Unfortunate reality unless people pay to use these services.
Re: ello
Is VC being involved that big a deal that it would deter people from joining? What's the real risk? That member's personal information will be/has been sold, therefore, it's not worth joining? Create an email address and don't use your whole name, problem solved or not?
Understandably, people who create & maintain these sites have to pay their bills like everyone else and rarely is a far-reaching social media site going to be as pure as that manifesto described, although it's a lofty idea I like, it's pretty unrealistic in our world that is commerce driven. Even a site such as this that accepts donations, there is embedded business being generated if only through music being promoted, concert tickets sold, etc. I have no problem with being a consumer & paying artists of all kinds. If a group of inventors, programmers, etc. has to go to VC to fund their efforts, why do we have a problem with that?
I'm just asking because I don't know the answers. :D
So the guy who said goodbye to Ello is creating "Ind.ie" has anyone checked his out? https://ind.ie/ His team of 5 is asking for public funding.
I just don't get the "be afraid, be very afraid" mentality of corporations marketing to people; they've been doing that all our lives even when our children go to the movies; they create jobs, people earn livings, create wealth, so? As long as they don't intrude too much or are annoying, I don't mind all that much. Am I missing something?
Re: ello
Its all sounds a bit personal to me...
They could in theory payback or buyback what they own..$435k is nothing in the tech world. Also, who starts a business without the intention of making $ ?

As long as they don't intrude too much or are annoying, I don't mind all that much. Am I missing something?
Yes, you are missing a lot. :) The internet has changed the world. It is a wonderful thing, I love it, but it really can't be controlled. It has enormous capacity to do evil, for want of a better term. :)
In this case they have absolutely no chance of fulfilling their manifesto even slightly. It is not a matter of being prepared to pay for things, here it is YOU that is being sold. I would be quite happy to pay for this if it's manifesto was doable, but they have already sold out. They can't give you what they offer. Inventors , programmers etc we know are aiming for commercial benefits so venture capital works well there.
If you look closely at any of the so called social media benefits they aren't really. Major example is the Arab Spring, we couldn't actually say that turned out well could we ??? Social media has become a great recruiting ground for ISIS for example. People say oh ,it's great for sharing pics etc of the family. Well you have to be very careful of the picks you share of your kids because the child pornographers are thriving. Spell check doesn't work on pornographers  Denial at all :)
So much more that could be said about this. All the information is out there all you have to do what feather did and look for it. Look well before you leap.
Re: ello
^^ thanks for the thoughtful response Didi :D... you sound a lot like my husband in these matters.
The things you brought up aren't really on my radar as I make a concentrated effort to keep my life as positive-in-thought as possible (have had to out of necessity) but very valid points. Just about anything can be used for good & bad; horrible it's aiding terrorists. I saw an article the other day that reported little girls named "Isis" are now being bullied in schools, how stupid is that? sheesh
Many of my pics I'll post & only leave up for 1 day or so, then off they go to 'my friends only' because it does freak me out a bit to have them out for public view, just doesn't feel right.
So true, there really is no controlling it. These manifestos are just another marketing ploy.
Re: ello
I suppose because they've 'sold out,' there's really no guarantee whether they will adhere to their manifesto. I don't have much of a problem with data mining in exchange for free service like Gmail or Google search, but there's no stopping Ello if they start running ads like Facebook because they have to answer to investors.

Re: ello
ELLO, PBC A Better Way October 20, 2014 Ello is a simple, beautiful, and ad-free social network. There has been some speculation in the press since our launch eleven weeks ago that Ello will someday be forced to allow paid advertising on its network. We understand some of this cynicism: with the Internet turning into one giant billboard, and with virtually all social networks relying on advertising to support themselves, it can be hard to imagine that there can be a better way. But 2014 is not 2004, and the world has changed. Ello’s explosive growth over the last few months proves that there is a hunger to connect with friends and see beautiful things — without being manipulated by ad salesmen, boosted posts, and computer algorithms that don’t always have our best interests at heart. On an ad-driven social network, the advertiser is the customer and you’re the product that’s bought and sold. To assure in the strongest possible way that Ello stays focused on its mission to be a different kind of social network, Ello has converted to a State of Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). A PBC is a special for-profit company in the USA that operates to produce a benefit for society as a whole. As a PBC, Ello is legally obligated to take its impact on society into account in every decision it makes. Ello’s PBC’s charter states that Ello shall not for pecuniary gain:

Re: ello
Interesting, but why do we need social media anyway. ?? And they still haven't covered how they are going to make a profit. Sausage sizzle anyone ??
They really do need to be more specific.
Re: ello

We need social media because we're in the digital age where no one actually talks in person to each other much. :D
Ello seems pretty cool to me. jmo

Can't read a single one of them, but signatures are like unique pieces of art, cool in a collection.
Re: ello
Social media is useful to keep in touch with friends overseas.
What bugs me is that the internet has always been social. Most of us have lived on the internet long enough to remember bulletin boards and forums like this place. These are all social. Difference being usually forums are created around a theme while social media as we call facebook has become very facetious and narcissistic. But as with forums you get what you put into social media.
Re: ello
^^ So true Feather.
I rather dislike FB for those very reasons. The newness of Ello is prob appealing, maybe no one I really know is on it, yet.

