Re: Good times for music
it's really nice to see so many new names in the genre, but sometimes it's so difficult to follow them all that it feels more like a job than the leisure
I like to look out for new stuff but there is no bigger pleasure than going back and revisiting old favourites, I feel so relaxed letting my ears sink into familiar sounds
anyway, thanks for the list, achtung

I know what you mean... Music is so attached to memories that is reasonable to look back with nostalgia.. But this is in fact another reason why i think there is amazing music out there nowdays.. I enjoy it more than ever and it's certainly not attached to memories since i nearly don't go out anymore.. :)
Re: Good times for music
i'll definitely agree with guy j and ricky ryan! they are my two current favorite djs. I wish ricky put out more like he used to, but what we do get from him is special, for sure. I've heard most of the others you listed too. just not as in tune as I once was... that could be the problem. thanks for sharing, though. :)
yerg, great point. I find myself going back and listening to more old sets these days to artists that I used to go see regularly. trying to keep up with the new stuff just seems to take up too much time.

totally agree, except my list is much shorter heheh...
andrew weatherall, harvey, coyote…and a few others sum it up for me
Re: Good times for music
i find it interesting that my tastes in music has only evolved with electronic/house music. when it comes to hip hop or rock i dont find anything worth listening to much past my high school years (i graduated in 99, talk about peak time period for just about everything). i think with house, it constantly changes for the better and doesnt rely on yesterdays hit.
my opinion is that 2013 was amazing in terms of new music, 2014 was good but not as much, not sure about 2015 yet, but i also think it might have to do with the fact that i am busier than ever with life and work that i miss alot of great new music.
Re: Good times for music
Saw Sasha, Chris Leibing, Tale Of Us, Luciano and Anja Schneider this weekend, all of them were pretty good. Jimmy Van M's last mix has been played about 5 times now. I can't often say that about a mix.
Re: Good times for music
JVM mix is the long one?

Totally agree. Cant stand the new stuff, with a couple of exceptions, in those two genres. New electronic music just continues being good.
Re: Good times for music
While I may be an ambient fiend, I do love Ricky Ryan/Hisham Zahran's mixes these days - they really do it for me.
Will be sure to check out some of those mentioned earlier in the thread ;)
I think there has been an incredible amount of quality ambient mixes last few years and some truly wonderful tracks.

Re: Good times for music
I think, Since the late 90s, we are living a great period and consecutive years of great music, productions and some great talents, There is so much music out there, of course there is a lot of shit, but the quality in these days is great after many years of minimal-tech-house or whatever you call it. Im glad to hear many many good tracks every single week. I hope the quality keep growing.
Re: Good times for music
not one mention of Eelke Kleijn in this thread yet.....
the guy has been one of the most consistent DJs/producers in the past few years
Re: Good times for music
^^He was playing at a club I was at last Friday night. It was in a rooftop smoking roof. The sound was so bad I couldn't stay. He was playing good music , but you couldn't hear him properly. It was like having a radio in a distant corner. :( And I have wanted hear him for years. :(
Re: Good times for music
I have purposely tried to listen to as much 'new' music as I can via Soundcloud and Spotify, and you know what, I find it all very mundane and boring at the moment. I have listened to the current in vogue DJs such as Dixon, Guy J, Maceo Plex and I just cannot see the hype around these guys?
Even the old favourites such as Dave Seaman, Hernan and Nick Warren are very hit and miss for me these days. The one DJ who I have found an interest in is Agoria, but even he can play some stuff that I switch off from.
I'm not sure if it's because 'I'm getting older' as I am still listening to the same volume of music as I did 15 years ago.
On the Bedrock messageboard they are talking about the recent Bedrock night in London and all the classic tracks that were played. What are the classics of today, or the last 4 years? I don think I could name 5 tracks that stand up against those classics from the 1998-2005 era
Can anyone recommend a DJ who plays decent music with vocals - and I dont mean the cheesy Hed Kandi music, I mean the kind of decent vocal music that must still exist out there?

I wouldn't go that far.

Which is quite funny as he was beating off about DJ's playing tracks that everyone knew in some interview the same week.

I think that venue he played at kind of required that nostalgic vibe.. in fact more credit to him for doing that. He played a relentless 5 hour set the week before here in SF and I didn't recognize a single track.
Also, its one thing to play ~15 old "hits" in a 5 hour set and another to play 20 in a 90 min set, which is what he was referring to I think.
That's my take anyway.

I would have to partially agree... there is good new music out there, but very few memorable tracks that have the potential of becoming "classics"

But the DJ's he was slagging don't have a repertoire that dates back 20 years. It would be like asking Digweed in 92 to play some classics.
Re: Good times for music
Was listening to an interview by the founder of Bonnaroo and Big Ears festival on the radio yesterday, the latter being a mostly experimental music type festival and he was saying basically the same thing as this thread title. People are far more open to different music now.

maybe try Henry Saiz, he's on fire lately, his sets aren't vocal heavy exactly but he throws a few decent vocal tracks here and there, basically it's just very beautiful smooth music for almost any kind of mood

Yeah forgot to add that I have listened to some of Henry's sets and have enjoyed them. He did a short 30 minute Group Therapy mix which is right up my street. Surprising really as I thought his Balance CD was a real let down!

We are older, we are living in a different era and we have to adapt. I felt the same as you a couple of years ago, till I found my place again, I hear a lot of good tracks and good sets, specially hernan, there are many good things out there, you just have to find the right direction.
I would have liked to be there at the bedrock party with all those classics., I love the classics. but thats is another reflection.
Re: Good times for music
I'm spending more on Beatport than I ever did. :) If anything I am finding too much good music. It has changed some but that is what progressive music is all about. :)
Saw Guy J a couple of weeks ago and even with a shit sound system, I heard what the hype is all about !! :D Brilliantly beautiful music and then turns it to dancefloor music. The only better Dj as far as I am concerned is Hernan and every time I see him he just gets better. !! Actually that applies to both Guy and Hernan
