one important thing to realise about the RA poll is that you can only vote for dj's who you have seen play in the calender year. Therefore I wanst able to vote for diggers, for example. DJ's who are touring a lot will therefore finish higher on average...I think its a good list actually...

RA Poll: Top DJs of 2013

The top 20...

He stepped out for an extended interview at the IMS this year, and it was like watching a film version of a book you've read—familiar but not quite as you'd imagined. He also opened up with an RA podcast that dug deep into his home listening habits. Perhaps it's this sense of distance that keeps us intrigued in his DJing, year after year.

They're stoic in the booth, and they have no lyrics in which to reveal their feelings. Mano Le Tough is an exception. This Irish artist croons on his tracks, loves a sad melody and appeared in tears on one record sleeve. The guy is practically the Morrissey of house music. Combine this with a knack for rocking a party, and it's easy to see how he slipped into the top 20.

Her debut album, Comfort, showed just how far her range extends beyond the dance floor. When we profiled her in the summer, it seemed like she'd found her rhythm as a touring DJ after the madness that was 2011, her breakthrough year. It's given her the stability to make the artistic expressions she so highly values.

Something tells us that at this time next year he'll have added even more to his already peerless resume.

Beyer is, along with Dixon, the standard-bearer for Innervisions' warmly epic aesthetic. And whether on the Croatian coast or in the confines of a Lost In A Moment marathon, he's used it to craft some magical sets.

When he started to make waves in 2007, after years spent honing his craft in Berlin, the talk was of a DJ who used melodies, vocals and warmth to tell his story. Six years later, and these guiding principles are firmer than ever. He may have an easily defined approach, but Dixon's sets throw up some interesting contradictions—the music he plays is accessible, but he retains underground credibility; his performances at once feel safe and unpredictable. The platform for Dixon's ascent has been Innervisions, the label he runs with Frank Wiedemann and Kristian Beyer of Âme. This aesthetic was best experienced in 2013 at Lost In A Moment, the Innervisions event series. This title was only used for the first time this year, and it felt telling: it was as though they'd finally figured out a name for their mission. Dixon has made an art out of creating transcendent dance floor moments, and it's the reason he's at number one in our poll this year.

Re: RA top 100 DJs

yeah.. it's a good list... but then again every poll is a popularity contest - djmag top 100 is for EDM, trance and dubstep heroes.. ,RA is for underground house, techno and electronica.. both polls are funny and should not be taken so serious (as a lot of fans and promoters unfortunately do)..

i wasn't happy about what RA done in the poll this year as it only stopped me voting for my favourite dj's because they hadn't played in scotland.... that's fair enough you might think but if you look at it the chances of these dj's ever getting to play is different countries is going to be slim because we all know how much promoters value polls like this

i thought it was quite good that you had to have seen the DJs play this year to vote for them. My long term list rarely changes (diggers, burridge, craig richards, nick warren...., but this year I saw great individual shows from Peter Kruder and Mano le tough, and agoria, so its cool i thought back and recognized those great nights.

yea that is fair enough but what about dj's like ricky ryan etc that i,ve only seen play in the america's.... deff on form this year for me and i'd of voted for him but i couldn't because i'd not seen him

i can see the point of RA doing this but its only benefiting those dj's with a large following rather than putting talented dj's up the ladder

Well as i said these polls are funny for me and i don't take them serious..after all i just wanted to vote for my favourite DJs..and btw in 2013 i think people should be able to choose their favourite DJs even without seeing them live (with so many live sets, podcasts, youtube videos floating around the web and so on..)
i didn't vote but this was the way i was thinking about it as well

anyone sounds great on a big sound system but to truly find out how good a dj really is i think you have to listen at home

Re: RA top 100 DJs

Alright! Steve Lawler made the list, albeit @ 90, but still in the top 100.

Re: RA top 100 DJs

I think it's a good way to make people cast their votes. If I was free to vote for whoever I want I would've of chosen the same DJs I always vote for. But like this I actually thought about which were the best DJ sets I heard this year. Picked DJs (Inspirescu, Kruder, Tiefschwarz) I don't think I would've done otherwise. I take the list for what it is, a list, but at least they try to make their poll somewhat credible

Re: RA top 100 DJs

Good list .. reflects diverse tastes but has tonnes of credibility ... But no Guy Gerber or Josh Wink in there ?? :youdork:

As for the people seeing certain DJs live - can't believe that many of the people voting have see Tale of Us this year !

Some of the list have been v good live ... Dixon stunning playing 7+ hours in Leeds, Art Dept in Ibiza (Destino) were great too.

Of the trendy names e.g. tINI was v poor at Space though (took an experienced pro like Steve Bug to save the night).

Great to see Diggers and Sasha doing well, Hernan in there and Guy J being prominent.

Re: RA top 100 DJs
but at least they try to make their poll somewhat credible
so you don't think its a way of drawing people to RA by telling people they can only vote for people that is on their event calendar ?

its still open to abuse, i mean i could of said i'd been to see people in america and stuff all over the world, i chose not to do that but i bet a few people did.... i can see the way you're thinking about the credibility though but i think they've just shut out a good chunk of credible people voting in it this year

the more popular a dj is is reflected on how many gigs that dj gets, if its a lot of gigs then that means a lot more people are more likely to vote for that dj rather than vote for a dj that has played half as many gigs... i think its a mistake because people who circulate the circuit will have an obvious grasp on the poll without the up and coming talent coming through...

for those people that are saying these polls don't matter, they do, they matter to people running clubs because if a promoter is going to book number one on the list then there is more of a chance of him/her filling the club and making a good turn over

Re: RA top 100 DJs

I wish they would all do a studio mixset to vote on as well.

