Re: The Best sound system of all time.

Informative article on the matter... didn't realize how much acoustics matter

RA: The esoteric art of great sound

"

[I]"Next time you walk into an empty building, no matter what it is, if you just clap, the time that reverb takes to disappear is the key to how it's going to sound." Cufley's job when getting a room ready for a club night is to try and get rid of as much of the reverb as possible. As Cufley explains, "The first port of call with trying to improve the sound in a building like a warehouse would be heavy theatrical draping. It's one of the thickest things you can put on the wall temporarily. It really helps with the high-mid and high frequencies, and it will stop the clatter and the reverb."

This added reverb not only sounds unpleasant, but it also "tires your brain" over the course of a night's clubbing. Your mind is hardwired—from the hunter-gatherer days—to judge space and time through sound. Reverb bouncing around the space of a building—"secondary reflections" if you want to use the technical term—puts your brain into overdrive as it attempts to unscramble the flood of information it's being sent. Check out Josh Wink's set from Gare in Porto, which uses the same sound system as DC10

Gare Porto:

When it comes to improving the listening experience in a tunnel Void Acoustics had some bright bright ideas for Porto's new club GARE PORTO - owned by the DJ Duo Freshkitos.

GARE features an all-Void system, designed to deliver an exciting, high impact sound throughout the club. The club's main room occupies a 35-metre tunnel, with a ceiling height of 10 metres and just 6 metres wide, with the system incorporating Void's signature design, the triple-horn Air Motion speakers, as well as the Stasys 8 dual 18" horn loaded enclosures. Friday nights alternate between the fast paced sounds of Drum'n'bass and House Music while Saturdays are devoted to Techno Music.

Considered one of the best clubs in Europe and now a favourite of so many artists in many different genres, Gare is the club in Porto where you go for the music and get to experience the alternative culture of the underground scene.

The Sound System:

When it comes to improving the listening experience in a tunnel, Portuguese installer Raul Ribeiro of T2 Produção e Eventos and Void Acoustics had some bright bright ideas for Porto's new club, GARE Club - owned by DJs Freshkitos! GARE Club features an all-Void system, designed to deliver an exciting, high impact sound throughout the club. The club's main room occupies a 35-metre tunnel, with a ceiling height of 10 metres and just 6 metres wide, with the system incorporating Void's signature design, the triple-horn Air Motion speakers, as well as the Stasys 8 dual 18" horn loaded enclosures.

the main room is equipped with 2 x Air Motions, facing the audience, complemented by 3 x Stasys 8s. 2 further Air Motions provide an extra degree of intelligibility at the back, creating a virtual "square" of sound. Extra sub reinforcement is from a fourth Stasys 8 cabinet. The all-Void installation includes 2 of the compact Impulse 4ts for the bar area, which benefits from some sub leakage from the main dance floor area. The VIP room and wine bar are equipped with 2 x B12s and 2 x VSUBs, mimicking the main system set-up but with a lower SPL. A pair of Mycro 8s give the club's trendy entrance lounge a comfortable ambience, with comprehensive intelligibility, bringing guests into the Void sound field from the moment they enter the club. The DJ Booth was built around 2 x Air Tens and 1 x VSUB, in line with the many live acts performing at the Club, providing a powerful sound in a small package. Amplification throughout the installation is from Void's range of Kryo Dual power amps, and the system includes the Livedrive and Digidrive loudspeaker management systems.

The one at Home in London was pretty special, you could feel the vibrations going through your body. Fabric always made a big deal of theirs, but I never walked away from there thinking wow that system was amazing.

Re: The Best sound system of all time.

TWILO - Everything was tight and clear and you could be anywhere on the dance floor and it sounded amazing. The acoustics were amazing in that place. I have very fond memories of sasha and diggers 3rd anniversary party we got there at midnight and didn't leave until 1:30 in the afternoon it was in 2000 when things started to get deep and damn did S&D work that system that night. But probably my fav night was diggers Solo for the 4th anniversary party when sasha was still sidelines with his ear issue. That night and every month during that time is when diggers EXPLODED!!!!! I get choked up when i think of those days. damn wish they had camera phones like they do now back then..

I think these days it's much of a muchness. Home, Cream, Fabric, Space, Amneisia, all had great sound systems. I think if I said one was better, it would more than likely be based on which one I had the best night at. If I was having a great night, I wouldn't be spending my time analysing the soundsystem.

Lucky!! After hearing the reviews from there last year I was planning on going as well.. a few friends were there and they said that he brought Twilo back! If I didn't have to deal with personal stuff I would've gone for sure.. especially since we won't get a Vagabond night next year :(

Re:

So subjective. It also relates to your feeling of the night/venue at that time. Overall, I'd have to say Fabric. Twilo was ok but not mind blowing. Not even close. I realize that I'm going to get thrown under the bus for that but whatever. For me, it's always been the small venues that have really stepped up the sound game.
