This a question I consider from time to time... Especially when I reflect on how long it's been since I first joined. Will respond later today after giving this question further consideration..:You thin:

What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
Why do you have to wait, if you have given it some consideration in the past?
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
I've lived a fairly portable/virtual life with a lot of changes and relocations. Singapore, Australia, China, US: Sadly or thankfully MS has basically been one of the constants in my life, it's my virtual local pub/club. Even when I go traveling I still get on MS
I think we've had threads like this in the past and a lot of us have MS as one of the default open tabs in the browser. I have MS, my Gmail, Facebook, and my torrent site as the default
It's just one of those places I keep coming back to even if I get tired of the negativity and bickering (which I've also learnt my lesson and to distance myself from, too much stress in real life to put up with virtual animosity too).
I think we don't realize it now because MS is always there, but like all the internet greats, this place is one of the cornerstones of my internet at least. It's always a pleasure and special to meet a fellow MSer.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
this place is one of the cornerstones of my internet
pretty much summed up what MS is for me.
it has always been about the music and it continues to be and i mostly frequent the 'Promos and Recommendations' for that reason. if i find a mix that blows me away, i usually post it in the 'What are you listening to' thread and it always brings me joy when fellow MS'rs like my posts. it's the small things i guess :)
i have yet to meet anyone on this board... lack of travel and being in Oregon, USA kind of explains that. i had plans to meet up with the legendary Jibgolly (RIP) at WMC but... that never really materialized obviously.
Why do you have to wait, if you have given it some consideration in the past?
a) because I want to further consider it first.
b) because this is not my 9th grade English class . or is it?
Mercury Server as Feather put it, is like my online pub as well. Glad I waited to post because I really like the way Feather puts thoughts to keyboard). I also appreciate that Mercury Server is not Facebook, or Gmail, or one of the other websites I frequent that is constantly changing. MS is a true artistic outlet, as its based around music, one of the greatest if not the most powerful art form on the planet. MS gives me a place to really reflect upon where Ive been, who I've been, and where I'm going. Not necessarily in profound ways, but perhaps. I can see what kind of music I was listening to 2 years ago and how I was communicating here and what I'm listening to now, and such. MS gives me a place to read the writings of people from all over the world (when it's in English or some form thereof). That broadens my perspective on life and how interconnected we are which I believe has increased my understanding of different cultures to some extent and perhaps helped me be more empathic. At the end of the day, I really value this place as well. It's a constant. A constant source of music.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
Pleased to say I've met feather twice ... Bedrock O2 Academy and Bedrock ADE :)

well how long do you need?
Maybe be you should have posted the first post after your 20th consideration.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
 maybe!
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
For me personally, I do not think it means anything, or maybe I have just failed to comprehend the definition of ‘mean.’ However, I am very grateful for the myriad of members contributing to this overall forum from P&R to movie recommendations, and everything in between. People give up their time and efforts to ensure this place delivers on its intention to be the best dance music forum on the internet, and I can conclude that so far, personally it has been.
In comparison to other forums and even in the facebook world, I have not come across a better run, and accessible categorised sections anywhere. In turn a commutative effort by the mods and the likes has made this the reason why. For others I understand that this place does have a strong connection, especially with Jib’s and the meet ups, possibly as I am new-ish member this could be the reason why I can say it does not 'mean' anything.
Overall, I just hope that [ms] sustains through the thick of times, and as always it is great to see members signing in and providing a say, albeit as we get older, and other spheres of life minimises our time to sign-in, we can only hope to find new members that can look further than just the P&R.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
Unrequited love.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
Firstly its my daily fix of everything that is music and the net and secondly its having to look up the word "unrequited"
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?

