Religion? Faith? Anything?

I just read the thread about Christopher Hitchens and realized quite a few people in here like him and his opinion. That made me curious on the topic of how the "faith is spread" between the forum users. I do not intend to break lose fanatic discussions on this topic, so please keep the strong words to yourselves or in another thread :)

Religion is way too controversial. Which is why you should read this:

That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

Great book.

Look I've had an interesting upbringing about religion. A conservative catholic whom is my mother and a liberated atheist, which can be said about my father. To sum up what i see about religion:

Pros: Enhances ones ethical and moral beliefs in an individual, this is important in young children especially. Cons: Political, and Financial disbelief The Vatican city for example. Wars. violence, abuse, degradation of women? Still a big WTF with all these issues.

Re: Religion? Faith? Anything?

I am a kind of agnostic/athiest. I dont think there is a god as there is no evidence for one, but if any convincing evidence ever came up I would be prepared to change my mind.

I find it so very interesting that Hitchens himself was fairly civil towards religious people, and took a more intellectual view of this debate, whereas the johnny-come-lately atheists are complete dickwads to anyone having the least bit of reverence for a deity.

It's amusing that this later group seems to have convinced themselves that they are intellectually superior to all others solely because they are atheist.

I can see why they are because to be religious and then turn atheist is because of what you understand a lot about reality and how the cosmos works on the whole.

pretty good points that I take to heart also.

I consider myself to be agnostic. Personally, I think it makes more sense to pay homage to the Sun, since it literally is our "God" Without it, no life on Earth would be possible. The whole part about believing in a said deity that is more human than supernatural or cosmos-related is only finding a way to make humans more Godly than we really are and taking science out of the equation. And that is what brings us to organized religion today, where humans have warped it so much as to only serve their own ideologies and people in power forcing those religious ideologies upon the rest of us either socially, politically, or through wars.

my 2 cents :)

Re: Religion? Faith? Anything?

I think it's ridiculous for any one religion to be considered the 'truth'. The amount of re-interpretations over thousands of years which have now become the official scriptures of each religion would have changed so significantly from the original message it's impossible to be entirely correct. It's just common sense.

Atheists are hypocrites. Generally their argument is "how can you prove there is a God?" Well "How can you prove there isn't?"

Agnostic or simply believing in some kind of higher being make much more sense to me.

Taking science out of the equation? Both religion and science are flawed so you cannot use either one to describe the true essence of the Universe. The laws of physics that we know today are only frameworks which we apply to real life - for practical purposes. But the equations and theories in themselves do not adequately explain the Universe.

Science and technology is great and we've come a long way, but in comparison to what is actually out there we know fuck all. We've only scratched the surface. How can we then profess to understand the origins and existence of the Universe?

When you read about current progressions in astrophysics and quantum physics, together with philosophical theories it's quite apparent how small a role we play and how much we don't understand.
