didn't have the chance to listen to the full thing so I skipped a few parts, and yeah this is well varied in places, but the rest is the same tech house plodding as most of the current sets, but I'll try to listen to more Shackleton, maybe I can find something really good, thanks for the lead

Re: Eclecticism no more

I think that if you're looking for eclectic dj sets, you're not going to find a lot of them being live sets, unless it's under some pretty specific circumstances.

Most club venues are going to want the dj to play stuff that's a bit recognizable, a bit new and overall pretty high energy, unless they're promoting a dj playing a "one of a kind set" (which usually means it's not so much a club experience, as much as it's more of a concert). The more eclectic sets are usually more reserved for home listening I find, and now come more often in the form of a studio mix or a podcast.

There are dj's taking risks out there, Armand Van Helden just put out a 3CD mix w/ Ministry of Sound and it's nothing like anything he's ever done - one disc is a very Masters At Work flavored house music set, the second disc is a lot of 80's rock and ballads that influenced him and the last disc is almost all 80's freestyle. It's not everyone's cup of tea (I personally fucking hate freestyle and it's immortality), but I think of it being similar to Danny Howell's chillout set from 2002.

I think also the genre of music you're looking for is also going to dictate whether the target audience is going to be receptive to someone that breaks away from the expected sounds and songs that are going to be played. You can't really take the same risks if you're a dj that plays more progressive house that you could if you were a turntablist minded dj like Coldcut or DK or a breaks dj like Krafty Kuts, where being experimental is part of the expectation.

If you want eclecticism, you're probably going to have to look outside of the genres and djs you like best and try out other genres that you might not be as receptive to. I find that you're more likely to be rewarded with what you're looking for when you venture further outside of your comfort zone, even if you need to sift through a lot of stuff that you might not like immediately.

Armand played Hip Hop on the terrace at Space back in 2000 and it didn't go down well. Saying that I was at Space last year and someone was playing Drum & Bass in one of the side rooms.

Re: Eclecticism no more

I see that being a two part problem - the venues and the crowds that attend are often not going to be open to something new, unless it's promoted in that manner. Back in 2000, they were probably expecting Van Helden to drop U Don't Know Me and The Witchdoctor, rather than what he was working on at the time (his Enter the Meatmarket/Sampleslaya album - hip hop oriented instrumentals). Same thing could be said with how Vegas booted DJ Shadow.

Our community can be notoriously insular at times and very closed minded about other genres. You can't treat a crowd that listens exclusively to trance or progressive the same way you would a crowd that listens to breaks, electro, drum and bass or whatever other genre that can be pretty far removed from your core audience. People say that they want something different, but not something too far removed from what we find familiar and in our comfort zone.

Re: Eclecticism no more

So Tug, you basically want a set played by a progressive house DJ, that play's house, trance, techno, minimal, breaks, D&B, speed garage, gabba, etc, it doesn't have a straight percussion (4 4 beat) to it, but somehow all fits together and flows. LOL. Is that the long and short of it?
