Proper stuff with hypnotic vocals and an addicting beat.

Re: John Digweed live in?

No doubt, everything about that track is great, but the vocal ruins it for me. Diggers has a knack for dropping tracks like that though, so I just deal with it :)

I'm 10/90 on most vocal tracks.

Absolutely can't stand tracks like this on Argentina:

But I really like this track on London:

Still the best live DJ i have seen till this day. Reads the crowd, and if you;re sober enough to catch his mixing skills, minds are blown.

He was really good with touches of greatness. :) They picked a couple of wonderful locals to support him, Phil K and Jamie Stevens really did us proud !! :D I had a really great night. !! :D But the general consensus from the people who went to see both Hernan and Digweed was that Hernan was a level above this year. That's why I keep nagging you. I would so love for you in particular to experience his music. I'm so sure you would like him. I think he would probably like you too !! :) I can't believe how he just keeps getting better. Well, actually I probably can  , he just works so hard at it !!

Apparently Montreal was a legend in waiting and that's what it ended up !! :D I may make that my next big trip. :)

Re: John Digweed live in?

^ I've seen Hernan live twice and he was great both times, but to be honest he seems to have perfected a "comfort zone" and he kind of just hangs there, where Digweed would venture out of his and smoothly blend different styles into one journey.. its more engaging, at least for me :)

#1733514Post 93 of 253

Re: John Digweed live in?

Agree 100% on all of the above,

He played a garden party here in Sydney, couldn't have asked for a more perfect mix, irrespective of the pony weather.

Never felt anything like that . Digweed I have seen 6 -7 times over the years and I have been impressed 2 1/2 times. He always seems to have to faff around a little , sometimes a lot, to get into a set . I hate just standing on the dancefloor. Hernan has done that once that I can remember. And I remember clearly because it was so unusual, I love the way I feel as his sets begin and unwind.

I saw 4 of Hernan's gigs over 8 days and it took ME way out of any comfort zone , let alone Hernan . People run into each other at parties and just say "The Boat !! " and we know exactly what they mean. All four were different and amazing in their own right.

^I get that. Hernan is a good dj, and obviously has his niche and fans, but his music has never really been my kind of thing- it's like going to see a PG movie.

Don't really see it as a competition.

Both responsible for amazing sets this year : different DJs but both with the same passion.

#1733552Post 97 of 253

kind of different styles really, perfect situation would be Hernan playing with diggers to follow which i was lucky enough to experiance at vagabond a while ago, forget what year 06 maybe

Hernan and John are amazing, ok, Hernan is best for me, but, why we are comparing ? both are on top.

Plus I wanted to get across to Chanty how much she is missing

Re: John Digweed live in?

Cattaneo's live sets are rather for stoned students whereas Digweed's mixes are for heavy party drunkards - that's the main difference.

When does DIgweed play different styles of music? I can't say I have ever heard different genres in his sets. The style he starts with is the style he finishes with, the only difference is the tempo. If there is a set where he has don this, point me in its direction.

#1733632Post 103 of 253

Re: John Digweed live in?

The old Tenaglia, now that was different styles. Start with some Garage, move into some House, then some Progg followed by Trance or Techno, climaxing with some Classics.

You only need to looks at the variety across Bedrock releases this year.

His style is never going to jump around with massive polarity in a set, there will always be an element of control to keep things tight and building. Certainly don't expect to hear any garage, but you'll get the odd Prince track on a boat party.

Music wise .. everything from dub techno, ambient and deep house, to tech house, old style dark prog, German stuff, Detroit House, Argentinian producers and the latest from a small night in Honolulu, up front bangin' techno to the odd vocal, indie/nu disco track and a bit of acid, he'll drop an unmastered demo he's got the night before to close a set at Space, bring out obscure and forgotten tracks from the 90's and fit them in so they sound current .. all blended with the touch of a master craftsman. New labels and artists appearing all the time.

