Sharing sets: A modest proposal

From another thread:

There isn't a SINGLE file hoster who's 100% reliable these days, personally I don't need to pay extra money to share sets when Dropbox and Soundcloud are available but people here are too lazy to bother. Simple solution: buy a SoundCloud Pro for MS or create an MS Dropbox with extra space.

It would cost a few dollars each month, if the contributors are more than just a dozens, then it'd be just a few cents.

I could even expand my own Soundcloud Pro, I'd pay 30, it would only take 20 EURO A MONTH TO BUY UNLIMITED DISK SPACE.

100+ users contribute 240 eu per year, you do the math, almost free.

After the tee-shirts fiasco, countless botched deals, countless examples of people not delivering the goods and other accidents in my career as a commercial site's owner, my hopes are not high.

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

why not everyone go back to soulseek???

#1602274Post 3 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

I'm up for getting a Dropbox Pro account, I love the service.... I used to love soulseek, not a lot of peeps using it though.

Lets brainstorm guys...we should definitely be able to get a [ms] shared group started.

People here don't join my SC or FB, which are full of mixes for FREE.

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

Soundcloud Pro would be a pretty kick ass idea. How do you keep everything organized though without it getting to be a huge mess?

#1602295Post 7 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

Actually you need the Pro Plus account for unlimited uploads which is 59 EUR a month: http://soundcloud.com/premium?ref=top

#1602298Post 8 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

Yes, Pro is what I have now.

"Sets" is the only way to organize stuff under categories.

500 a year would have been a no brainer two years ago, now I'm more than broke, I'm bankrupt and starving.

lol

Good idea imo

What's your name on there, I'll follow you. Nightmare finding people on SC I find.

#1602364Post 13 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

the problem with paying for SC is you still don't control it. if/when they decide to clean up that site, bye-bye sets!

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

I speak for myself and my accounts: very far-fetched, they have strict filters for major labels (even if it's indie labels under distribution) and selected house tracks, you find the same at Beatport, in other forms. If they do extend the limitations, I still have space I can use for music. (I love your avatar tidz, let's throw a sax man party!!!).

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

If everyone could agree to use one service, I'd be happy to pay for my own unlimited downloads, I just can't afford to pay for premium memberships at 10 different downloading sites.

#1602637Post 16 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

If I close my "sbando" account, saving here and there I might upgrade to plus.

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

i bet your could make a ubot that regs new sound cloud accounts, uploads your sets and then posts the links back to some database for everyone to use. :Naughty:automation

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

What about using torrents? As long as people seed what would be the issues?

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

if someone secures the funding, I can get dedicated server with over 2 TB HD and set it up as a sharing FTP, upload and download only, no deletion rights. it might not be cheap but it will be a dedicated option for those looking for a reliable place to share sets.

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

What about Amazon AWS

#1606079Post 23 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

FTP would be cool and a lot cheaper, there could be an uploads dir that is write only that no one could read, but then the few who have superuser perms would have to move sets around a lot and keep up with cleaning /incoming. Also there is the problem of once the read only passwd/userid gets out then anyone could get to the ftp site and suck down everything or new users can get that and download whatever w/o the 50 post limit etc.
What about Amazon AWS
I love aws (obviously) and thats where I have some of my stuff backed up but the problem is it gets expensive. Since it is basically a REST service there isn't a great GUI interface for it, and FTP doesn't work, as most of the S3 storage stuff is made to be done via the commandline or CloudBerry explorer type GUIs, which aren't very common for normal non nerds. Plus the storage is right now .09c a GB and if you want 1 TB of stuff stored it is going to cost ~ $100/month not including data outbound charges.

maybe setup a megaupload type application once again that is only for ms users?

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

It would be cool to write a [ms] dropbox integration that identified when a member upload sets to their dropbox account and automatically posts links to them in P&R on your behalf. It's realistic, but I'm not sure how many members would use it. My only concern is that the files would disappear quickly as there's only a 5gb limit, leaving a thread remaining with no content to grab

#1609444Post 31 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

Same as today with Megaupload then :). I think your Dropbox (or the new Google equivalent) integration could solve the day to day operations, people requires working links. As for the long haul, I think Dropbox offers REMOTE UPLOAD as an option, or fxp.

At present, Russian hosters rule the warez world. They may be gone later today. But Rapidshare is back on track, for instance. FileFactory that Chris is using (+traffic share) seems to be working great.

Mediafire

#1609448Post 33 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

I always liked Mediafire.

#1609450Post 34 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

Yes, my first option, Pro offers traffic share (no waits). Ideal would be a cloud (DP and similar) for easy linking (the cloud would be the ms hard-drive), then remote upload to mediafire for storing.

#1609482Post 35 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

Given the volume P&R sees, I'm skeptical if any cloud service can handle our shares without costs becoming exorbitant?

#1609485Post 36 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

No, the hoster would provide the disk space, 1 Pro account with Share and remote upload.

A dropbox on your pc with standard diskspace (free) for short-term linkage by the users (no $ spent).

Then a mod or a script if possible would create a permalink on Media, File Factory, RS. I don't know if drpbox is still synched with hosters, like it used to do with FileSonic.

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

Mediafire is no longer suitability for long term

#1609489Post 38 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal
Mediafire is no longer suitability for long term
why not? I have a few cattaneo links I posted almost 2 years ago that are still active on there. Granted stuff that isn't downloaded for months will expire, but who cares if it isn't that popular someone else here can just reup it if a request comes in. Mediafire is my fav file locker svc since it is the quickest for me and doesn't have annoying ads and wait times. But they could get shutdown anytime too...

#1609496Post 39 of 60

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal

Oh, Jebus. Pro account: no expiration.

Everything must pass, a meteor hits us, we're not even history, everything ends.

You MAKE me agree with Adam, nothing will happen out of this, two or three people (including us two) max.

Anyway, next month I'll go Soundcloud Pro Plus, for EWTBTDJ, The Raccoon Boy, Transitions AND [MS].

Anyone who will support me even with 5$ donations, will have access to it, direct or indirect. Friends (Si, Garry, Hoff, ETC) who also posts sets, are in. House DJs, Alex, Ribs, Juice et everybody else, with no longer have to deal with account restriction and lose sets.

Different material can be ordered as "Sets".

Re: Sharing sets: A modest proposal
Mediafire is no longer suitability for long term
Why do you say that. ??? Mediafire are innovating all the time, in fact I think they are doing the things suggested on this thread. Check out their blog . I have had some dealings with them recently and they have been amazingly good.!! They are probably more careful than most about illegal stuff, but I like that! Even when I suffer for it  They do have a mechanism to fight specious claims of copyright infringement. No file sharing site is going to be perfect, but Mediafire sure try hard

I have links there that I put up when I joined them just after they started up. If you have a pro account , the only time they will remove stuff is if there is a complaint , and they keep you informed. I think they are wonderful !! :D

Just checked I joined the same month they started up  October 2006. They have come a long way since then :)
