Holy sh$%^$t, I called my cable company to find out why my internet wasn't working. I thought it was a late bill perhaps. The lady says it's because of abuse and transfers me to tech sevice. I'm thinking, Oh boy, here we go!!!! So the tech lady says "Did you download the movie "The Italian Job" because we got a report from the MPAA that someone at that account downloaded copyrighted material. I'm thinking, that's it! I'm toast. But she basically said that as long as the movie is removed from the computer and I am aware that the cable modem account could be terminated if done again, then they will reconnect.

whew!!!!

wow - was this a torrent put out there by the industry to catch and warn people??? Has anyone ever had this happen to them?? Just so you know , I got it from Demenoid.com.

Well the lady said they got a report, so yeah I guess they got called by them. The cable comlpany made it sound like it was definitely a warning. I doubt I'm on some list since I don't upload (leech!!!) and I only downloaded that one.

I once got a call from my cable provider warning me about my high upload rate for a month. I was uploading a lot of livesets to friends through icq/msnmessenger back then. They warned me that there is a 1 gb/month upload limit on the cable internet accounts. They were suspicious I was running some sort of shady business operation from my home account. That's Shaw Cable here in Western Canada :|

it's not that they're tracking where you go... they're just tracking what IP address you are leased each time you connect to their network. When the MPAA or RIAA or whoever sees an IP address download a file, they give the time, date, and IP to the cable company, who in turn punishes whoever matches up with the time/date/ipstamp. Just take advantage of everbody else... like Blockbuster/Netflixx/friends, or Gamestop (7-day return policy, no questions asked), etc.

Over here, they've started a campaign to stop any illegal sorftware form being spread, still focusing on illegal games now. To a certain extent understandable, but I really hate them going after students now: they just don't have the money most of the time, especially when it comes to applications and stuff.

I can understand if they're going after the big ones in the scene, making big bucks off copying all that shit, but it seems like now they're actually going for the small time guy, that can't pay for it and can only get things by duplicating them. Lame as phuck if you ask me.

yep. isp's are capping uploads (optimum online comes to mind as one of the worst, they will suspend your account if they decide you are using too much bandwidth, i am told), & more than likely they have the ability to know what you are downloading. i find it hard to believe the the mpaa is sophisticated enough to figure it out themselves.

Well, you can't blame the movie companies for protecting their assets. Keep in mind that it does take ridiculous amounts of money to create movies- so much more than music.

I think illegal downloading will ultimately be much more harmful to the movie business than to music. Downloading just makes music less profitable; it could make movies unproducable.

And though it seems like an invasion of privacy, the telephone company does the same thing: it sees who you called, when, and for how long, and it's been doingg so for what, 90 years? It doesn't hear (hopefully) what you talked about, and almost the same thing is what we're seeing here, only BitTorrent sites monitor their files.

you really don't have to worry about what site you get the .torrent file from as long as you don't have to register with that site or, more so, with that torrent's [b]tracker[/b] site. as Hollywood is in the process of cracking down on the torrents hosts, they confront the tracker owners with a choice of dropping the service and giving up the ip logs or facing a lawsuit. you all probly heard the lokitorrent story...

i just read something about legal implications for downloading in Holland. It is legal to download a copy for your self but it is illegal to offer songs movies and such.

Alright man I understand where you are coming from but... Hollywood is a joke. Hollywood blockbusters are crap. They do everything for a buck, which I might add started prior to the advent of the interent/filesharing etc... Hollywood is nothing more than a marketing tool. They are in business of selling you movies/dvds/actors and Pepsi, McDonalds, and whatever other consumer bullshit they can tie in to said blockbuster. Anyway I can go all day.
