was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
Wow, well it's been over 2 decades. Long time coming I guess!
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
Amy from headrushmusic posted a couple of very interesting articles in the 'How was WMC' thread. Give them a read, part of it discusses the rehashing of 80s pop songs.
pump up the jam 8)
I?m sorry, but I didn?t like that song back then and I even like it less now. I agree, it?s a classic, but I think it?s a bit sad when one of the "big tunes" of WMC is a remix of a 15 year old track that wasn?t very good to start with.
And I must say the same about playing Kevin Saunderson?s "Good Life". Now, this track I loved since day 1, but once again, is house music really so stale that Deep Dish needed to play this for such a short set?
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
i liked both the tracks ..the good life mix is really good.. the pump up the jam mix is a feel good track IMO ... at space ali dropped a massive soft cell remix, cant recall the name of the original, but the track was pounding..
there are good and bad remixes, then there are djs that only play remixes..
the conference was dominated by acid and electro clash, some electro also .. not big into any of those genres. back in the day i used to live acid house (89-91) but it sounded a lot diferent back then (acid/hip house)
BTW in 1990 i saw technotronic in concert  ...maybe thats why i like that song so much
Electroclash is a contemporary music genre that fuses new wave, punk, & electronic dance music. The movement combines this 1980s sound (using synthesizers, drum machines, etc) with visuals from the post-1970s Westwood & Warhol fashion/art scenes. It mainly developed in the mid to late 1990s in New York City and Detroit.
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
danny howells and lee buridge threw an 80's party
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
Yeah, people in Portugal are going pretty crazy over this "Electroclash" stuff. I?m not going to diss the whole acid/electro sound, because I do like some of it.
I mean, Zabiela?s "Robophobia" is brilliant, that?s the acid/electro stuff done right.
But when I see people saying that that?s the future of House music, I think it?s sad. I mean, like Jenks said in another topic, is the 303 the only synth accepted in Dance music?
If people lack imagination, they at least have new technology that can help them do different stuff, create new sounds, whatever...
I don?t know...feels like a cop-out to me...
And believe me, I love 80?s music...
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
Bring it the fuck on i say. My early years of clubbing were in the mis 80`s so these remixes that keep coming out really strike a cord with me. I saw Morillo last year at a club in Liverpool, he played HUMAN LEAGUE ? Dont You Want Me the original mix, man the place went ballistic and i shot my load.
Yeh man, bring it on.
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
one song that stands out out of all the 80's madness ..was a song that had the synth of that 1987-88 desiderio latino song that was later remixed by nightclub and was called french kiss.. well anyway roger sanchez played it and so did sander... i think i like the remixes best when they have little hints of the original, thats when it really brings you back because you're not expecting it

Look, I love Human League, I love Depeche Mode, I love Duran Duran (I?m gonna see them live in 1 month?s time), it all strikes a chord with me too, but why the fuck are all the big records this year just remixes of 80?s stuff?
10 years ago I kept listening to people my age saying "oh, those fuckin? baby boomers they keep rehashing that 60?s and 70?s crap, why do we have to put up with this?" And here we are falling in the same exact trap...
In conclusion, I?m all for 80?s stuff, but to say that the future of House is in recycling the same fuckin? sounds, synths and melodies is just sad.
I think House music needs a huge jolt of something new...I don?t know where it?s going to come from, but I sure hope it?s not the 303 again...
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
its just the trend for this year..next year it will be something different...
hey this could help the edm scene,it could draw "average" non edm listeners who like the 80's in ..so if it does this then good... trust me i was at wmc and this is not what i wanted to hear
at wmc 2016 the big track will be remixes of nirvana and pearl jam

Yeah, I guess so.
I?ll give you this though : if I had actually gone to WMC, and was out of my skull from all the boozin?, I?d probably be pretty happy to hear those 80?s remixes. So I guess I just have to dismiss it as party music.
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
It's weird because I didn't like a lot of that stuff back then, but now when I hear a Morrisey/Depeche Mode type sample in a track I instantly love it.

Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
glad i didn't hear any of this nonsense. again, minimal, bangin, glitchy...techno. cheese free.
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
Be glad. The very few WMC set that I have heard. All seem to have a least one shitty remix of a bad 80's song. Make the nonsense stop.
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
it appears i went to a completely different WMC than the majority of the people on MS.

That was also what I was trying to say...I hated Duran Duran and now I love them, go figure...that doesn?t mean I want to hear everyone and their uncle doing remixes of their tracks.

Too late, I'm already working on a prog mix of "Hungry Like the Wolf"
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
Ok, here's my thing with the '80s stuff:
I don't know about you all, but part of the reason I became so enamored with independent artists and underground electronic music was because it provided a fresh alternative to what was pop music in the '80s and carried out on commercial radio. I wanted to get AWAY from it. Now, it's here. Run back underground, QUICK!
Some have defended it to me: "there's nothing wrong with rehashing and bootlegging because that's how house started. AND, it give something more accessible for audiences to latch onto, and it can be a gateway to more underground stuff." Ok, points taken, sort of. BUT, I don't see any more mainstream people getting into dance music as a result of our becoming more "accessible," because those people are all into 'in da club' and britney spears and whoever else. It might be attracting young people in their late teens and early twenties who missed the New Orders and Duran Durans and Frankie Goes to Hollywoods the first time around, but to those of us old-timers in our thirties that got OD'd on them the first time around, it's not fresh, and it's certainly not creatively stimulating...
As a side note, I'd rather hear DJs start rehashing old anthems and classics. You'd be surprised how many new kids have never heard "Flaming June" for example.

i'm 30 in about 30 days...BRING IT ON!
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
I wanna see someone do a remix of Adam and the Ants - Stand and Deliver.
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
why dont you do it??
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
I don't think WMC '05 was a regurgitation of the 80s. Seems like 80's remixes have been coming out regularly for the last couple of years.
I would venture to say that "Pump Up the Jam" might be called the song of the conference because that's one of the few songs played that everyone knows. I heard lots of songs that I enjoyed much more than "Pump Up The Jam", but have no idea who the artist was.
I'm old like some of you(33 y/o) and still listen to my 80s sounds. Sirius' First Wave channel is enjoyable. I personally don't care for the 80s remixes except a few. I enjoy the original sounds better.
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
i didn't hear pump up the jam at all @ conference. woot. :P

well yeah and theres been nirvana remixes out for the las 5 years.. just like pump up the jam has been done a bunch of times before...
just meant that in ten years it will be 20 years since those songs were out and it seems that every 20 years decades rehash themselves ..you cunt!!
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?

Decades don't rehash themselves, people rehash them. A little self-control and selectivity would cure the ill, I think.
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
hehehe true that
Re: was this years WMC a regugitation of the 80s?
This 80s wave has happend not only in house music, mainstream people are listening to old original 80s songs. :Gay: There is 80s nights here where I live in the best club and all the beautifull ladies go to that night. I was spinning to this crowd weeks ago and they were askin for 80s tracks all the time. Then I pulled this danny howells remix of "ring my bell" and it seemed to work, spun also some duran duran.. but other people started asking comercial hip hop, then I just stoped playing and let them play the music they wanted.
The truth is that the 80s are back, not only in music, but in fashion and haircuts too :P Remixes of 80s tracks are valid IMO, some of them are great, but others are shitty. This Technotronic rmx I still can't decide if I like it, Im still deciding if I will play it on my next gig. When I was a kid I bought the original vinyl, i used to love it.

Amen. 80's pop music was crap then and still crap now.
Don't give in to the fashion fads of pop culture.