I'd hate it if a DJ just played a variety of styles for the sake of it i-pod shuffle stye. That's why a listen to a range of people who I consider are creative and at the top of their game.

But if I want to hop genres totally I go and listen to some jazz C.

Basically house and techno then! (And I haven't heard much house in Digweed's sets in a long time) It's like potential and reality, potentially you're listening to lots of different genres, in reality you're listening to hundreds of varieties of the same old shit.

Re: John Digweed live in?

Plus the odd peruvian pipe band minimal collaboration w. hungarian gypsy strings and percussion from an Andes cordillera quartet playing instruments they've hand crafted themselves.

Villalobos 32 min rmx out soon on Perlon ;)

Re: John Digweed live in?

There IS variety in a Digweed set depending on the night and crowd he's playing to, he doesn't throw random shit at the floor. And his sets on a whole vary across different nights/tours, even the programming.

For the sake of discussion the variety can be narrower compared to the likes of Laurent Garnier but isn't that the purview of progressive house? The tracks have to blend together. Perhaps if all you hear is 'basically house and techno' the DJ is doing a better job than you give him credit for.

I rate Cattaneo somewhere between Howells and Digweed, sometimes easy listening fluff, sometimes, subjectively, 'proper' danceable music. Like go0gle and Jenks said, Cattaneo on the whole feels safer and more PG to me, he's never pushed it to the point where I might go 'holy fuck what was that', certainly not as many times and the way Digweed has.

On the flip side some Digweed sets just can't be enjoyed sitting in a car or at the desk.

They're all different DJs, like Nick Warren, can't really compare them. If they all deliver consistently then it's the set and setting that changes the perception of and how the music is received.

Or he is playing the genre he is associated with. What about Paul Woolford? That guy is four genres in one day.

#1733665Post 111 of 253

Re: John Digweed live in?

No, I'm not here to convince you otherwise, that was my POV and it's subjective :) If you're curious enough you can seek out the readily available sets yourself, otherwise it's me/us trying to convince you of something you've already made up your mind about; and taste being so subjective this will a zero-sum game.

Re: John Digweed live in?

So point me in the direction of one of these genre jumping sets. It should be easy enough, I haven't the time to wade through 15 years of Transitions sets. I listen to a lot of music, but I can't say I have heard anything to put DIgweed in this genre jumping bracket that people are proclaiming.

I did, I'm asking you for the data. Back your statement up. There are 966 Digweed sets on Mixesdb please tell me which one is this genre jumping moster.

#1733671Post 115 of 253

I can give you examples from genre jumping DJ's if you want.

Re: John Digweed live in?

Oh all to easy. Paul Oakenfold, genre jumping in 1997, he managed to do a whole Essential Mix of Breaks and drum & Bass. He even did a GU of of genre jumpin.

Re: John Digweed live in?

Zover, you're coming across as someone who has made up his mind about Digweed and is asking me/us to convince you otherwise.

You fail to understand that it's not my responsibility to do so. We exchanged opinions on a matter that is entirely subjective. Music is not 'data'. What might be eclectic to me might not be to you, our idea of house and techno might vary, and what I consider to be a good eclectic set might be a bad eclectic set to you.

And even if we agree on a good eclectic set from Digweed, it could be a one-off—it won't be enough to change your mind wholly about Digweed. Digweed is not the kinda eclectic DJ I compare with Tenaglia or Garnier.

I don't follow DJs like Howells or Holden or Troxler et al closely but I'll check out their sets if the mood suits me to hear what they're playing these days.

If you want to keep an open mind about it then feel free to dip in and out of the Transition sets, they're out every week. There's no need to go through the entire back catalog.

There's enough music out there you don't have to be convinced to like something you don't.

#1733679Post 119 of 253

Re: John Digweed live in?

Laurent Garnier live in Russia 2005, again managed to go from techno to psychedelia then drum and bass.
