I notice that sometimes when I am fiddling around with my turntables that a tune I mix in does not always sound great when mixed with the tune already playing. What are some tunes you guys know of that you have tried and tested that you think mix well together and produce a smooth transition in a set, keeping the flow of a set? Any posts are greatly appreciated :)

Tunes that mix well into each other
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
You have now entered the world of mixing in keys... 8)
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
keep at it!!!
you'll buck it, every genious needs some time to find a new route in anything they do. maybe you should check out something from a different genre like going breaks or elctro or something more tech for the mix.
experiement and record. :D
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
Personally i don?t care as much if they match or not as where i wanna go with my set
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
^^^what he said.
Mixing in key is great, but only if the track you're mixing into also happens to be a great track like the last. I'd rather hear an out of key mix between two great tunes that go well one after the other than hear a perfect in key mix to a boring track.
And you can't keep doing the same mix between records- it'll get boring for you, and it's also better if you can pull off a more challenging mix with two unlikelys, like if your mixing out of someone else's record.
...but, if your gonna mix in key, go for it! Pull a 2 minute mix instead of a 10 second mix and the tracks will blend in so much better. Most of the beginnings of house records are empty anyway, so use that beat and mix it.
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
tough question. most tracks will flow well into each other if you know how to mix correctly. e.g. which part of the track flows unless they are just so different the feel isn't there.

Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
Here's one that I enjoy mixing:
Felix da housecat - Ready 2 wear(Paperfaces remix) the mix in Studio B - I see girls(Tom Neville remix).
It's usually trial and error in mixing to find out what goes well together for me. However, as my mixing has improved, it's easier to put songs that go well together.
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
i belong to the Pete Tong school of mixing.
Crashe any two random records together and talk over the top of them. Perfect mix everytime!
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
Anthony Pappa has his records sorted into key. Listening to any of his mix compilations and it is difficult to find a mix that does not flow.

Now that you said it I had a flash back to all the radio 1 sets I used to listen too and think about it really hard, it is so true.
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
Hmm, mixing in keys huh. I wish I knew how to key my tunes, since I don't have a piano or guitar to do so.

That is so true.
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
I say let it flow, after a while you'll instinctively cue records that are relative key-wise almost unconsciously.
I used to focus a lot on keys and it fucked up the flow, it seemed a bit unnatural. The best way to incorporate keys into your mixing is to know your records inside out: the key matching will come automatically afterwards, at least enough of it so your key clashes are not too cacophonic. :-D

there has been a web site posted on here before, I wish I could remember what it is, hopefully someone else will remember. but it had a huge data base of choons and the key they are in.
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
Mixing in key is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO overrated it is like a date with Britney Spears. I have never even considered mixing in key and I have never had a bad mix

Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
i raise the bet.
tracks that mix well with every other track.
North Atlantic - Lights Out (Lemon 8 remix) and Lemon 8 - Lose control are tracks that are easy to mix with everything imo

pig and dan - dj took pils in to lonestar new kicks :D
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
I find it easiest to mix remixes of the same records together, then you can progress from slower tunes up to faster tunes taking in various other styles on the way. Ppl tent to think you are a true 'artist' after a performance like that.

crap I need to drop that in post for you, I forgot
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
Ok, that harmonizer website has only a limited number of tunes. Are there any software programs that ACCURATELY can tell me the harmonic key of a tune? Or maybe the BPM as well?

bingo!! ..just listen and try different tracks together... i know sometimes you want to mix 2 specific songs together, but you have to move on and try a different combo....
shouldn't this topic be on [mp]
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
I think mixmeister pro can tell you the keys and bpms of your records. should be easy enough!
Re: Tunes that mix well into each other
its easy to take too much of a scientific approach sometimes, dont look for a formula to a perfect set, someones beast is someone elses beauty. (michael douglas & catherine zeta jones)
play with your style, try new tunes, span genres and when it sounds good to you it will sound good to others

very accurate for the most part...use a mp3 or record a minute or 2 of your track in... 8)
