13 bucks per duck? Damn. I paid 8 for 8 oz of duck fat. how much fat did you end up with?
Also, is it your belief that store-bought duck fat is no good? or is it just that it's more fun to spend the time doing it the old-timey way (which i AM into doing btw.)
Store bought is fine, it's just hella expensive, especially when you can do it yourself, end up with about 2 cups of duck fat, plus two duck breasts, two duck leg quarters, wings, pieces, cracklins etc...all for $13.

i recommend practicing some reading comprehension :p im not arguing that humans were vegans, and i never said we were vegans. i'm saying we're not "born to be carnovores" and our bodies are designed to digest a plant based diet, not a meat based one. Anthropology/Science > Tasty Rib Eye.

Re: Carnivore, Pescatarian, Vegetarian or Vegan?
I think the problem comes from our planet's population growth, we just passed the 7 billion mark: http://www.worldometers.info/
How is the food industry supposed to keep up with demand ? Its easy to say "they don't care, and they treat the animals bad" but then again, none of the people saying that, have any ideas on how to provide meet to the growing demand, and at the same time, treat the animals better and so on. I know, its all profit based and that changes things, but.. a lot of other industries are based on the same general principle.
I had a steak last night, and it was amazing.. it probably happens once a month, but I do enjoy it.
And .. okay, i will say it, without meet, we won't even be able to talk about all of this right now. Its an essential part of our evolution as a species

Sigh... no it isn't. I'd like to see you expand on this though: "meat is an essential part of our evolution as a species," with, ya know, facts and science and stuff. Kthx.

Prof. John Hawks has a really cool lectures series on the subject, called Rise Of Humans. I uploaded the first 5 episodes of the series in a zip file for you. If you have the time, listen to episodes:
Brain Structure Versus Brain Size and also The Dietary Hypothesis ...
download:
http://www.mediafire.com/?s4ywqychky98g9f
And I could ask you the same .. there is no concrete evidence to support both claims. But i think that protein/amino acids were essential to brain development, and I don't think we were getting it from quinoa or soy beans..
here is how all the files should look like, when unzipped.. if you are interested in the rest, let me know and I will upload them as well :)

There may not be concrete evidence on the basis of evolution, but there is most certainly concrete evidence that the modern day human doesn't need meat for development/life/etc.
Interesting stuff from Hawks, I'm not saying we're carnivors or vegetarians, (more realistically we're ABLE to be mixed feeders) - im arguing that our bodoies are better equipped and thrive eating plants vs. meats, and this notion that a so many people believe that humans need meat for evolution/survivial/born to eat meat, etc is silly and actually dangerous.
We can definitely get all the proteins and amono acids from plants and not meats. I do so on a weekly basis, and train heavily 5 days a week. Protein is protein, amino acids are amino acids- where they come from doesn't necessarily matter. What does matter 1. our bodies ability to extract these nutrients from the source, and 2. the excess proteins, sat fats, bad cholesterol etc in meats that our bodies have difficulty with which doesn't exist in a plant based diet. It's not an anomoly that vegetarians have an almost half as much of a chance of death from heart disease, kidney disease, prostate and colon cancer, diabietes than meat eaters do.
I could write on this for days, as i've just spent the last 4 months buried in fitness and nutrition books, but i'm likely not solving any of humanity's dietary issues rambling mercuyserver, so i'll save the time. lol. It's frustrating to me that the commercial food industry has brainwashed so many Americans into believing what is beneficial for their products, and even more frustrating that our government encourages it to happen. Don't even get me started on milk.
I could pull up study after study on nutrition that i've read, but a simple google search will do you the same if you're so inclined on meat vs. plant based diet.
That said, it's friday night, and i'm probably picking up a local grassfed hanger steak on my way home to go on the grill. It's been a couple of weeks, and i'm drooling to have one with a nice bottle of wine.
I'm not advocating being a strict vegetarian, and i'm definitely not rallying with the fucking overboard PETA people, im just saying eat less goddamn meat, it's killing you. ;)

Re: Carnivore, Pescatarian, Vegetarian or Vegan?
I love meat... usually closer to rare then medium rare. I love fish too though, sushi especially... Chicken I'm okay with but it's bland sometimes unless I spice the hell out of it... and love veggies too, nothing like a mondo fresh salad... oh and Cheese... LOVE cheese..
I guess I'm an all around food person. lol Long as the portions are controlled and I don't overdo it in any one area I'm good. Try to eat healthy though that is sometiems hard to do on a very tight budget. I try to cook all my meals at home, and use leftovers for lunch the next day.
Every now and then though I'm just DYING for some grease though and have to go to mcd's. But that's usually like a once/month or two month thing, dno't do that often. Have tried the vegetarian route and got severely anemic and was very sickly during that time... So went back to having meat in my diet and never felt better.

Cats and Dogs are meat eaters.
What is their saliva ph?
And what is the human saliva Ph again? Oh, right there too?
Haziel is right about the corn. But me, I'm too lazy to buy organic non-corn-fed meat. . That'll probably change at some point.

Some studies suggest saturated fats from grassfed/pastured meats are good for you. I've changed my diet a bit since the beginning of this thread. I still eat a shitload of organic vegetables, mostly low glycemic vegetables and greens with small amounts of pastured meats. Removing most of the gluten from my diet has made the biggest change.

Re: Carnivore, Pescatarian, Vegetarian or Vegan?
^So you are eating more cow and bison or what? I've been eating a lot more eggs since starting this thread.. but still no meat besides fish. I just don't dig meat though, my digestive system doesn't dig meat like some peoples doesn't dig gluten. I do stay away from most foods containing gluten though. I try to stick to foods that have the fewest ingredients possible as well.
Re: Carnivore, Pescatarian, Vegetarian or Vegan?
^ I did Atkins last year high protein low carbs just before I got married - lost 10 kgs but it all back on as soon as I introduced a lot of carbs back into my eating. Busy looking at the Metabolism miracle by Diane Kress which speaks about a certain group of people having Metabolism B or insulin resistance. Very similar to Atkins just less animal fat with the food, down 3 kgs already.
Re: Carnivore, Pescatarian, Vegetarian or Vegan?
I'm a fucking Carnivore. I can't eat nothing without meat. May be few meals but if there is meat much better.

Some stores like whole foods or Trader Joes here are very specific on the content and the way of whatever you are eating is grown. The food industry became quite evil over the past 20 years lets put it this way It was much less detrimental to your health to be omnivorous back in the days than now.

Global demand has increased for quinoa, as a result the places where it is harvested naturally, the locals are facing shortages.

Really though? You really think Gluten made you tired and depressed all the time? You may very well be right, everyone is different and has different sensitiveness to things. So no more beer huh?

It all comes down to individual sensitivity, so i certainly wouldn't advocate that a celiac freely drink beer based on those findings, but it's worth a look if you're a beer nerd like me.
