Just saw on the news that southern and eastern Ontario will also be experiencing the effects of hurricane Sandy. Stocking up on water, candles and beer. I wish everyone who path she crosses to be safe!

Hurricane Sandy
Re: Hurricane Sandy
How far from the coast do you live?
Re: Hurricane Sandy
About 1.5 km from the coast of lake Ontario. : ) We'll be experiencing high winds and massive amounts of rain. The power tends to go out often in Toronto during intense storms.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
NY trains stop operating at 7 today. I'm suppose to leave for Iceland tomorrow night :(

Iceland? That seems amazing, have you been before? Take pics like you did in Hong Kong (I think it was Hong Kong)
(maybe start a new thread about it)

Re: Hurricane Sandy
Never, always wanted to go, such a stark and beautiful place. Airwaves is on and Sigur Ros will be closing the festival. Will definitely be taking pics!
Re: Hurricane Sandy
I was on vacation in Cancun back in 2005 when Hurricane Wilma hit. I was stranded in a shelter for 6 days cause of this hurricane. It started as a tropical storm then moved to a category 1 hurricane and then escalated to a category 5.
I live in New Jersey and I'm 10 miles away from the shore area. I'd be lying if I said i'm not worried but at the same time considering what i went through the 1st time around with Hurricane Wilma and what happened lat year with Hurricane Irene, this should be a cake walk for me
Re: Hurricane Sandy
i live about a quarter mile from the north shore of long island and its alreaady pretty fucking bad.. areas around us have lost power.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
Y'all hunker down and be careful, even category 1's can get really bad.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
My flight to the east coast got cancelled, I get to spend a couple of days more days with Family. Hopefully it's calmer on Tuesday when we're back.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
To those of the Eastern coast take care, be safe, and pucker up to a good book.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Re: Hurricane Sandy
stay safe everyone.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
Wow! Poor NYC. The news this morning is showing all of the flooding and destruction. We got off easy here with the usual downed trees and power outages!
Re: Hurricane Sandy
Yesterday I heard there were over 800k power outages in NY.... hope it was restored :(.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
whoever did was likely in a helicopter
good observation
Re: Hurricane Sandy
hope everyone on here in the area is safe from the storm's grip!
Re: Hurricane Sandy
I hope this doesn't come across as insensitive, but given the damage should I postpone my trip? Should arrive on 23rd November.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
^Not jaded at all mate. I'd say postponing your trip to Nov 23rd may be advisable. Could you replace your tickets etc at little to no cost?

My trip is already scheduled for 23rd of November. Do I need to postpone beyond this?
Not sure what is involved and whether I can do this, but need to make a call.
Thoughts?
Re: Hurricane Sandy
Oh, if you're trip isn't until the 23rd I personally think you will be ok. "the slightless" will have a better more accurate answer for you. I could also ask my college roommate who's from there as well.

I certainly hope so. My work colleague has a cousin in NYC who has just told her the city is underwater, so I'm kind of freaking out. Probably too soon to say, but I just hope I'm not walking into a "war zone".
I feel like a selfish douche bag talking about this, but been planning and saving for this for a long time.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
^You live on the other side of the globe, you are just being a smart traveller. I think a month will be enough time for the parts of the city you will be visiting to be ready, but I could be wrong.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
u will be alright, it wont be like it was, but it wont be a war zone either.....
Re: Hurricane Sandy
Yep...you should be good to go. Don't go changing you ticket.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
Still can't get a hold of my friend's mom who lives in Queens :(
Phone reception has been poor.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
Thanks for the advice guys. Good luck to everyone and stay safe!
Re: Hurricane Sandy
i would read the local paper's websites. there is no true blue estimation of when the damage will be repaired in the NYC subways and power restoration to lower manhatten. i just power back about 3 hours ago. best sites to see whats going on now are
nydailynews nypost newsday(more long island centric, which also has been devastated.)
not sure on jersey side.
its real bad in terms of damage and cleanup. my friends house has cars and boats on the property, my old neighbor lost thier home and my friend's better half has family who lost everything down in breezy point. the ocean or olong island sound met the bays in a few areas. coastline has changed a bit on southern nassau county (long beach NY and oak beach). my wifes cousins are still trapped on a barrier island called oak beach but ok.
Re: Hurricane Sandy
I've been trough 4 of these in Florida, and.. non of them did as much damage. http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2012/10/hurricane_sandy_the_superstorm.html
Re: Hurricane Sandy
^ some pretty amazing photos in there. Didn't realise the extent of the damage..
Electrical fires @ Breezy Point? Wasn't expecting to see fire damage.
