BEATZ - Divergences & Contradictions of Electronic Music SUBT EN

Eduardo De La Calle (72 min) Filmed with practically no budget, minimal technical resources but a fervent desire to document an important piece of music history, "Beatz" is the result of three years of effort and the absolute dedication of Eduardo De La Calle, with help of Vincent Livolsi, Daniel Arasanz and Iban Ugalde. The film is shot in various cities including Berlin, Tokyo, Barcelona, New York, Amsterdam and Paris and functions as rapid subjective summary of today’s dance music scene, from its origins to the professionalization of the genre and the paradigm shift that has come with the digital age. Pedro Pantaleon and Eduardo De La Calle ran the musical selection and the script was written by Daniel Arasanz. . . . some good in there

Re: A documentary to watch!!! BEATZ

The name "Beatz" was actually the first electronic music cd I ever owned, same name "Beatz." All I remember is it had the sample on it "my son Robert Kirk, died of a drug overdose" on it... if anyone knows what cd this is and if I can buy it, I would be really thankful. I know the overdose thing is weird to have associated with this music, but it's just the only part I can remember.

Re: A documentary to watch!!! BEATZ

I downloaded so I could watch at my leisure. And I really enjoyed it. !! :D One of the things that leapt out at me was about people just downloading anything free they could find. Quantity rather that quality. Having to pay before the digital age brought people a lot closer to their music and the days when a friend or a guy in a record shop recommended to you because they really, really knew what music you would like was so much better and richer than the current spotify /itunes model. I still get/buy my music based on that old formula. It just works a little differently now. :) I have some great friends :D

Thanks for the video Trick. !! :D

Re: A documentary to watch!!! BEATZ

Thank you Treehills mate, that is for sure the track I am referring to. The cd was a gift given to me in 1995 roughly I would say. It probably contained mostly "breakbeats" which is probably why the compilation was titled "BEATZ." The cover was like an orange/pinkish color and "BEATZ" was written in a graffiti font - if memory serves me correctly.

But if we don't find the cd, that track sure brings back memories :)

Re: A documentary to watch!!! BEATZ

I enjoy solving a mystery. Is this it? Mr Kirk's Nightmare is track 11...doesn't have "Beatz" but rather "Beats," has pink, looks kind of graffiti-ish, was released in '91 and has random samples. "Beatz" back then was a label (black & white one with just that word), but they didn't release that song, only 4Hero did, until I found this:

Here's the link if this is it. I had some trouble connecting to it, got it on the 3rd try though.

Re: A documentary to watch!!! BEATZ

I love that you are trying to help find this  :) - If memory serves me, it was a solid pinkish colored cd with just the word "BEATZ" on the top half of the cd. That was it.

Re: A documentary to watch!!! BEATZ

This is indeed very good! Thanks for sharing!

The analog vs. digital aspect interests me the most since I hold a very extreme point of view on this... I think that eventually musical instruments will be completely replaced by digital sound simply because of the rapid development of the digital realm (computing power, software, etc.) in general..

The other thing they touched on was the length of the "modern" DJ sets these days. Yes, a lot of it has to do with the fact that they only have ~90min slots at the ever so popular EDM festivals, but I am noticing a trend overall.. I just don't think that the younger/upcoming DJs have the foundation or the experience to string a 5-6hrs set for a proper party. I dunno... maybe its just me, but I am afraid that we will loose that kind of journey like DJ set that you get from the.. let's just call them the "sasha generation" but you know which DJs I mean.

But yeah, the documentary is very well done..

Being a very early adopter of electronic music I would possibly have agreed with that until I walked into a music rehearsal at Trinity College in Cambridge a couple of months ago. It was one of the most spine tingling moments of my life , there were three of us all with very different in music and we were all just blown away !! The sounds you can pull from a musical instrument that is mellowed by hundreds of years is going to be very hard to replicate. I would like to think we will have the very best of both worlds. :) I said to the others, "this is why I hate MP3 !!"

So , so agree with you on the short sets thing !! The good Djs that are coming through aren't getting the opportunities to learn long set. They can't realise their full potential. It's so sad.

Re: A documentary to watch!!! BEATZ

^ I know.. I don't think we are nowhere near replicating most natural instrument sounds, but maybe in 40-60 years time we will have the tools to do so. In the meantime, yes..the best blend of both would be ideal.. in fact even if we do manage to replicate everything accurately, we could still enjoy the two type of sounds blended together! But it would be so much easier to do if these sounds become as accessible as digital is today.. : )

As far as the extended set art.. I really hope we don't loose it altogether post

Re: A documentary to watch!!! BEATZ

^^ Not really , I don't think we were even supposed to be there. We walked into the back of the chapel and just froze . Just this incredible crystal clear beautiful music !! Part of it was the Nutcracker Suite. I did know the other bits we heard , but as usual I forget names .