Each DJ should have to do a mixset for RA, they then get 6 months of playtime before voting, and we should see the live votes so if someone is getting lots of votes you might listen to someone new, then you can vote on that set as well.

I'm a bit set in my ways when it comes to listening to new DJs, and that may make me listen to a few new ones.

Re: RA top 100 DJs

2 Brilliant articles, although they are jokes, obviously:

Tiesto Slams Resident Advisor Top DJs Poll

Dutch trance star, Tiesto, has lashed out at Resident Advisor’s Top 100 DJ poll claiming that the popular poll is “fixed.”

“This is an absolute disgrace,” bemoaned the DJ. “I can’t believe I didn’t feature in the list. I can accept not winning the thing but not even placing? How does that even happen? The answer is it doesn’t, it’s a fix. That’s the only explanation that makes sense.”

When it was pointed out to Tiesto that the poll is a public vote and decided for by the people he claimed that the voters were “a pack of clueless mongs,” before insisting that he is “one of the highest paid DJs on the planet so obviously that means I must be one of the best.”

“How is anyone expected to place if it’s based on people’s opinions? he added. “Who do I need to fuck and/or pay to appear in the damned thing? Just tell me who, cause I’ll do it. Do they want me to stop playing Adagio For Strings? Because I will. I’ll even do a Deep House set, anything to get the recognition my price tag deserves.”

Tiesto, pictured in happier times with former lover, Bono, questioned the credibility of the poll by pointing out that there was very little crossover between the DJ Mag Top 100 poll and the Resident Advisor one.

“With so few people appearing in both polls it’s obvious that the RA poll isn’t credible,” he claimed. “I play at gigs where people paid $40,000 just for the privilege of a private table, does that mean nothing to these people?”

Tiesto concluded his diatribe against RA by insisting that he’ll dedicate the next year of his life to placing on the poll in 2014 by playing “more expensive gigs and earning as much money as I possibly can. Then they’ll have to vote for me. And if they don’t then I suppose I can just use the money to buy my way onto the list – like the DJ Mag poll.”

Young Hardwell Fan Disappointed Not To Know Any DJs On The Resident Advisor Top 100 Poll

A disgruntled Hardwell fan has today expressed her disappointment with the Resident Advisor Top DJs of 2013 poll, after claiming that she does not know a single DJ who made the list.

Stacy Jackson (22), claimed that, despite her in depth knowledge of EDM, she ‘hadn’t a clue who any of those guys were’ and that she would never pay money to go to a show where the ‘music and mixing skills of the DJ were more important than props and gimmicks’.

Miss Jackson, spoke of her disillusionment, “This so-called list is a complete joke. There are literally no DJs that I know of on there and I’ve been going to EDM events ever since it became popular back in 2009 so I think I should know who is who by now,” she explained. ”I’ve seen it all when it comes to EDM, I’ve been to Electric Zoo, Electric Daisy Carnival and Escape From Wonderland. I’ve even had Armin van Buuren sign my tits and gotten Steve Aoki’s cream in my hair on more than one occasion,” she continued.

“But one thing I’ve never seen is a nobody like Sasha or Ben Klock headlining an awesome festival. I mean who the hell are these guys?” she dismissively asked. “Some of them look really old too and aren’t even slightly hot. This whole list is a bit of an insult to my intelligence if I’m being completely honest,” she added.

“Everyone knows that Hardwell is the world’s number one DJ. Before today I always thought that Dixon was a county in Nebraska,” she continued, “And now you’re telling me that HE is the world’s number one DJ. I don’t think so! How can you be at the top of the list when you’ve never even made a track with Rihanna or Beyonce? The whole thing just doesn’t make sense,” continued the clearly confused young woman.

“I’ve spent all day looking up videos of these guys on Youtube. I can’t even tell if half of them are DJs or plumbers because all I keep finding are videos of boiler rooms, if I wanted to look at boiler room I’d go hang out in my attic,” she added. “When I did find some real videos of these guys they were so boring. There were no cakes, the DJs hardly ever put their hands in the air and the bass only dropped once or twice per track,” she continued disgustedly.

“The people at Resident Advisor really need to ask themselves is EDM about skilled DJs playing good music or is it about generically marketable douche bags playing mediocre music while using cheap gimmicks to distract an uneducated but extremely commercially profitable crowd,” she concluded.

is a good idea to allow sets heard online i think. In this case I would have voted for burridge for sure. The lovely panda and burning man sets i heard online were then best of the year.

of the dj's I've seen this year, Troxler wouldn't have even been in the top 100. He was awful last month in the pre-creamfields party. awful as in poor mixing, poor tracks and poor outfit...

Dixon is a real genius, head and shoulders above everyone at the moment. If anyone hasn't heard him yet then I recommend you do so asap.

The music he plays is just heavenly and so inspiring. Makes you fall in love with Dance music again.

Yeah he's been without peer for 20 odd years. I'm glad he didn't show up at number one in this shitty poll or he'd probably pack it all in, not that I imagine he'd even know what RA is. I didn't till i clicked the link in this thread.

No twittering, no facebook, no begging people to vote for him. Just constantly ahead of the game, smashing peoples' heads in and taking their legs away every time he's at the controls.

If extra points could be scored for best clothes, best beard, best tattoos, best producer, best remixer, then he'd piss on everyone else in the list on those counts too.
