How do you organise your music? by artist, genre, or something else?

I'm particularly interested in how the DJs among you organise your tracks. I've tried various ways of sorting mine out, genre, artist name, most recent, playlists, different phases of a set but nothing seems to work. I always feel like they're all over the place and seem to forget tracks that I shouldn't - they always seem to be somewhere else when I need them.

Re: How do you organise your music?

I have a folder that is live mixes, then any dj commercial mix is listed under the djs name folder

thats how i store it at least. I've uploaded everything to google play music so i can listen to any mix at anytime.

doesnt help you i know but its how i do it as a regular ol listener lol

Re: How do you organise your music?

Highly unorganized... most of my music is!

Back in the day... Every track was labelled and tagged ... Year-month-day-artist-track in individual little folders. I have never enjoyed iTunes ... So I tried Winamp, Media monkey and song bird. Still nothing works for me as I had my music spanning 3 or 4 various HDD's ... Now that I have a NAS... Do you think that I would find that time to dump all my shite in there?

Re: How do you organise your music?

it's difficult to organize mp3 files hehehe I have them by artist name. My CDs are organized by genre, but CDs are easier to find or search, imo

iTunes is shocking.

Re: How do you organise your music?

I currently use foobar to play and collate my music, and isyncr to transfer from itunes to my android devices for the go. iTunes is pretty tripe.

I'm thinking of testing musicbee - MusicBee - Music Manager and Player

But definitely categorised by by artist, and I've also created some mood tags on foobar (foobar2000: Components Repository - Masstagger). Helps, if I'm either feeling: #down, #blue, #moody, #excited, #anxious, #fuckingwhatever.

EDM wise, also helps categorise by compilation, live mix, radio show, podcast. Which again helps.

Re: How do you organise your music?

It seems most systems require you to tag. I find it just as easy to make folders in playlists So I have Artist , sets and albums. Easy. :)

Re: How do you organise your music?

my organization is quite tripe to be honest...

i download everything to my desktop.. so when that fills up with icons, i just dump everything to Music# folder. when my hard drive space runs out, i go through everything--if i am not going to listen to it again at least twice, it goes to the trash, then i dump everything to an external, by year.

again, pretty rudimentary and really relies on two limits, desktop space and HD space lol as i just do not have time to keep up on a continuous basis.

Re: How do you organise your music?

I keep all together without an order, I Use a program to find what I need. Thats all ...

Re: How do you organise your music?

^^ Which program ??

#1731813Post 12 of 20

Re: How do you organise your music?

^^^^

A program called "where is it" is very simple and easy to use. keeps the info of the harddrive, cd, dvd or whatever, without the content, just to read, so, You search whatever you wants and the software tells you the location. there may be many programs like this and betters but I like this one,

This I need to learn....

I can't seem to trash anything.. I always find that since my music tastes change periodically.. something that I did not enjoy last year.. could be pretty darn brilliant this year... I am mood music person.. hence rather difficult to chuck anything away...

I agree and share that feeling. I usually buy CDs that one day, that day, I get into.

Spotlight on my Mac does that.

This.

I have a very intentionally lazy organization of music, there is some order, but there is also some randomness. I usually either know what I want to listen to, in which case spotlight, or just browse randomly, and listen to something, which requires no order. I don't find a meticulous music organization style suits me. It's all there, sometimes I let it surprise me. My record box was always the same way. I'd pack it with records I wanted to play at a gig, but never any kind of order- just "I'm playing stuff from this box." It always worked itself out that way, and my home listening collection is assembled the same way.

Same here, I find it impossible to throw anything away - only thing is I am left with masses of music that in reality I won't listen to anytime soon :)

Re: How do you organise your music?

^^ Part of the not trashing is my obsessive thing about sharing, someone else might want it

You can only listen to so much but every now and then I will go way back to listen to something from years ago. It's nice :)
