I use to love all new EDM at one point in my life, and this happened:

before that it was all amazing like this:

Just thought I'd share that.

okay, I'll bite... why?

Mind you when I say all, I mean everything that comes out. Not everything period. With that being said, I've liked very little since 2005. That's all.

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

Even before I watch the Trentemoller track, I'm just going to ask; was this specific track that made it worse?

I never had any issues with Trentemoller, thought he was pretty brilliant live.

I feel as if though EDM can never stay the same obviously enough, people get older, and bolder and for artists to continue to make a career out of it, they obliviously need to cater for the up and coming generation. It's a tough one, but you know there are still some wicked artists, songs, etc. etc.

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

I like trentemøller specially his older stuff. As stated before music has to change in order to stay fresh. What sounds innovative and cutting edge right now might sound cheesy and tacky in a couple of yeas time, I guess it just depends on what rocks you boat. For me the last couple of years have been excellent music wise, things slowed down and we got some pretty amazing baselines. Hope you find you way back because you're missing out on a lot of good music.

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

I was listening to The Field's new album today and thought it's pretty good for what's new music, in the context of this thread (not comparing it with his old stuff, etc).

[SOUNDCLOUD]https://soundcloud.com/kompakt/cupids-head[/SOUNDCLOUD]

Trentemoller has gotten progressively weirder/different from when we first heard him. I still prefer his old stuff.

I don't get 'Do What You Do' at all. How do you go from atmospheric, lush instrumentation and vocals to 16-Bit video game music?

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

2005 was the worst for electronic music with that Electro phase .. which was then followed by minimal.

Music evolves and changes, and the producers/labels (and taste) change. Where DJs the end up after this is interesting, as Sasha's sound is now very dar away from the music he was playing back in the GU days.

Listening to Dixon's Essential Mix in some ways I'm happy that things have changed ... back in the pog days many tried to imitate the sound. Now we have more diversity.

The first 2 hours Digweed played at Tox Club in ibiza was a dark and intense as 2000 .... its just that he didn't have the NYC Twilo era records and a fresh batch of Breeder music ... he had the latest batch of new music that he was road testing. John was on top of his game and it was a privilege to hear.

It was this track that made me feel like a huge needle had just gone across a record. Not saying anything bad about who made it, produced it, remixed it. The sound just changed abruptly. It was completely different than all the other experiences that I had before as far as EDM. I still remember how I felt the first time I heard Leftfield, the orb, underworld, the prodigy, breeder, slacker, voyager, etc, etc... I didn't expect music to stay the same, I guess I expected it to not leave me so abruptly.

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

I think a persons enthusiasm for EDM in particular is mostly correlated with the amount that person is going out with friends and having fun nights out. We connect the older sounds with fun because we were young, naive, carefree and going out every weekend. Having shit weekends and having amazing ones too. I dunno about you but I don't go out and dance much anymore. A lot of that has to do with that article that was posted about the end of djing. I think a Dj is probably only as enthusiastic as his passion for his craft and his time invested crate digging or discovering new tunes.

Those are just my thoughts. Al have you listed to Digweeds Punta Del Este set?

Agree,

I think, half of 2004 till 2007-2008 or so, was a very bad era, the transition between the classic progress into the electro-minimal sound was a complete disaster, too much noise everywhere and very low quality tracks released in that period, obviously there are exceptions but in general, for me, was very hard to find good tracks. fortunately thats change and we can find amazing music today.

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

I remember Lemon8 or some other famous producer said that every 3 years the crowd and the trend in electronic music both change ...

I must agree with that statement (at least of what i have seen and heard here in Bulgaria)..When i started to listen to electronic music back in 2000 almost all of the DJs here played TECHNO (Jeff Mills,Dave Clarke,Adam Beyer and similar type of sound),others few played progressive and tribal house..goa trance and drum'n' bass were popular too..In 2003-4 things started to change and house music became more popular in da clubs - mainly funky progressive sound (Masiello,Omid 16 B,Rowan Blades type of sound) and techno was played on the big parties..(Carl Cox @ Festivalna Hall in December 2004 - WHAT A NIGHT!!! WHAT A NIGHT!!)..Electro took the clubs here by storm in the next few years (2005-2006-2007) but you can check out some sets from Dance Club Mania and from Plazma in Plovdiv to see that progressive/tribal sound still was the preferable one..Funny thing is that it wasn't until 2005 when this commercial sound known as TRANCE became popular here (thats when was Tiesto's first gig in Sofia)... Minimal era (2007-2008-2009) changed everything here..minimal was the most popular electronic music genre since old classic techno here,i must admit..it was absolutely everywhere - from small clubs to big raves..2009-2011 - tech house was the dominating sound at the clubs..2011-till now - deep house and nu disco/indie dance type of sound are dominating underground clubs..big parties (Solar Summer @ Cacao Beach) are dominated by EDM (Guetta,Fedde Le Grand) and trance (Tiesto,Armin Van Burren),but i must say that probably last few years are the best for electronic music couse we have so much options and good music from all the different genres =)

What i have learned from the DJs i like and follow over the years is exactly that - music evolves constantly so we must evolve too..there will be always good and bad music..but if you have created some criteria for ur musical preferences in that time it will be much easier for you to discover all the new good joints hehe

btw i love the electro-proggy era of electronic music..one of my fav sets of all time is Digweed's set from Homelands in 2005..so much energy in that set..=)

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

Is a change of genre too subtle as opposed to a complete abandonment?

Your decision obviously and it was made to please you not me.

Peace.

Flo-j i think there is an inverse relationship between age and bpm? In saying that the commercial dance stuff isn't banging out over 125bpm anyway.

The more I type the less sense I make.

Tired.

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

For me, Sasha commited the sin back in 2004 when he started playing Felix Da Housecat - Watching Cars Go By which brought prog rock into prog house... and that gave way to the electro mess for the next few years. Digweed kind of lost it for me from 2005-2006 but came back really strong in 2007 (remember the Warehouse Project Ess Mix?) and generally has remained true to his sound even til now (give or take a few pluses and minues). Sasha OTOH... I still listen to him occasionally but he moved away too much from my comfort zone. The vibe's not the same anymore.

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

Yeah ;) There're two threads in GYY talking about today's EDM, which I get, but I also think just listening to those 3 sets indicate there're still some strong prog music out there. Digweed is definitely no longer as melodic as what we think of prog but Warren, Cattaneo, Guy J, Wisternoff, Saiz of course, I think they're all still carrying the torch.

Ricky is one of my favourite, His style is unique mixing the best deep house, melodic, downtempo house and everything thats sounds good with long transitions between the mixes, His taste for the music is great.

You should try with some of his recent shows in PyR.

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

I dug up a 2004 Sasha set and gave it another listen. "Watching Cars Go By" is not really bad at all. It was really Spektrum - Kinda New (Tiefschwarz Dub) that I didn't like... prog rock/electros ensued thereafter.

I was listening to "sasha_&digweed-_renaissance_essential_mix_09-may-2004"... first hour is bangin' (Digs). Second hour, Sasha's on a different planet for me (not in a good way).

#1699847Post 40 of 42

Re: This is what caused me to stop liking all new EDM

I'd describe Ricky Ryan as cruisy and easy-listening. I don't think I've ever heard a banging set from him. Actually FO I was gonna recommend him and Marcelo Vasami in your request thread in P&R.
