Hello MS, I read a lot here about your trips around the world, so I´d like to know your comments. I´m looking forward to visit San Francisco (May 2013), and I´m planning to rent a car and travel to Los Angeles. What can you tell me about places and spots in between the two cities? do you know any good place to visit/stop/eat/party in the middle of the trip? I´d be travelling with a friend, so I´m not interested in romantic stuff :D

Re: some trip advice?

Drive north from San Fran! LA sucks. All the lovely red wood forests are north.

But its your trip with a 'friend' so do what you please.

Re: some trip advice?

Awesome! May is a good time to visit, it shouldn't be too hot. If you have extra time and want to have a more scenic view, you could take highway 1 along the coast (part of the way or the whole way down), it's more interesting than highway 5 (which goes through farmland). If you're into nature/outdoors/hiking, you could check out Big Basin Redwoods state park. It has very tall redwoods which are pretty cool to see.

This is a detour from the drive, but if you have time you may want to check out Yosemite. It's the most famous national park in California. It's really beautiful there. Great for hiking and the outdoors.

For towns along the way, I would check out Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara. Both are nice coastal, beach towns. I'd also consider going down to San Diego from LA, it's 2 additional hours. Depends on how long you're spending in California though.

Re: some trip advice?

Highway 1 is a must. Stop in Big Sur. The drive alone is a destination. Amazing scenery.

Re: some trip advice?

I always said if there would be one place that I'd choose to live in the US ... that would be San Francisco. Amazing and beautiful.

Re: some trip advice?

Skip LA unless you have a lot of money to stay at the nicest hotels and just basically chill out and go out and night. that's all it's good for, and you have to really be into shopping and going out and dressing well. Otherwise you'll find it douchy and smog infested. Oh and rent a nice car too.

I was just in San Fran, it's a fun city with a lot to do. Will pm you later with options.

Re: some trip advice?

thanks for all the replys!!!!!!! I have to say: I don't want to go to LA, but my friend does; but I'll send this info right now :D Yosemite park for sure! Redwood forests would be nice. I'll see what I can negotiate... but he didn't like Miami, so he won't like LA too. thank you, very much, really! any jazz club at SF?

Re: some trip advice?

Yeah I find San Francisco fun, eclectic, and charming. I've only been to Los Angeles a few times but I don't really like it there. Too much smog and traffic. And I would agree with florida that people tend to be more douchey and superficial there. I just go there for the music scene, which is pretty diverse and attracts big names.

Re: some trip advice?

Check to see who is performing at The Mayan in LA.

Drive around Venice Beach, drive up in the hills in Malibu. Lake Arrowhead is a nice scenic destination, probably to far away though. I'm sure there are good jazz clubs in la. I only know of them in San Diego personally. Check what concert tours are in LA too.

Re: some trip advice?

If you're a wine geek like me, there is a whole other conversation that needs to be had for this trip, because, uh, you're driving through the holy land for wine.

Re: some trip advice?

Ive actually only been to the Mayan to see Digweed, none of the other DJs I like to see stop by there. Tons of nightclubs in LA though with lots of good music. :)

Make sure you don't end up at a Lucha Libre night at the Mayan by accident though. ;)
