Re: It's PARTYTIME in Scotland today
Can someone really break it down for me why there are so many parties over her death? I get the jest of it, she was a hated PM, but what are the details of why she was so hated?
Re: It's PARTYTIME in Scotland today
obviously there are always many sides to every story and depending on your experiences of it, will be how you tell it.
I do give her major credit for being the first female Prime minster and because of her there are many more women in politics today.
However, she is despised because she put advocated a 'everyone for themselves' policy over community, trod on the poor at every possible opportunity and made the rich richer. She tried to decimate the National Health Service (from which it will probably never recover). Two of the biggest issues were that she put tens of thousands of people out of work in the north of England, Wales and Scotland. Entire generations were out of work due to the fast closure of many mines and the privatization of previous national entities such as British Coal and British gas. Unemployment was at its highest since the depression -and mainly focused on the north of the UK. On top of that she introduced the 'poll tax' an unfair way of national taxation that favored those of wealth. She tried out the scheme in Scotland only -alienating the entire nation and formalizing the view, that there will never again be a conservative presence in Scotland - and ultimately led to devolution. When the tax was introduced in England it resulting in the london riots and it was ultimately replaced due to public opinion. And then there was section 28 an anti-gay government scheme and her vilification of Liverpool supporters during the Hillsborough tragedy, refused to put sanctions on South African during Apartheid and named Nelson Mandela a terrorist (he was in jail for being black you may recall)... the list in endless.
(thats a mild review)
Divisive is perhaps the fairest summation of her reign!
I thought these front covers showed the range of opinions quite well - be sure to scroll down

I don't get why she said "there is no such thing as society," though. wtf kind of person like that gets elected into office?

Calling Augusto Pinochet (as in the Chilean dictator) a friend of Britain might be a good start.
Calling Nelson Mandela and the ANC a group of terrorists might be another one.
And the stuff mentioned by Huggie as well.
As a woman who broke the glass ceiling - I have to give her a lot of respect for managing to lead and become Prime Minister - it's just a shame that her foreign and domestic policies are a lot of trainwrecks.
She's not really much better than Reagan in the sense that she adopted the same ideology of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", which really shows a tendency to backfire horribly.

Nelson Mandela as described by Wikipedia: A Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, studying law. After the Afrikaner nationalists of the National Party came to power in 1948 and began implementing the policy of apartheid, he rose to prominence in the ANC's 1952 Defiance Campaign, being elected president of the Transvaal ANC branch and overseeing the 1955 Congress of the People. Ah the Germans, yes. They'll be the economic success story that nurtured and invested in it's manufacturing and engineering skills, as opposed to systematically destroying them and creating an imaginary economic growth bubble.

but Mandela was not accused of that. He fully admitted to bombing electric power stations with no human targets in his trial and his closing arguments speech .
His conviction speech is an amazing piece of political theory IMHO - highlighting the awful disparity between white and black political power, education and living conditions - whilst outlining his his hoped for equality by bringing in the UK political system, the US congress and even the magna carter

Violence is awful in any siutation.
growing up seeing the necklacing torture/deaths is one of the most awful things I've ever seen on TV. and of course it was all the Brits fault by setting up the system to begin with (as was India, Australia, Pakistan, Rhodesia etc etc etc etc damn British Empire)
