After a 4 year break Global Underground returns with the 40th edition of the legendary ‘City’ series. [...]

For this special edition of the ‘City’ series Global Underground fittingly hosted the release party in the highly regarded club Ego in Solomun’s home city of Hamburg where he played for more than 6 hours. Solomun himself ran the club for 7 years before he came into dance music notoriety by winning Mixmag’s ‘DJ of the Year’ in 2012 as well as ‘Best Producer’ at the DJ Awards Ibiza. He has also further cemented his place in the top ranks of the dance music world with his successful label Diynamic and his club nights at Sankeys, Ibiza.
I will be straight out to buy this LOL

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

I saw they posted a few weeks back that they had done the GU Party. Yet another poor move.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Jooris Voorn would have been a more suitible candidate.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Solomun is without a doubt one of the best house music producers in the last couple of years (5 or so) but i don't like him as a DJ too much.. let's see what he is up to with this release..

is this for real? comes quite unexpected, no?

#1721166Post 9 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

why so many old tracks in there... weird. with the access he could have to new unreleased material.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

I liked that Saturday I'm in Love comp he did a few years back, but most of his DJ stuff lately has been pretty cheesy.

Who put up the cash to bring GU back?

#1721197Post 11 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

After have hearing the Felix "the cat" comp. I can listen to any compilation.

GU, really?

Sasha, moves on.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Regardless of GU being a shadow of its former self, i'll still always give every mix a few listens. Hoping for the goods

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Yeah, I've still got affection for the series - being at the parties for my hometown earned a lot of loyalty from me, even if the mix CD was bordering on awful.
Yeah, I've still got affection for the series
^This.

Isn't the retail mix CD dead, though?

#1721537Post 16 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

I don't think the MIX cd is dead. Labels like Fabric and Balance...and more recently Digweed Live In....they're still going strong. Frankly I think that GU is better than all of them, despite some bad releases like the 3rd James Lavelle (not that it's actually bad..just not unique at all....and sucking Dubfire's dick), Sharam and Felix. And frankly the Dubfire GU was pretty crappy too.

Someone on this thread really touched on something important....with the access to unreleased music these guys have, they really out to do better track selections. Global UNDERGROUND. Not fucking Global Rebroadcast.

#1721552Post 17 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

I think it is dead, unless it's an alternative dj (Dixon, Lawrence, Robag) and the tracks are either unreleased or obscure.

#1721574Post 18 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

^^ Balance is alive and well. And some of the record labels seem to be putting out at least some Cds

#1721577Post 19 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Balance's reputation is what keeps the thing going. We can name a few exceptions but that doesn't mean the medium isn't obsolete.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Why is my post edited you fascists?!?! ;)

#1721853Post 21 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

GU did have a fair number of misfires in the tail end of their releases, partly because the "scene" had moved on and changed and the massive Trance/Progressive House tidal wave had died down, leaving a pretty big vacuum.

They tried to adapt and branch out with releasing mixes by Felix the Housecat, Carl Cox (sorry, I love the guy, but that cd sucked) and others. The better cd's like Sultan's Nubreed didn't offset how disconnected GU felt with the changes going on in dance music at the time.

I was particularly disappointed with the Plump DJ's mix, which was a total disaster. How the fuck do you screw up a breaks cd by two masters of the genre?

#1721882Post 22 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

^I think you may have answered that final question, in the first paragraph of your response.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

does anyone know if they are planning to release a special edition CD set?? I think this mix will certainly deserve one.

Is anyone going to actually buy it?

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

So many bad decisions, the should have got Zabiela to do one around 02/03 probably Fancuilli to. Voorn would have been a good contender in recent years. Instead they got DJ's no one carred about.

I kind of thought that Zabiela and Voorn would have been more suited for the Nubreed series - especially Zabiela since he's always been doing his own thing.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Well, I didn't expect too much about this, but is a good comp. very surprised about it, and the most important, sounds much much much serious than the last experiments of GU.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Disc one has great tracks on it BUT the mixing is so uninspired in places (just quick blends, tracks not fitting together...) it's disappointing. Could have been a great mix if he had put some more effort into the mixing imo. Have not listened to disc 2 yet.

#1729381Post 30 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

^^^^

Agree, some good tracks on it but some mixes between the tracks sounds awful, seems made it by a rookie.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Decent tunes, really like the Broken Bells remix that's thrown on there. Not one of their best, but a welcome return to form.

#1730124Post 32 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

Ok so people are saying this has some decent tunes on..... but more importantly I need to know before buying, are the sleeve notes written by Dom Phillips and his 'random adjective generator' ?!?!?!?

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

I'll never forget listening to Sasha "Ibiza" for the first time - a definite GU highlight for me (and San Francisco too ;) )

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

completely missed this!

is it worth getting back on the GU bandwagon though?

Just finished listening to CD 1 and I agree with this. While some of the tracks are really nice the mixing at parts is sub-par specially in the age of computer mixing. I could look past this since I was enjoying the mix but the last 15-20 minutes are just a pile of cheese put on top of each other except for the last track "The Wheel" by SOHN which I really like.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 would have been 3.5 if it wasn't for those last 20 min

#1730353Post 38 of 41

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

CD 2 is like we're used to from other GU instances much more dance floor orientated. The mixing on it is actually good and I enjoyed the mix from start to finish. Will give CD 1 a couple of more listens before I write it completely off.

All in all I give this release a 3/5 solid but nothing spectacular.
