Sometimes, the pictures just help to lighten up the mood.

People have problem with random pics or gifs in derailed threads because the offended people have difficulty posting a reply to said pictures or gifs without resorting to using a similar pictorial response. But if they used a pictorial response they then feel like they've succumbed to what they perceive as the 'lower level' of the person who started the picture response.

Usually these are people who take themselves or their posts or the forum a bit too seriously, too keen to pursue a perceived slight or argument.