We need social media ??? You have got be kidding ??? or desperate  Social media is one of the reasons people don't talk to each other anymore. And let's face it what people actually present on social media is measured by how others are going to see it so it is rarely truthful.
Being "cool" is not a valid judgement criteria to me. They have investors !! Those investors will want returns . I want to know how they will get them. :)
Just to be clear I love the internet. It's fabulous , but it has come with a huge price that many are either unaware of or choose to ignore.
Re: ello
^^ agreed!! valid points
haven't ignored the price, have compromised like most. by "cool" wasn't judging it, just saying I, myself, feel ok with the terms. You don't, that's your prerogative, don't join. :D I haven't, but would consider joining.
For me, thus far, the price has not outweighed the gain (based on my limited perception at this time).
Re: ello
^^Why would you want to compromise ?? This is what I really don't get. There are many ares where we do have to compromise . This isn't one. I use the internet to do what I want.
Do you know all the terms?? I would want more answers to pretty valid questions. Although this is all hypothetical really I just don't feel a need to join any social media. I have a pretty full life without it which amazing people I have met through the internet. Music however has had an incredible influence.:)

For me the forums, bulletin boards were good , people looking for other people and getting together to talk about shared interests. That's good social :) But Facebook gets a whole lot more, and the world influence of such a narcissistic organisation is frightening. Arab Spring ?? Like that turned out well.
When you think about it Facebook was created by teenagers, for teenagers and the main influence now is teenagers desperate for "likes" There was an excellent 4 corners on this a few months back that showed how this was capitalised on !! Was an great explanation for all that crappy EDM that is out there now
Found a link you can watch on that program. I nearly didn't watch it because I thought "Oh yeah, more on teenagers" But the way Facebook is being monetarised is fascinating. :)

Re: ello
^^ have the feeling we're not on the same page, mostly because we don't really know each other so I can't answer adequately. They can have my name, they can market to me, I really couldn't care less. No one controls me. ;)
Like you & everyone, I use the internet for what I want. Life should be good, really good, since no one gets out of it alive. I refuse to be fearful. Careful yes -- fearful, angry, blaming, defending, paranoid, no. (not saying you are those, just my own philosophy.)
All the teens I know have long gone off FB in preference of Twitter & Tumbler. FB here is nowadays for older generations, I think. idk... just what I've observed not yet having watched the PBS show about it. Maybe younger teens are flooding FB these days? It's very not-in-vogue for those I know.
idk, idk... ok? I'm sure someone else has better input.

I don't think our different opinions have anything to do with not knowing each other. :) Saying no one controls you is saying you are unaware of the controls , because we are all controlled to some degree. Even those of us who try to look deeper.
Fear is a natural protective emotion. In fact all, except maybe blaming, all you mention there should be part of a healthy human being in the right percentages . Anger at the the right time is very important , defending even more so. Not rapt in blaming, but there again part of human nature. We will all do it at some time or other. Paranoid ?? What's that saying?? Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you"
The thing about anecdotal evidence is that it is not really evidence. :)Your teenage friends are going against the known statistics on Facebook. They say it is the at the older and more savvy who are more likely to leave.
Maybe get back to us when you have watched the PBS show. It really is very interesting.
BTW They are not just marketing to you , they are marketing YOU. You are the product.
Just to reinforce that BTW, from the ello thing feather posted.
On an ad-driven social network, the advertiser is the customer and you’re the product that’s bought and sold.
Ello are using it as part of their marketing spiel
Re: ello
You're splitting hairs & while agreeing with your points, choosing to place my energies elsewhere.
Like I said before, have not joined ello and am not really into FB much at all though I do check in daily there. My kids go to a school with 5,000 other kids (no joke, 1 school) and they tell me their perception is that "no one uses FB anymore" in their realm, so I just threw that out to you; take it or leave it.
If someone I really want to connect more with invited me to join ello, I would join rather than miss that opportunity due to fear (or fact) of being a product sold by the company. People & relationships are always more important to me than social media status, marketing companies, profiteers, etc. Sorry if that offends your views against such companies. Just thinking there are instances when I would join if the benefit to my life is greater than the risk of someone making a profit off of me.
Anger is incredibly valuable when pointed in purposeful directions, I agree, and all survival skills have their place; not for me to judge. Today, I choose not to be angry at anyone or anything since this moment is all I'm guaranteed. When I decide to get angry & want to do something useful with my anger, I absolutely will & do, and know you will as well. :D
besides, who wants ello when we have ms? :p

I put up links  I'm quite perturbed that you see it that way. But choosing where you place your energies is something I endorse heartily . Even preach it at times :)
I find it frustrating that you don't find something wrong if you have to follow someone onto a social media platform to connect???
The facts I have given about these companies is very far from just my view so definitely no offence taken. :)
But whatever, go for it.

Did I say "have to follow?" It's not what I would want, per se. Sometimes that might be a person's only option, to meet them where they are; not ideal choice, but it's a way. Can't define it as wrong or right though.
Have every confidence what you posted is verifiable; I know that much about you, for sure. :D thanks!! will check it out

Instagram and vine is what the kidlets use these days... or else the label that paid these 5 kids collectively $50,000 for posting videos on their instagram and vine of this music video I worked on recently would have been for nothing. but none of them used fb. Even the music group from the video only had 3,000 followers on FB, but tours the world and has a tone of teenage fans.
Re: ello
Anything the word social attached on the cover entails a marketing dream. Nothing more, nothing less. For those who feel a necessity for 'social networking,' really do need to face reality.

Some fabulous music totally wrecked by awful vocals and electronic effects. Also so badly mastered it causes my amp to soft clip.

I like the quote....for those who insist someone face reality
Re: ello
^^^But is that what it is saying ??? I am speaking as someone who has made at least one big dream come true. I can do both dreams and reality  And without confrontations :) As most of us can and do , which is why I think that quote means fuck all !! Condescending BS
Re: ello
^^As an album cover though, I interpreted it to mean "F---k reality, let's explore dreams through music!" which I like. :D As a quote, it's rather off-putting. Confronting one's dreams, hmmmm? worth pondering in a world always cramming reality down our throats, while really, anything is possible! "not strong enough" to me meant "not brave enough to pursue dreams." just my interpretation.
