Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
Not exactly the classic form of deep house, but deep house/nu disco/indie dance type of tracks are really biggest at the moment and labels like Hot Creations,Visionquest etc..I am really happy with that to be honest, couse its some kind of a return to the roots and i think the producers of electronic music have made a full circle in their artistic approaches at last and that everythin can start all over ..again =)
My kind of a DEEP track :

Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
A lot of the tunes I would call 'laid back progressive' are listed as deep house though.
There was a thread on Bedrock asking if Deep House was the new big thing.
I posted this list of some of my favourite Deep tunes of the last year or so and get the reply that none of them are deep house....

Who ????
Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
Deep house used to be called garage, but garage became house, and then house became tech and progressive and deep, and now we are getting back to where it all was 20 years ago. I swear I could play a couple of mix tapes from 1992 that would pass today in a club as deep house.
Todays deep house is just slowed down progressive some of which have a few soulful vocals or basslines in them, which is back to early house, or garage.....that is garage before garage changed of course......oh fuck it, where are my new romantic cds I've had enoug of all this!!

Interesting point, in all your comment, but I do not think that the "deep house" is the "progressive" of our days, but slower. every genre has its qualities in addition to the bpm.
Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
I always label my sets 'Deep Progressive House' these days as I really don't know what to call them.
I guess Deep House to me is almost rare groove, in the early days deep house was called garage over here, and the Nothern Soul guys were playing it, the dance scene was acid and hardcore, so when you heard something funky with vocals and an almost Motown groove going on it was classed as deep. The house sound to me was defined by a very obvious 4 4 beat, with influences from all the genres blended in, it then obviously drifted with the Deep House sound, Tech sounds, electro house sounds and of course the Prog sounds with labels like Guerilla and Perfecto putting out some Epics.
Right now I guess we are just combining it all again, and to be fair the deep funky stuff with vocals is always going to do well as it puts a smile on peoples faces. I know if I played a set with stuff from Maceo it would appeal to more people than a set playing Maetrik tracks, in the same way I would probably dare walk into a club I don't know and play Crosstown Rebels tunes only and expect to do OK, where as just playing Bedrock tunes is going to be dodgy, a few who are really into it will love it, many will just look a bit puzzled.
Deep house is also going to appeal to an older crowd, problem with the stuff the youngsters are listening to most people would think it is shit. I know many of the 40+ guys couldn't get the stuff we were listening to in '89-'91 but then they were all on amphetamines while we were taking ridiculous amounts of mdma, and it is because of that the music worked.
Also, the production of house has got so good that deep now really works. A few of my mates, and their partners, are enjoying some of the stuff I am playing now because it is deep, girls in particular love it, it is like a cross between house and swing, and they can dance to it, and I mean properly dance, not heads down and let's go!! ;)
Deep will be hear for a while, because let's face it, it makes you feel pretty good.
Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
DJ Fail too now plays "Deep House" sets and look at his results.

good stuff - interesting accounts there, thanks!
Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
I have just looked through my sets over the last 3 years, I have 103 sets, and only one is what I would class as Deep House. Lots of them are using tracks now labeled on Beatport as Deep, and I guess they are to people who are into Techno, but as I said only one of those sets is what I would call Deep, and I did that for my wife for Christmas a couple of years ago as she was always moaning that I never play music that she likes, Now, to be fair she does like a lot of the stuff I play, but she meant I never buy something thinking "I will get this as I know Fiona will love it."
I will upload it somewhere and you can tell me if you class it as Deep.
Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
Beatport hasnt any idea how to classify the music. I think they are a bit confused.

Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
The best sets contain a little bit of everything but the deeper housier sound is definately becoming more popular again.
I knew everyone would see sense soon!
Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
I think another reason it is getting more popular is because it is getting a bit more underground sounding again.
There is a real surge of deep tunes at the moment that are not cheesy, it is pretty hard to do deep, melodic stuff and keep the cheese out, there is a very fine line, but at the moment with people like Maetrik doing deep, along with Whebba, Scuba, Sasha and a fair bit on Bedrock as well, it starts to appeal to a different crowd.......us lot.

I agree there mate, more underground feeling which in turn is creating a more underground scene again. Well it seems to be here in Scotland, maybe even through-out the UK.
Seems to be loads of small intimate nights booking really good DJ's to play the more underground venues.
I went to see Hot Since 82 a couple of weeks ago in a small club, great night! What proper clubbing is all about! 8)
Re: Has Deep House Taken Over?
