Below is a timeline for something I purchased online recently. It shipped all the way from China, but the last 3 hops are of real interest. The package departed Louisville KY at 4:15 am and arrived Pittsburgh PA at 5:21 am, a distance that takes about 6 hours by road. Let's just give it the benefit of the doubt and say the package was flown by air.

The big kicker then is the departure scan of 6:16 am from Pittsburgh having arrived my town at 6:54 am, a distance that takes roughly 2.5 hours by car to cover was covered in 38 minutes. And you can't give it the benefit of the doubt here cause my town doesn't have an airport. A real head-scratch-er this.

Location Date Local Time Activity Cumberland, MD, United States 10/08/2013 6:59 A.M. Out For Delivery 10/08/2013 6:54 A.M. Arrival Scan Pittsburgh, PA, United States 10/08/2013 6:16 A.M. Re: Are shipping / tracking times a sham?

International shipments can be tricky.. i've had a few where the tracking system wasn't all that accurate.

I am actually waiting on one today, we will see if they can get to my house before 1500

Re: Are shipping / tracking times a sham?

A few times I tracked my package and it said it was delivered, when in fact the delivery didn't happen until later in the day. Weird.

Re: Are shipping / tracking times a sham?

they may be fudged a bit to "meet their metrics"... that's just a guess though. kind of like airlines do with the on-time departures/arrivals.

Re: Are shipping / tracking times a sham?

I have been using i-parcel for some stuff from US. my understanding is that they use Australia post for the final leg (for Australia obviously) at this stage the AUS post stick on their own labels and the item was delivered..the item was scanned as delivered at an after hours time..it wasnt as my housemate was home during the day to receive it.

So it seems that the item is logged in the AUS Post system and when thye driver heads back to base there is a confirmation of delivery entered into the I-parcel system manually...

In short, it has to do with 3rd party logistics used at various stages of the supply chain, often each firm having their own labeling and data tracking system, not a universal system.

Something like that...that's how I have seen it operate in the industry.

Mind you i didn't read your post too closely.
