far as I can see.

As for the scamming fuckers: how can people still think they can do this and not get caught?? [mn] is so huge now, with so many peole on so many different boards, somebody is bound to notice. Oh well, they're caught and banned and hopefully no one else with think they are being "cool" by trying to rip our hard working admins off.

#430293Post 17 of 55

The beauty of the internet is also the problem of the internet: You get to meet all sorts of people from all over the world that you would never have met before. Some are really cool, and some total losers.

Re: Stealing our bandwith

i am new to this board but wanted to double check, so we cannot link/share music files here?

#430629Post 29 of 55

Re: Stealing our bandwith
i am new to this board but wanted to double check, so we cannot link/share music files here?
First of all, welcome. Be careful this place can get very addictive!

To answer your question, we provide exclusive mixes to our members and someone was taking the links to the actual sets (from our 'Downloads' page) that are provided free of charge and posting them on another board. The correct way to handle this would've been to post a link to www.mercurynation.com on that board to tell people that a particular DJs mixes are available here.

There is another section of this board here: http://www.mercurynation.com/forums/index.php?f=9 where you can paste links for sites that contain mixes. For example, if there was a mix available on John Digweed's site for download, you could let everyone know in that forum by posting a link to www.johndigweed.com and telling them where to go to get the mix. We don't allow direct posting of other people's mixes though, so make sure you just point to the site.

And as I'm sure you are already aware, we absolutely DO NOT tolerate sharing/linking of pirated/copywritten material.

Hope that helps. Now just sit back, tune in to the radio stream, engage in some discussion and enjoy!

Re: Stealing our bandwith

real idiots but some of them think like this why post and be a part of this comunity all day when i cand post till i have the necesary amount to get the links and after that they dont care they have the links and they dont need nothing else .... only a verry stupid person could do something like that in my opinion ... they dont pay anything to download the sets from here they dont do nothing just post whats so damn hard i dont understand ....

and why dont u try to make the downloads availabe just for the ips that have the privilege to do so ? like that u ca prevent others who dont care what MN is and what it does to download the sets , they can have the links as much as they want but if they dont have the privilege to download from them they just can`t , and u will not have that kind of problems :) think about it :!:

#430737Post 31 of 55

Re: Stealing our bandwith

Sometimes it's just hard to imagine that people do that!

Where's the whole thought of the community? There are loads of ways to get good music on your pc - why rape a bunch of people and the idea behind the community? Unbelievable! :x

TomTom: I'm behind you & admins to stop this nonsense!

Re: Stealing our bandwith

I don't want to be a badass here, but instead of kicking asses, there should be a solution for avoiding this. I'm not quite sure how this happened, since for downloads you need to post a few, as far as I understood. So I guess, the person who linked directly the file on mercuryserver knew exactly the file url, from someone else maybe?

Anyway, since we are sitting on a board, which is half of very good coders (the engine board), there must be a solution to hide real links to donwloadable files. Masking or anything, like an e-commerce solution. I guess it is hard to implement on phpboard, but my view is, it is better to place controls, and not (only) rely on ppl.

Anyways, just my two cents :)

Discussion...so is that what they call the wanking we do around here nowadays??

#431051Post 34 of 55

Re: Stealing our bandwith

I agree with FeralCode. If, by chance, there is a way to hide links to downloadable files, I think it's a legitimate idea to pursue it.

#431078Post 35 of 55

Re: Stealing our bandwith

you dont need to hide the links just restrict the access to them by adding a script that recognizes the ips that have access to the downlods a simple ex is my ip is 81.196.55.210 now i cant access downloads because i didnt get to the amount of posts to access the download page ,if i have the links i could download them no ? so u put a script to recognize ips and when it will c my ip he will know that i dont have the access to download, its verry simple ,your in the database as an activ poster and such u can download if u aren`t bye bye .... if u do this what can they do with the links ?

Good point FeralCode. Of course it would be better if we could trust people, but life ain't like a fairytale...
