Maybe not many know me or maybe a few have seen a few 'known' DJs play some tracks by me periodically, but this is a 2 hour mix I did for an online net-station. They had some difficulties and I'm not sure it was ever broadcast, so I made the mix available at my site...

It's done with Ableton. I didn't go nuts with it, but I used it mostly to really blend the tracks, and loop/edit portions, etc. There's a couple parts where I've literally got pieces of 3 separate tracks working together.

This mix probably isn't for everyone though - I tend to be a little closer to the fringe as a DJ than most would expect, but it's more fun for me that way.. ;)

You can grab it at my site ( http://www.kellyd.com ) or this direct link should also work:

http://69.72.189.151/kd/kelly_d_-_desertfm.com_07-14-04.mp3

Here's a tracklist, which is also transposed into the 'Comments' field of the MP3 tags:

 • voodoo warriors of love - imagine (em:t)

Re:: Kelly D - ableton-based mix - 14.07.04

Yeh, this is sort of one of those "love it" or "hate it" mixes, but I'm hoping the people that really don't like it will pull it out six or nine months from now and check it out again.. Dance music is so fleeting, yet there's certain aspects and attitudes that can be timeless if you're careful.. (case in point - my "snake" track that sasha played on some of his last mixes was actually composed and recorded in late 2001, shortly after 9/11, but only recently released.. my production is better since then obviously, but the composition style was actually fairly timeless..)

i really didn't push ableton to the limit in this mix.. most of what i did i could have done live, but i wanted to do some minor track editing like looping certain parts, added some filter sweeps, simple stuff like that..

i really think the future of ableton for DJing is somewhat like live re-composition of tracks - a little bit like the idea of 'closer to the edit' but done live...

incidentally, three of the tracks in this mix are from a netlabel called "thinner" that is really one of the best labels around right now, and their stuff is free at their website, http://www.thinnerism.com .. i'm not affiliated with them, i just like what they do..

#380507Post 12 of 51

Very ecclectic! I like it, little housey, little dark, little airy all in one. Nice job bro!

Listening now and I like what I hear so far, sound very smooth so far...

Excellent mix. I really enjoyed it.

Re:: Kelly D - ableton-based mix - 14.07.04

right at 55 minutes is a combination of 'freek' by the flaws (the ewan pearson mix) and 'espresso' from gabriel ananda.. most of the music is actually ananda, but i looped the little 'freek!' vocal and used it in the background for a while..

75 minutes is a combination of 'give me your disease' by hakan lidbo (which is on that '10 years of pokerflat' release) and 'flow control' by misc on sender.. the sorta housy part is the lidbo track and the one coming in with the rippy driving, techno-ish sound is the misc one.. the misc. track is playing alone by about 75:55, so you can probably tell if that's the one you mean at that point..

there's remixes of 'flow control' and the original release.. this version is the one from the original release..

that label sender is very good.. they do get a bit 'out there' at times, but it's one of my favorites right now.. holden used a jake fairley track from the sender label on his balance mix-cd..

thx to sharing kd, d/l now, comments tomorrow.

#380577Post 19 of 51

i enjoyed some of the sounds you created with this mix, but no offense...i just cant get into a mix done on ableton. i'd rather hear a dj mix on their own, flaws and all...

#380583Post 20 of 51

Re:: Kelly D - ableton-based mix - 14.07.04

No offense taken.. Music should be about choice, which is one of the ideas I try and get across.. (i.e. that's why I play a lot of things most people might not have heard..)

About Ableton though, this mix sounds pretty similar to the non-Ableton mixes I've done.. In other words, most of what I did could have been done live.. The only thing I wouldn't have been able to do if I hadn't used Ableton is some of the echos and reverb FX because I don't have external FX.. There's several older non-Ableton mixes by me floating around Emule if anybody uses it..

#380589Post 21 of 51

I absolutely love 'Moonburn' from you. Especially the remix. I find myself playing it quite often. D/Ling now. :D

It`s all about the music... and not how or where it is done.

IMO of course

#380616Post 24 of 51

agreed, as long as it sounds good and the dj doesn't try to claim he/she spun it live when it was really done on the computer.

can't wait to hear this set!

Re:: Kelly D - ableton-based mix - 14.07.04

hey hydra.. todd's always looking for new stuff for pure and the other sublabels, but i know he's been pretty interested in finding some new/unique ideas.. it's difficult nowadays to come up with something that's commercially viable in the US but still pushes the envelope, but it's worth shooting for..

and right now, i'm pretty sure he's interested in totally new names who've never put anything out (or very little), so it's a good time to send stuff again, if you haven't recently..

generally todd likes energy the most in the tracks - i mean, i love moody, deep stuff when it's done right, but todd's all about energy, so that's a good thing to keep in mind.. once in a while todd asks me what i think about a CDR someone sent, but i almost always feel kind of ambivalent about everything including my own stuff, so i'm not usually much help in that respect.. mostly, it's up to him totally..

there's a huge package coming soon with sort of an 'election-year' release of new mixes of kobbe & nitro's 'america' but aside from that there's only one or two other releases ready or almost ready, so he probably needs stuff..

a good way to break in sometimes is to either: a) try doing a bootleg of something, but make it really inventive, and not just put a house beat behind some rock song like many of them do (for instance, the erykah badu one is very good) or b) ask todd (or someone else) if you can remix something 'on spec' meaning you do the remix and you only get paid if they use the mix.. (if they don't use the mix, which will most often be the case early on, you did a lot of work and don't make anything, but you gained some valuable experience..)

hel-LO! nice looking tracklist, i'm all over this. will letcha know what i think after i give it a good listen.

Re:: Kelly D - ableton-based mix - 14.07.04

yeah man, em:t rules.. it's a treasure trove of intros and interludes and all kinds of stuff.. that lucid dreams one has some really cool ambient monologue type tracks..

i've really been into ambient for a long time, so at some point i've been toying with the idea of doing about a 4 hour mix that goes from about an hour of ambient, into laid back house, into harder dance music, all the way into techno, and then down into groovy kinda house at the end..

maybe if i'm ever well-known enough i'll do it since people will listen once they've heard of me, but being a nobody i feel a bit like people will say, "damn, a 4 hour mix from some joe schmoe? i'm not wasting bandwidth on that.. "

;)

Re:: Kelly D - ableton-based mix - 14.07.04

I neglected to post that I added an MP3 of the mix for Samer's show on Eccentricbeats.com ..

There's a link at my site.. ( http://www.kellyd.com )

This mix is just an hour long mix, so it is a bit more to the point, but 100% different..

The already infamous Holden dub of Britney is in this mix, which didn't really need more FX or manipulation but I did a little more to it anyway.. ;)

I'll post a cue file for it, if anyone wants one, since it'll fit on one CD..

It may be a while before I do another mix (a month or two) because I've gotta finish a couple remixes and my first original tracks since like two years ago..

Incidentally, if you check out the new mix, try and imagine you're in a dark, smoky, warehouse club.. There's something incredibly subliminal that is happening in that mix.. I mean - I'm kind of biased, but if you allow it to, it sorta connects into your brain in ways that may be illegal someday..
