I'm sure most of you geniuses already knew all of this, but for us regular folk, I thought there were a couple details that were interesting:

At that time, American and British accents hadn't yet diverged. What's surprising, though, is that Hollywood costume dramas get it all wrong: The Patriots and the Redcoats spoke with accents that were much closer to the contemporary American accent than to the Queen's English. It is the standard British accent that has drastically changed in the past two centuries, while the typical American accent has changed only subtly. Traditional English, whether spoken in the British Isles or the American colonies, was largely "rhotic." Rhotic speakers pronounce the "R" sound in such words as "hard" and "winter," while non-rhotic speakers do not. Today, however, non-rhotic speech is common throughout most of Britain. For example, most modern Brits would tell you it's been a "hahd wintuh." According to John Algeo in "The Cambridge History of the English Language" (Cambridge University Press, 2001), this shift occurred because people of low birth rank who had become wealthy during the Industrial Revolution were seeking ways to distinguish themselves from other commoners; they cultivated the prestigious non-rhotic pronunciation in order to demonstrate their new upper-class status. "London pronunciation became the prerogative of a new breed of specialists — orthoepists and teachers of elocution. The orthoepists decided upon correct pronunciations, compiled pronouncing dictionaries and, in private and expensive tutoring sessions, drilled enterprising citizens in fashionable articulation," Algeo wrote. The lofty manner of speech developed by these specialists gradually became standardized — it is officially called "Received Pronunciation" — and it spread across Britain. However, people in the north of England, Scotland and Ireland have largely maintained their traditional rhotic accents. According to Algeo, after the Revolutionary War, these cities were "under the strongest influence by the British elite."

History and Nationality are both very interesting subjects

Weird that the story carries a picture of an African family meeting a German woman ??

Only to the extent that it shows how much a persons environment influences how they speak I suppose.

I don't think a picture can show us much about environments' influence on speech

Ok. What is that you find "weird" about a photo of the President of the United States meeting with the Queen of England in an article that discusses why American's and Brits have different accents? Are you saying the Obama's didn't grow up in America and the Queen didn't grow up in England? Because of course they did, and that's why they have the accents they have.

Re: Why American's and Brits have different accents....

I didn't know the English accent was spoken to appear more upper class but it makes sense, even now that accent sounds very uppity; there is an 'airiness and lightness' that makes it appear as though the speaker is above it all.

The Singaporean accent is indecipherable when we speak English. Back in the day when people began to return from abroad, they would also speak with an adopted accent, sometimes in a very fake manner, to differentiate themselves. I found that quite irritating and offensive.

I often struggle with accents since I'm a foreigner everywhere, but made a conscious effort to NOT pick up any accent.

As a writer I communicate a lot better with the written language than spoken, and my accent doesn't help my case. The lack of an easily recognised and understood accent is also a hazard at work because a native English speaker will always be skeptical of a writer who doesn't speak/sound native.

Take a bunch of dirty chavs, stick them on an island and let them breed for 225 (?)years and you have the nasal sounding Australian. (Pronounced 'strayan)

Not so much a weird photo, just a weird association. Our views of nationality and nationalism are clearly so far apart as to make it difficult to discuss. Let's just say that I believe we are all human beings, after that it's mostly conditioning of peoples' perceptions that create differences where truly there are none.

Just as an aside, as language is part of what we are discussing, can you tell me why you add an apostrophe in error when talking of American's and Obama's but you don't when you talk of Brits and the Queen?

Re: Why American's and Brits have different accents....

^Not "Brits" was because the title of the article didn't add an apostrophe to "Brits" so I took that authors lead on that one... it's not a word I have used very much. In the future I shall think of you Audrey and always add a " ' " if and when I ever type the word "Brit's" again.

Not adding an "apostrophe" to the end of Queen??? where should I have?

So are you saying you think it's not a coincidence that the publisher of that article chose that photo? I guess I didn't read into the photo as much as you did. I still don't fully understand how the photo doesn't represent 3 individuals, 2 of which have different accents.

Evidently this cunt does. Sorry you have to resort to name calling in order to get your point across. Good luck with that.

I remember watching fresh prince of bel air in the 90's and in one show a distant relative from England visited and called wil Smith's square bear cousin a wanker....it wasn't even beeped out...

That's more of a vocabulary issue though.

And you'd be wrong. There is no need for an apostrophe within Brits here, neither is one needed in American's ?? It doesn't make any sense. Interesting that you followed the lead of the author, but then say "I took that authors lead on that one" and miss out the apostrophe where one is required. "The Obama's grew up in America" doesn't make sense either.
In the future I shall think of you Audrey and always add a " ' " if and when I ever type the word "Brit's" again.
A touch of sarcasm? I hope not, I hope i've been some help.
Not adding an "apostrophe" to the end of Queen??? where should I have?
In this instance, no need. Maybe one day, once you get the hang of the Queen's English (for example)

Hope you don't think i'm being pedantic or anything, but in a discussion about the divergence and bastardisation of language, I think there is a relevance.

^You remind me of my mentor from my days in Commercial Real Estate Investing, he was completely American, but very very, very proud of his German heritage. He too likes to point out punctuation errors online sometimes. I guess everyone needs a hobby.

Haha that's very funny, and I'm sure it's true.

You remind me of a guy I once knew who was mute but managed to get a job with Royal Mail. He'd spend every waking hour posting other people's shit but never managed to say anything. :)
