What are you views about Drugs?

No seriously.

As this is an EDM forum, you would think most people would have come across/experienced etc. on this issue.

The reason why I'm interested all of a sudden is a friend of mine is conducting a research through our university on trialing an ecstasy check up sessions with subsequent users.

Check it out here.

The trial aims to assist the individual to minimise consumption through a psychological basis, which honestly can't seem to think how that would work. That's all the info that was said so far as it's all hush-hush.

It's not such a tabooed subject as it once was, and I can definitely say that the average user is becoming younger in age.

Personally I've experimented here or there. but never really got into anything majorly. Apart from the occasional I joint to help relax, write and deal with the Mrs. But really never really found an amusement for the myriad of things available out there.

I always found it amusing to think of how governments deal with this issue.

So what are your thoughts?

There are pro's and con's. I know a guy who did a lot and suffered a lot. I know a guy who did a little and seemed to benefit. I know a guy who didn't do any and probably could use some .

Re: What are you views about Drugs?

I've dabbled ... and had some amazing, amazing, amazing, drug-fuelled nights over many years ... plus some nights, where the chase of the drug & that high has made things a 'meh' night. All things in moderation and please be sensible-ish.

The amazing nights on the (cough) less-legal substances with friends will live with our group forever ... the flipside ? Some friends have been lost forever to this mortal coil through dugs (RIP) ... it gives me a sense of perspective :(

These days its pretty much a few drinks only - in many respects its makes me closer to the music - the shit stuff sounds worse (lol), hence why I just go out to see quality DJs playing the music that expands my musical horizons and the reduced fucked-up-ed-ness makes me appreciate the craft and music more :)

My advice ? Life is there for living & appreciation .....

Approach with caution, quality counts, enjoy yourself, but dont (FFS) abdicate common sense & responsibility :P

Re: What are you views about Drugs?

I honestly feel that when it comes to drugs to each their own. What Simon said is actually much the same way I feel kind of. Personally I pop a painkiller if it's available and have a beer or shots and then ride the high. It isn't something that controls my life though. If someone said I'd never be able to recreationally use painkillers again, I wouldn't contemplate suicide.

I've had friends addicted to the harder stuff that when they finally got off they look back and the days and nights are filled with regret. I have a friend who loves golf and is damn good at it and while they were on drugs sold their golf clubs for $400 to get high. Mind you they cost over 3 grand. Another friend had to leave the state to get off and away from them and I haven't hear from them since. Honestly drugs took 2 great friends of mine and really haven't given them back.

As weird as this sounds after that information, if someone wants to experiment, go for it. Make sure it's in an environment they feel safe in and with people who will care if something goes wrong. However I will always ALWAYS draw the line on drug usage (including alcohol) when it takes over who you are.

I also feel that when it comes to drugs and their usage parents, siblings and government (tread lightly with that one) should educate better rather than bring down the iron hammer. I feel that alcohol abuse in any country outside of America is so low because of the education that parents and society give to their adolescents. Here in America it's 21 or jail and rarely do you hear of parents who teach responsibilty over abstaining.

When I finally have kids, I'd like to think that I'll be able to educate them into being responsible while at the same time still being a parent. That however is what makes parenting so difficult.

Re: What are you views about Drugs?

In my opinion there's nothing wrong with drugs when you use it wise and for fun a few times a year. In my opinion there's something wrong with the government. I mean: you can drink every weekend, but when you smoke some pot they say you have serious problems? C'mon. open your eyes.

Re: What are you views about Drugs?

For some reason I have simply never had the urge to try any kind of drug such as weed, ecstasy, cocaine, heroin, MDMA etc. I dunno why - I'm not scared to try it, but I really do think I never will. Maybe it's a fear of getting 'addicted', who knows. For me, going out to a major club is the 'high' for me - any time I went to Bedrock years ago I was always so excited just to be out of Luton and listening to a proper DJ that I have never needed to enhance that experience. As I get older the nights out are few and far between, but the thrill is still there when I do venture out.

