Re: Robin Williams RIP :(
battling addiction & depression for years...
This, I think, is the crux... "battling" anything really difficult "for years" is exceptionally taxing and takes a huge toll on a soul. The "battle" within indicates tremendous effort, resistance + acceptance + resistance, on & on, facing it everyday, battling it everyday. None of us knows truly what his inner struggles were or what/who they involved. It's time to stop making people feel ashamed of depression as if it means self-centered-ness, it doesn't.

He helped so many other people too with all of his philanthropy/humanitarianism & knew he brought joy & laughter to others very naturally, and that didn't relieve him enough to keep living?

Keep doing anything and everything that soothes your soul!! (No matter what anyone else thinks about it or how you're criticized for it. Your soul, your life is worth it.)

I despise permanent decisions based on temporary problems. If you can see everything as temporary (this WILL pass), it helps.

Re: Robin Williams RIP :(

personally, I don't believe there exists any evil force who has any power over me or how I feel, ever. (not that my beliefs apply to this thread.) I think if we rob, cheat, or steal anything from ourselves, including happiness, we do that onto ourselves. I believe only love has power.

Re: Robin Williams RIP :(
it took me a while to open this thread....the death of a Robin Williams has brought up a lot of pain, mainly to do with the death of Jibs and also personal struggles in my past.

Depression is a horrible disease that needs to be addressed more seriously....the number of people out there struggling with it on a daily basis is astounding....chances are someone you care about is suffering in silence. There is such a stigma about people who are depressed.....it is ok to reach out & ask for help....having been there, I know it is hard to take that step....we as a society need to change things so it's not so scary to ask for help when you need it.

People comment about how could someone with his fame & $ do something so selfish.....he never chose to feel the pain & despair he was feeling....depression doesn't care if you are rich, poor, pretty, ugly, single, married, etc.....please if you are suffering in silence, reach out to anyone....even me if you must....I will never judge & will lend an ear or shoulder whenever.

Re: Robin Williams RIP :(

Well said Karen, and on a point of how we see depression as a selfish misapprehension: Robin Williams's death: a reminder that suicide and depression are not selfish | Dean Burnett | Science | theguardian.com

And it took a while for me to repeat to this thread as well, all I can say is I didn't really have a serious affection for Williams, seen a few of his stand ups, and obviously the vivid films. from early years, but his loss is a constant reminder of the viscosity of our minds, and the uncontrollable discomfort it leads. I always refer to this paining to somehow try to explain our own inner demons, the black dog.

thx mate

I know its considered extremely cliche on MS to discuss God, but I have found he helps a lot with the demons. If for no other reason than God has connected me with other humans on a spiritual level that I would haven't had otherwise. But as we like to say in modern times, to each their own.... i guess.

His widow released a statement today that he was also battling early stages of Parkinson's disease, in case someone here hadn't heard:

I feel so badly for her, so young to lose her father (& to suicide makes things worse, I think). I can't even fathom how any hurt soul could lash out at her with horrendous photos in her time of loss & grief. Social media can really be inhuman at times like these. I'm glad she quit her FB and Twitter and I hope she gains some peace in keeping her circle rather tight with those she can trust.

Re: Robin Williams RIP :(
Depression isn't an illness unless someone famous suffers or dies from it.
I think most people are confused by the symptoms of the illness, believing it's only temporary sadness, general melancholy personality, or something easily remedied by concentrating on others instead of oneself. None of those are actual symptoms. And it is a deadly illness more than most people realize.

It's time we discuss the symptoms of depression more seriously and the steps to take if you see or know someone exhibiting symptoms. Typically, they ask for help in various ways that go unnoticed.

It's important we notice each other more.

I was hospitalized for a few days because of severe depression (due to circumstances & medication I was taking) and it was one of the most positive/life-altering experiences of my entire life. If one single person wants to know what that's like, in case you need help or someone you know might need help, just let me know and I'll write more about that.

My husband & doctor made the decision, not me, because I wasn't capable at that time of making a rational decision for my well being --my mind was in that yes/no, yes/no, yes/no dilemma. "Yes, I need help. No, I can get by. Yes, something is wrong. No, it's all in my mind. Yes, I'm troubled. No trouble, I'm successful in so many ways. Yes, I'm fine. No, most of the time I'm not fine. Yes, I'm strong. No, I'm not weak, only weak people are depressed (lie). Yes, I care. No, I don't care." on & on & on.... stuck in an endless thought loop, meanwhile drained of all energy & motivation for anything.

There are ways out & feeling much, much better.

And people with very strong faiths commit suicide too, they get stuck in loops also. There is a way out.

And yet you are blaming the people around him in the other thread. I don't think she would have been happy reading what you said either. You do realise that anyone can read these and you might be surprised who does.

And as Robin very painfully showed the only way out isn't always the nice one.

Maybe it is time we let he and his family and friends really rest in peace.

From many sources I'd heard the story of the troops turning around on him, but hadn't seen it or his reaction. thanks! That was a very nice tribute. He had such a good heart toward others.

I was a little bit sickly, stayed in bed last Sunday, so indulged myself & watched Mrs Doubtfire 4 times, cried (& laughed) all through the 1st time, it's soooo good and showcases his talent so well, much of which I'd forgotten. Then watched Jack a couple of times. I didn't realize how much his work meant to me until after he left our world, probably not alone in that sentiment. Such a great reminder how brief everything really is, even when it seems not so, most of the time. :D Live & learn.

Re: Robin Williams RIP :(

Organized/corporate Christians/religions use the concept of brokenness to make appealing the practice of going to church to anyone whose hurting or ever been hurt, which everyone has, thus, they believe they are appealing to literally everyone. It's a marketing ploy, that's all. Just as labeling anyone as "broken" is an attempt at reducing them or their significance, applying pity upon them, trying to illicit compassion for them, etc., the intention is manipulation.

I intended this thread to be about honoring the life/work of Robin Williams and processing the loss. Seems the billboard image is better suited for the religious thread.

Fact is we are all whole AND we are all broken at times, yet we are always whole. So?
