Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

sounds like a plan - thanks man - I am perhaps most excited about st peters. and you are right, it does seem overwhelming, with so much to see. thanks for the tip about Florence. I think we are only doing 4 days in each unfortunately. I hope we make it to London, but that may be stretching things too much with that short amount of time :/.

*edit - 4 days in each - 8 total

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

Florida, you can find below my favourites from last summer's holiday travel destinations. Forget Paris, Parisians hate tourists, the Americans in particular - you won't understand it. Germany is mostly underrateed and comparing to northern Italy and the south of France it's extremely cheap. And any German speak English which is rare in France and Italy. Rent a car and go on your own.

Colmar, France

Passo del Maloja, Switzerland

Portofino, Italy

Monte Carlo, France

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

Why does every one say Parisians hate tourists??? Been to paris twice and always been treated wonderfully. A Parisian I spoke to on the street taught me how to use the laudromat  I don't speak french. :)

I loved Paris. !! :D I found the Louvre overwhelming and very crowded. The Musee d'Orsay was incredibly beautiful. Much sexier :)

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

Some Parisians, not all, were pretty rude to me when i was there. Even a cop when i tried my best in french to ask a question when i got lost. Everyone i've talked to that has been there has had similar experiences. I even have a french friend here in Nola who agrees that many Parisians are rude towards Americans.

my manager had similar experiences when she visited last month, she said even though she tried her best at speaking French.. most would not help her and her husband or make fun of them even.

funny contrast, my parents were recently in Fiji and they said everyone there were the best ever, hospitable to the 10th degree, one of the workers at their resort even invited them over for dinner with his family one evening.

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

I've got a friend here who's from Paris - he's one of the nicest people I know. We are going, mostly because my wife really wants to, and several of my friends (women) have said it's their fav city in Europe.

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

i'd have no qualms about going back. and i'd even say that it's a must see city. but having traveled as much as i have, to me, there are more interesting places. your wife will love it i'm sure. it was a must see for me and my first stop the first time i went to europe.

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

Any specific experiences you really enjoyed about Rome or Paris, that may not be obvious, I'd especially love to hear about

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

When you go to the Vatican City (or any church in general), be sure to wear pants and something to cover shoulders for women. A lot of tourists get turned away for inappropriate clothes. And eat fresh french bread, it's amazing. I would buy a fresh loaf like every day.

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

$$$ thanks Rawr. :) and thanks again Bender for all the good info. I have a friend from egypt that travels the world and is used to mixing with many different cultures and is widely accepted wherever he goes. However, his experience in Washington DC was not a good one, more than a handful of people treated him in a way that he felt was very rude and disrespectful. So when he arrived in Florida, he was a little discouraged by his experience in DC. And this is a guy whose passport gets more use than any person I have ever met. Point being, it doesn't take much to color someones perspective of a new or different culture/city negatively, and it's normal. I've heard many people say they did not like Paris because of the people.

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

If you ever get a chance to check out some night life in Paris, make sure you check out the Rosa Bonheur. It is off Botzaris via the metro. That's about as much as I enjoyed in Paris. Everything else was either too busy, with rude people, and never really got a chance to get around around much within France. I'm sure there are wonderful places around France.

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

thanks bud. was hoping for a few recommendations in Paris and Rome. Hope we get lucky with some decent dj's while we're there as well.

"concrete" looks interesting in Paris via that video I posted above.

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

Leaving on Wed :). Tripadvisor has a great app that doesn't require internet, for maps, etc etc. Really looking fwd to spending time in these cities that I've admired my whole life but never been to. Hope to take some incredible photos while I'm there, gonna be a bit of a pain lugging my camera around, it's not light, but will be worth it. Reading a lot about pick pockets, if some kids tries to steal my shit, is it ok if I kick their face?

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

There was a video about Concrete on youtube I think it was by RA, I'm not really sure... I remember watching it, anyone know what I'm talking about? It was about the club opening, being on a boat, in the water, changing the club culture of Paris, etc.

found it:

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe
By far I had the most fun in Paris. I can't wait to go back; but only after I learn to speak French fluently. I'm looking into a couple of classes for that as we speak. London was a lot of fun as well. Rome was just mind blowing. Venice was something that was definitely nice to see, but that will be the last time I go. It's turned into a bit of Disney World there. Full of t-shirt stands and immigrants selling fake handbags, etc. A few too many tourists for my taste.

Thanks for all of the kind words. We're just awaiting the wedding photographer to get back to us with the portfolio he's put together and then I'll have some more to share.

:Bingo:

Well FO, I think before you start on locations it depends on what you want to achieve out of your holiday. Having done my fair share travelling, I always make a little plan on what I want to experience. Be it, am I going for:

 • cultural experience
 • scenic experience
 • religious/spiritual

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

I'd bet your world-traveler friend from Egypt came to America with some preconceived ideas about Washington D.C. so his negative experience simply matched up with those inner feelings/fears of his.

You're going to have a great time in Europe because you're approaching the trip expecting inspiration (& closeness w/wife) and you're preparing to be inspired by the culture, nice people, beautiful scenery, stunning historical vibrations, excellent food to eat, all new things for each of your senses. Just line up with those thoughts and let it all unfold in ways that will surprise & delight you!

It'll be so fun, next time you'll want to take Kiwi

I messed up with the scheduling, so we leave Paris the morning of the 8th, and Dixon is that evening, im pretty pissed about that....I really wanted to go to Concrete. Then there is Trentmoller at YOYO, which I am down to go to but we have a night bike ride planned that goes until 11pm, it's 4 hours long, and I have to be up to spend that quality time with my wife at the Vatican museum....

Re: 2nd but really first trip to Europe

Unbelievable luck there FO, really unbelievable. Your quest to one day visit a nightclub seems doomed at every turn. Imagine travelling halfway round the world and being so unlucky as to find Paris closed for the week. You say you wanted to go to Concrete?? Are you saying you don't want to go any more? Or has mrs Fo put the brakes on?

I'd be very wary of going out anywhere if the djs aren't people who figure in the dj mag top 100 poll, very wary indeed. Moreso if you have an enormous camera....

My wife and I did something similar with Bender420 on our last night at Sonar a few years back. No. 19 party, then straight to the airport. I agree though, it's not for everyone
