I went to a World Market store with a friend today, first time I'd been. It was kind of fun. Lots of wine, which I didn't expect. Some stuff was way over-priced. My friend kept telling me "Cupcake" wine was good. Never heard of it.

"Cupcake Vineyards wines are luscious, creamy, silky, zesty, intense, elegant, decadent, complex…"

sounds interesting enough, but I didn't buy any.

Re: Random Thoughts

I can't find a protein bar that tastes good and isn't higher in carbs than protein. Why are they 16 g carbs, 16 g fat & 5 g protein and called protein bars? or is that just fine? And Maltitol syrup & polydextrose... guess I have to google all of these ingredients.

Any suggestions?

#1718483Post 9 of 271

Re: Random Thoughts

Honestly - I'd suggest getting your protein elsewhere - getting your carbs from bars if needed. I like the cliff mojo bars. A quality protein bar is basically just nuts and grains and veggies and stuff, if you want organic, which is the healthy route for protein bars. I'd suggest protein powder - pure pea protein and/or hemp. But that's just me.

Re: Random Thoughts

The healthiest protein bars look like this, and cost $3 each. I'd say pass.

Re: Random Thoughts

I wasn't sure if they were going to change the original random thoughts thread back to it or not. They could change this one to "Random Food/Drink Thoughts" if they'd rather it not be the same. or whatever works.

$3 or not, I would buy those bars, they look delicious. I just need something quick/easy for the morning for when I'm sick of just nuts, seeds, etc.

I consume Quest Protein Bars.

Otherwise you can make your own raw ones, heaps of recipes on the internet.

Re: Way, way too much information

Thanks Feather, that Quest company sounds great! I will give them a try based on your recommendation. Their marketing really appeals to me as well... sounds like it's just what I'm looking for. Wish I had time to make my own.

#1718598Post 26 of 271

Re: Way, way too much information

I'm skeptical about the true amount of carbs in those "quest" bars. Kiwi remember my comment about food > bars? I'd suggest food and then a pure protein powder like hemp or pea or some other plant based protein like "plant head."

Read as this article about protein bars, especially the last paragraph: Nutrition Bars: Healthy or Hype?

If you are working out 5 days a week and on a calorie deficit then a protein bar 2 or 3 times per week is ok. But you would never want to make a habit of eating them daily, period.

#1718601Post 27 of 271

Re: Way, way too much information

Take a piece of Ezekial Bread, toast it. Cut in half. One half cottage cheese, one half peanut butter (organic, just peanuts and salt) and apple slices (cold ideally) or banana.

A few spoonfuls of greek yogurt, and you are good to go. that's what I do for breaky.

Re: Way, way too much information

Consumerlab reviewed Quest bars but I haven't read their report, you have to sign up at their site to see it. Might be worth it. The last paragraph from the article FL provided is about labeling of the bars:

"To complicate matters, you may not be able to judge every bar by its wrapper. In October 2001, when ConsumerLab.com announced the findings of its independent laboratory tests of 30 nutrition bars, 18 did not meet the claims of ingredient levels on the label. More than any other misrepresentation, about one-half of the nutrition bars exceeded the carbohydrate levels stated on the wrapper (one bar promoted as a low-carbohydrate diet product claimed it had just 2 grams of carbohydrates, but testing showed it actually contained 22 grams)."

So... that's good to know, and of course non-processed food is better, I agree. I also don't want to overload my system with protein because it's hard on the kidneys. Balance is key. I was just asking for when I'm having a really busy day and find myself running out of the house without breaky (cute word)...like just once in a while, not everyday. I find if I have a little something early on, I'm less apt to overeat later in the day.

However, I am definitely at risk for the convenience of them, especially if tasty, and if not really healthy, I recognize the danger in eating them regularly... thanks! I will use caution. And that article suggested eating them with grapes or berries, I'd go with blueberries or raspberries.

Re: Way, way too much information

"if it seems to good to be true..."

these "protein bar" companies feed off naive people looking for a quick fix. "2 carbs?" ummm no. Stick to whole foods, make breakfast the night before. Do whatever it takes, but don't rely on protein bars. They are all crap, unless they are made of whole ingredients, period.

of course, that's just like my opinion. If the bars work for Feather and taste great, and he has 6-pack abs, and feels great, then keep eating them! :)

Menage Trois are great, one of my fav inexpensive go to wines, including Red Diamond (Merlot, Washington State) and a few others.

BTW What of those pop-ups, I haven't seen one, can you send me a screenshot?

No offence dude but you seem to be reacting from a point of scepticism to protein bars in general without reading the ingredient breakdown I posted. No smoke and mirrors there, it states the amount of carbs.

I'm as allergic to the snake oils out there as anybody, the health food and supplement industry is full of hype and nonsense, so I know where you're coming from.

But for some easy homemade stuff that doesn't require baking, etc, look into raw foods protein snacks, my friend has been making these. Re: Way, way too much information

The popups are gone Kamal. It was some bug my computer picked up while in DC.

@Feather - the quest bars may be legit. but whole foods > chemicals that act like sugar etc will always be better for your body. But, if you can't get your protein that way, then these Quest bars seem to be a great alternative, along with Victory bars.

Personally, these bars make me crave real sugar later in the day/night... such as ice cream, etc.

Thanks Kamal for letting me know your opinion of Cupcake wines. My friend enjoys their white wines too. I've never really enjoyed white wines; preferring pink or red. But, I will give both of these labels a try based on your and FL's opinions. I actually rarely drink wine/alcohol, but there are occasions when it's really nice to have some, like when people are over for a visit. This really beats trial & error way of picking out some.:Smiling:

Re: Way, way too much information

I went through a scotch streak in the middle but came to realize it's not really my thing. Unless it's an extremely HOT day, it's cool white wines or reds on colder days. Else it's just chilled beers.

I'm not too macho to admit to enjoying a nice white wine spritzer during the summer months. Just add ice and ginger ale or tonic water :)

okay? okay... night night cupcake :I surren:

Re: Random Thoughts

Don't want to bump this thread up, honestly, but I want to report back that I've gotten some Quest bars and they are definitely not junk and you can tell right away by the taste and texture, no sugar. They will require getting used to for that reason & I can't imagine eating one everyday, wow, they are potent... but, my husband loves the cookies & creme one (yuck to me) while I found the white chocolate & raspberry tolerable for a quick snack in a pinch. And I like that they make you want to drink lots of water afterwards. I know tastes vary, but what's your favorite flavor -- there are so many? Thanks!! They are just what I was looking for.