Bizarrely, my close circle of friends are all the same as me - never tried it, dont seem to want to try it. That is strange in so far that we havent ever explicitly talked about it and why we don't do it - we just seem to be a group of people that dont do it.

Alcohol is enough for me, but even that is taken in moderation. I worked in a drug and alcohol addiction clinic and saw first hand how alcohol ruins lives.

Blimey, I sound like a boring b****ard :)

Re: What are you views about Drugs?

Never really got heavily into anything other than the reefer. Sure I've done a bit of other drugs, but never for an extended period of time, and never anything too serious. Only randomly during my rave til dawn days and now only the occasional night out with with close friends. Shhhh.... don't tell my wife.

I've seen 3 of my very close childhood friends die from overdosing on cocktails of drugs, and many others I wasn't so "close" to. I remember a few of them used to get crystal (glass) and hoard themselves in hotel rooms for days until they were literally hallucinating from of lack of sleep. Seriously, army men where outside in the trees spying on them. Other times, I witnessed them get so totally engulfed in coke, that they just weren't the same guys I knew. They would do anything, including fighting each other just to snort another line. Witnessing these behaviors first hand, I always knew I never wanted any sort of drug, whether it be prescription or recreational to control my being. I somehow kept my distance even though it was everywhere around me.

Now I enjoy good bourbon on the rocks and I'll hit the reefer from time to time, although my wife doesn't "allow" it in the house. So I keep it in the garage.

Re: What are you views about Drugs?

I spent from '89 through to about '94 off my fuckin' busicuit, however, I suddenly got bored of it all.

Don't get me wrong, I still did something most weekends, but things changed and I started to get into other things, like Sunday mornings and boring shit like that.

I do have a very addictive nature, but I also realise this and that helped me walk away from certain situations. Unlike some friends who thought they were totally in control and didn't say 'No'. Watched them get more and more into their gear and eventually went to their funerals.

Drugs are fine if you are the sort of person who can use them to make the night better, but too many people use them to try and make their life better, and that is always going to end in tears.

I know what you mean..although I think when used very moderately they can be cathartic to ones life... I can't explain why but I honestly believe they can benefit ones life. That's probably not normal, I'm sure they wreck more lives than help.

Re: What are you views about Drugs?

Mankind has the propensity to fuck itself up on anything it lays its hands on, drugs being just one or the least of it.

My experiences with drugs have been recreational and mostly benign with the bad trips here and there. But even with the bad, I've come away taking onboard lessons, so on the whole I've found drugs to be reflective and conducive to who I am now. Of course having the best friends is an undeniable contribution.

At the same time, I'm quite an emotional and neurotic person even before drugs, and I'm pretty sure the worst times I've gone through, those have been exacerbated because of the drugs (well, duh). I have to also wonder if my lousy short term memory is due to the drugs or simple age.

But in the end I survived the drug years to walk away, I'm actually very functional and good at what I do at work (but the possibly drug-enhanced neurosis and insecurity is still there!) and as with life experiences, these have given me different perspectives.

Interestingly enough the last time I was amongst an afterparty binge, I held back on partaking thinking I'd rather spend the day with my girlfriend then than waste it comatose in bed. It was a very interesting shift in priorities for me and I assumed those days are finally running its course and age is moving me on to other stuff in life.

I'm also a proponent of education and minimisation and gave my brother his first pill. He explored it and other stuff for a bit but have since moved on as well.

So out of all this. I think drugs are a stage in life if you're so inclined, worth exploring, can be bad or good, and I'd do it all again!

The more worrying problems are alcohol and smoking!

Re: What are you views about Drugs?

Is this question a repost from the 15 other times someone has requested views on drug use which always results in someone being too pro or anti against drug, backlash ensues, then followed with up threads regarding how big of a douche Tiesto is as a DJ, and musings of hazy weekends since past mock DJing over toilet seat covers while on acid in the Men's loo. All I know is that DRUGS ARE HABIT FORMING, just a matter of whether drugs are a habit to the individual worth considering and the older I get the longer it takes to recover.
