So I showed a video about Argentina to my students today since they're studying South America. What a beautiful place. Forgive my ignorance for being unaware that Buenos Aires is home to the world's widest avenue: Avenida 9 de Julio. The video mentioned that it's about 20 lanes wide. Here are some pics:

man that's so crazy....were u students interested?

Re: Avenida 9 de Julio

That's right. And it's pretty wild to cross if you're walking... you have to pause in the middle, with cars rushing by on both sides, and there's not much buffer for slower people. You can imagine what cab drivers start to say when there's some 80 year old granny struggling to get to the other side...
man that's so crazy....were u students interested?
Yeah, until the movie went on to talk about 'Gauchos' and showed them slaughtering a cow out on the estancia. What they showed wasn't just a quick cut-to of a cow laying dead; it was a full-on, hit the cow on the head to kill it and then proceed to show the entire process. Two words: Dis Gusting. Mind you these are 6th graders and several had to run to the bathroom to get sick.

I'm officially moving to Argentina. Not sure that I can deal with the 'can't keep appointments' aspect though.

Re: Avenida 9 de Julio

Argentina rules.

I?ve never been there, but it?s in my top 3 favourite countries in the world, along with Portugal and England.

Beautiful women, great soccer players, great DJ?s, great food...the few argentinians I?ve ever met were great people.

And an Argentinian soccer player (Beto Acosta) gave me one of my biggests joys in life, by scoring 22 goals in the year that my club became Portuguese champion after 19 years of suffering...

what do you mean?

#418950Post 22 of 34

Re: Avenida 9 de Julio
what do you mean?
They talked in the video about how Argentinians wear watches, but nobody seems to care about time. It said that none keep appointments, etc and think nothing of it.

Re: Avenida 9 de Julio

^ Never heard that one before...

It's like anywhere else in the world... if there's money involved, everybody will be in time in every appointment. Maybe if you were to catch a train, or a bus... you can expect some delay. The british started our train service, but they never managed to keep the famous british train timing around here I guess...

Re: Avenida 9 de Julio

Lookin at how they've done in the UK itself of late, that doesn't surprise me, lol. Almost just as bad as the Dutch trains. Almost.

Re: Avenida 9 de Julio

What weirded me out in Buenos Aires is the anti-government graffiti on national monuments. Other than that (and terrible potholey sidewalks with dogshit strewn about everywhere), an awesome place to visit. 8)

well, considering you would bring US dollars, it won't be so expensive... unless you're thinking to stay on the Sheraton :P

an example:

a meal in a very good restaurant, with fine argentinean wines (they are very good) could cost you less than u$s20.

you can get decent hotels from u$s15/night

if you go clubbing, a ticket is usually below u$s10, and drinks are 5 bucks tops :)

buenos aires is expensive if you chose to follow the tourist trail :P if you have chance to move on your own, you'll get to know much more than if you're coming on a tour, and the costs are much lower.
Skahound, your a teacher??? Didn't know that.
I only play one on t.v.

Actually I substitute at the school where my fiance teaches. It's a lot of fun most days.

Re: Avenida 9 de Julio

^^arielus, thanks for the tips. I figured it would be better for me financially to go to Argentina rather than Europe this summer. Plus, I've never been to Argentina. I hope my plans go through.

^skahound, nice to see people helping our youth. :Bingo:

Re: Avenida 9 de Julio

only problem with argentina is that the flight is quite expensive, at least twice as flying from the us to europe

but all the other stuff is going to be quite cheap there
