[LEFT][COLOR=#FFFFFF][FONT=Helvetica][URL="http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/pinch"]Pinch[/URL] and [URL="http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/mumdance"]Mumdance[/URL] have unveiled a new collaborative mix, due out on [URL="http://www.residentadvisor.net/record-label.aspx?id=1100"]Tectonic Recordings[/URL] next month.
Appropriately titled [I]Pinch B2B Mumdance[/I], the 19-track mix works its way through a number of the two producer's own cuts, made solo, in collaboration with each other, and, in Mumdance's case, in collaboration with [URL="http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/logos"]Logos[/URL]. It celebrates the latest mutations from UK dance music's ever-shifting frontline, and there's a healthy number of unreleased cuts, including [URL="http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/shed"]Shed[/URL]'s remix of [url="http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/djdb.php?id=1441"]Pinch[/url]'s "Obsession (The Possession)."
"This mix was the perfect chance to sit down with [url="http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/djdb.php?id=1441"]Pinch[/url] and bring together a sonic which we both feel we have been working towards for a while, albeit from very different angles," says Mumdance. "In my opinion the dance music climate in the UK is enjoying a healthy and extremely interesting transitional period; one which I would draw parallels to the 93/94 "proto" era when people were literally making up the rules as they went along. This mix is an ode to that time and our attempt at throwing some ideas out there, with the hope of sparking some imaginations & pushing things further forward."
Pinch adds: "I like my music to have interesting percussion; some bass, space—and arranged with a sense of grace. It was there in dubstep for me for many years but then I got a bit bored with the beats. Same with D&B before that. I see this mix as a part of the next step in that story." We spoke with [url="http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/djdb.php?id=1441"]Pinch[/url] and Mumdance via email to find out more about the mix:[/FONT][/COLOR][/LEFT][INDENT][B]How did you guys go about recording the mix back-to-back?[/B]
[B]Pinch:[/B] We didn’t record it live—the mix was very much a planned affair. We worked to finish up music with this mix specifically in mind—the result being that the mix is fully populated with fresh rhythms, barely even on dubplate!
[B]Mumdance:[/B] I think the mix almost has the ethos of a "mixtape," as Rob says. Both of us worked hard to finish music especially for this project, alongside a number of the other artists featured. I see this mix as a scene report, or a "state of affairs," a document which encapsulates what is happening at the moment and the possibilities for the future.
[B]Mumdance, you say UK dance music is undergoing a "healthy and extremely interesting transitional period." What recent developments have excited you most?[/B]
[B]Mumdance:[/B] I feel at the moment, certainly in the spheres that I'm operating in, there is no big overruling genre which everyone is adhering to. Everything is much more fragmented, so a lot of people are experimenting and making music which isn't trying to fit into any pre-determined category, leading to a lot more original music. Mirroring this is the fact that a lot of the club audiences are beginning to be a lot more receptive to experimental sounds. A year ago I was clearing dance floors with my selections, and now the audience are a lot more prepared to trust what I'm doing, keep an open mind and going wherever the music takes them.
[B]Pinch:[/B] A bit like the early days in dubstep for similar reasons. Blur the boundaries!
[B]Will the unreleased tunes on this mix see release down the line?[/B]
[B]Pinch:[/B] Some most likely will—maybe not in the exact same form—and mostly not for a while. There are a bunch of tracks in the mix lined up for eventual release on Tectonic. It's a [url="http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/djdb.php?id=494"]glimpse[/url] into the future right here! Soon after the mix comes out I'll be dropping my next 12-inch and first for a while on Tectonic with "Obsession (The Possession)" along with the [url="http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/djdb.php?id=609"]Shed[/url] remix. Probably one of, if not [I]the[/I] darkest tune I've ever made!
[B]Mumdance:[/B] A few of mine on there will definitely be seeing the light of day, but not for a while.