I think you're right Illuminate, meeting members does make a big difference. I've met 5 or so over the years and talked with Kamal, and it's great to put a face with posts you've been reading for a while. What I found is how some members seem in person very much like they do in their posts, while others not at all .
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
Living a nomadic existence as I do, I met a few of my best friends here. First thing I do when i move to a new place is see if anyone from MS lives nearby.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
I stop on MS every day, two or three times a day. It´s the best site for good music and recommendations... and the nonsense thread, of course :D:D:D I´d like to meet some of the MS guys/girls, but I´m far from everywhere hehe Anyways, thank you
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
I've been buzzing around this site for 10 years now and think of it as essential when it comes to discovering new music. While I never actually met any of the gang, it certainly feels like I did ;) Some quality people around these parts.
Alas, after 3 great kids, a full time job and some study along the way, I don't frequent here as much as I used to. Having said that I make a concerted effort to keep the ambient thread alive.
I always get excited when a new Luke Fair/Ricky Ryan/Hisham Zahran set comes along
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
not sure what i'd do without MS at work and i'm not sure where i'd get most of my sets from if this place ceased to exist. i've been around since just about the beginning and i've seen tons of people come and go, met a half dozen or so folks and some i still keep in touch with to this day. i remember when the board was a lot more active, but regardless, i'm here pretty much every day whether i post or not. if i didn't have this place, i'd have probably gone off the deep end by now.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
When I first stumbled upon MS, for me it was a bit like winning the lottery because of its enriching quality, almost daily. As far as human interaction or personal growth, it's not like a pub for me, although I can see how that would apply. I imagine it's either a significant substitute for in-person interaction (a supportive crutch) for some or a supplement for others, both have value. Either way, (even at it's worse) for growth I think it's for those who prefer growing in a very gentle, quiet, slow-stepping way, which I can see the value of, most definitely. For those who have met people and formed relationships with them from here, that's amazing, and I imagine pretty rare. Thus far, it has enriched my life and for that I am very grateful. It's like a worldwide open portal you can tap into at your leisure, although a bit too "men's club" at times. haha
Sometimes for me it's difficult to see the value of online interaction because you can't see the look in someone's face or the tone of their voice, you can't glean a glance that says so much, or a touch that communicates something words can't, and yet, there is something intangibly significant & freeing in anonymous expression & questioning, especially when it includes music. It's that freedom & freedom (usually) of judgement I just find very enjoyable, almost addictive.
The music aspect [of ms], well.... meaningful words escape me for description on that aspect, it's immense.
ok-well, that was deep enough  lol, geeeeeez guuurl :D
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
I found [ms] being mentioned for Digweed Kiss100 discussion, it was like unearthing an Aladdins Cave and I've never looked back. I remember the pre P&R days when hidden mixes used to appear after you had sufficient posts to access ... it was like waking up on xmas morning and waiting to see what Santa left.
12 Years and countless posts later, it's great to have participated more over the year - I've made some life long friends through the site and its great to keep on bumping into others.
The internal bickering aside (which has always been there from Chem to Beanz) it's a relative sea of tranquility.
I guess we have all changed and many have moved on with our busy lives, family commitments etc. and facebook has taken over the more immediate social networking side of things ... but this place is still unmatched for music and a unique little place on the web.

that part might take years to develop, not months . a lot of us have gotten rather used to each others quirks, hangups, nonsense, strengths, etc. so it's sort of like an online pub, as we also enjoy beer .

I've been known to talk nonsense after one too many scotch

Ha!! I see now.... ok.. I can't really see myself here for years. Don't know why. Seems more like a wonderful stopover to me on my way somewhere else.

Idk about that... I, for one, dislike Facebook more & more lately... preferring more "unique little places on the web."
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
It's a site to access decent electronic music with the option to engage in conversation in the forums on various topics.

I did a whole thread recently about what MS used to mean and what it does mean to me, but it got deleted  Says it all really

I still check out weekly all the music blogs you recommended me 4 years ago.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
MercuryServer, I didn't even come up with the name, the name, the domain, and the orange ball logo was the creation (and subsequent gift) from one of my best college mates. We used to jam out to Astral Projection, Quake 2 and 3 and an endless flow of Tanqueray.
There's so many different inputs that contributed to its birth, having just moved to Massachussettes, me being invited to NY for S&D at Twilo (Aug 28, 2000), how life altering it was, several months later, discovering that Diggerz had a radio show, googling Kiss 100, running into Ahmed's Audiogalaxy group until AG was given the boot. I told Ahmed I'd be happy to find a place to host the mixes but he should supply the mixes, getting on the hunt for webhosting, and Algy came to the rescue, we formed a meaningless page with a link to the downloads, until webhosting, forums, technology, domain name, site logo + identity, all of it fell together and the site was born May 2nd, 2002. The rest as they say, is history.
I miss the twilo days, the friends that were on here (original crew i.e. Ahmed, Sheppie, Kelly, Beaner, Stevo, chemicalbeavis) and now those who barely make it anymore (Tomtom, shpira, 88Mariner, skahound, asdf_admin, MJ, digger, gatz, and so many other names on this list) although Tom and MJ I still speak to on a regular basis and even had the opportunity to meet Mike last weekend, for the first time in 10 years since the site went live and the site and webhosting would not be alive without his help and support.
It's no surprise MS is aging, I just hope she passes on smoothly when the time comes.

Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
Music was my first love but what has became more apparent over the years is that without MS I would not have met the great people I have. It gave me the chance to fly over to Miami for the winter music conference and stay with people who made me one of their own. I can honestly say, hand on heart, there are people on this board that would be a part of my everyday life if they lived closer to me. Bless him, Steve still is.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
When I first stumbled on MS it was a place for music & a bit of banter.....then it became much more than that....I have met some wonderful people on here that I know I will stay in touch with for a long time in one way or another (you know who you are). However when dear Jibs & Jeff passed away, it took a piece of this place that never came back (for me anyways). There was a while where I dreaded coming on here because of certain members due to being attacked....then they left & it started to get back on track again....but then my life got busy (marriage, birth of my son, and soon to welcome another bundle of Joy any day now). I pop on now & then, but not as often as I would like. MS will always be special to me, especially back in "in the good ol' days"
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
I do not get that "feel good" vibe unfortunately.
Must be the way I interact... There's a lot of my "pedant is better than yours" from what I have seen.
I never came here to make friends though, nor enemies I should add.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
like I said. its probably me.
Nice to see what it means to others.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?

Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
Forgot to mention, I really like/appreciate how ms is easy on the eyes. Love the new banners too! :D
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
wow! looking back, it's kinda hard to put into words what [MS] has meant to me! i trolled for a long time before i had the guts to say something. it's funny now, how apprehensive i was to post on an internet forum, but i used to be pretty shy in person and i guess it carried over to the internet! for me it started as a new place to d/l music. but it started opening up for me when i realized that some of the people here ( Jibs mainly) were the same people i used to get music from on napster. it took a turn when hungry girl ( most of you know him as clintlove ) and i decided to crash the meet up in p-cola! to meet kamal, tomtom, jibs, picklemonkey, steve graham, and others in person was surreal! and not just meet them, but to become fast friends with them all! and since that meet up, any time i've traveled i've checked to see if anyone from [MS] lived in the city, or was going to a club or what not. and it's been cool to meet people in chicago, miami, barcelona, and vienna! and on the same vibe, when unrecogniseduser moved to new orleans we invited him to a mardi gras party. and i'm happy to call that guy on of my best friends now!!! and when he moved to vienna it allowed me to meet another fellow ms'er in troklo who's become another great friend! steve graham is another of my best friends! i don't stop in as much as i used to, i like others got really sick of the negativity that some people spouted. and just life itself got a bit more involved i guess! haha. i'm trying to visit more often though. in all, it's been a fantastic place to get new music, talk with like minded people, and for me at least, the chance to meet some great people who've enriched my life! i think i'm gonna hit that donate button up top after thinking about all this!
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
5000 posts in, 5 years as a 'active' member, as opposed to showing up and ripping off sets. All I can say is thank you people/mods of [ms] for being what it is today. As I look back if it wasn't for this, my thesis paper, which I am strenuously working on to submit tomorrow could not have been possible. My car driving music would have been bland. My train hopping music would have been too cheesy. My arguments about vinyl would have been pointless. So, I guess this place works somehow.
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
Wow... This is a pretty awesome thread... Love reading all the posts.
I can't really put in words what [ms] means to me.... I'd be writing for days ... Lol. I will say this though, I feel like a lot of you are really cool peeps... The time, dedication, and selfless contribution never fails to amaze me...
I have gotten through some really rough times ... It's been my main stay from 2002... The only forum that I choose to be a member of for so many years... Not sure what I would do if it went away... I'd' be crushed. I understand that life changes and sometimes even I don't find time to stop by as much as I used to.... I do miss a ton of old schoolers though...
Re: What Has Mercury Server meant to you?
I posted quite a lot back in the days when Bedrock was a monthly party in London and I used to get out and about quite a bit.
My music tastes changed a bit and I drifted off to weirder corners of the net, but I've always had an ear out for Diggers work.
A few years on and I'm married with a mortgage and a kid but music will always be there and I've found myself checking up on MS more often again lately, its always been a friendly community and glad its still running
