UK and Australia was a 2 disc release (1996), whereas the US was a single disc release i.e. North disc only (1997)
So, there are three or four comp. of this series ?? I'm a little confused
Just 3 I think, Northern Exposure 1 (North and South), Northern Exposure 2 (East Coast and West Coast), and Northern Exposure Expeditions.

Definitely some of my favorite mixes, they're all fantastic. :D

Then they did Comminicate, no continuity with the series.

<3'd Communicate.. my first DJ Compilation I purchased after the Hackers soundtrack... didn't really like it at the time, shelved it, then came back to it years later.. still one of my favorite Compilations.

ah. well, listened to South last night and while it's phenomenal it's not even close to how awesome North is.

probably the weakest of the north/south/east/west series.

Re: Northern Exposure Vol One

0° North is so great and special that nothing can really replicate it.

Re: Northern Exposure Vol One

The first time I listened to North was on a Greek beach. Magic. Last Train to Lhasa is stunning.

remember waiting the post to deliver the unmixed version and spending hours in the basement trying to copy the transitions.....you can imagine my failure!

Actually, I've always wondered how mixes from that era were put together. There wasn't any sync buttons back then and digital audio was pretty rudimentary.

Were they doing the DJ mix off tape into a mixing board? Not that a good engineer couldn't work it over pretty well, but it just doesn't sound like a vinyl mix recording...

Re: Northern Exposure Vol One

Back in the 90s this was the object of ENDLESS debating in Newgroups and BBSes. That's how the expression "Pro-tooled to death" was created :). It's annoying but it'll never go away.

A Google search will be more useful, but my opinion is that back then this (the use of musical software to obtain layering and a more than perfect flow) was regarded by people like S&D, May, Muir etc. as state-of-the art if not pushing the envelope.

For years it was opinion that such effects were impossible to replicate by a human. But legend has it that Charlie May once proved them (S&D) that it could be done.

I think the sets were entirely programmed and played live by the two men but the cds themselves were probably studio re-creations, much like the GU records.
