How dare you criticize Balance 019!
Btw, Joris Voorn's Balance is still one of my favs, don't care how many tracks etc you got in there, if you want to mix as many, you better mix it bloody well.
never heard this....is it worth buying?

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

for sure, really nice cd. the best of this layering/editing style that has sprung up imo

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

This is not to say that music is good or bad. But I would rather hear a good mix, not the number of tracks and samples read, and edit it. If it is bad, despite all the mixing, it is still bad.

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

I dont think there is any argument with that on this board

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

Well 2012 may be the year I finally stop buying mix cd's. Let down by so many in 2011 and this is the latest one!

Well, actually a bit harsh to say 'let down' as I had never heard a Deetron set or mix before and so didnt really have any expectations.

Barring a couple of good moments (brief ones at that) this is just all over the place. Random mixing, programming and flow. There were times I was genuinely thinking 'Is this EDM?'. First 20 minutes of CD1 are ok, then it plummets a lot, before picking up a little bit.

Balance have been more miss than hit for me. I have tried Voorn, Saul, SOS, Luke Fair, Fortier and Saiz and disliked all of them. Probably won't bother with Funk D'Void Balance 21 unless I'm really blown away by the sampler!

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

^^^ Dude, if you disliked Luke Fair (specifically CD1) and Fortier then you should definitely change the mixed CDs you listen to.

Fortier's CD is ridiculously good.

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

Ummmmm....... Voorn's disc 1 is one of my favorites of all time. Not sure how anyone can keep from smiling from ear to ear when that bassline drops in around 15 mins in. Brilliant. Fortier's disc 2 is another classic I'll always have in rotation.

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

im not sure how you can NOT like fortiers or saiz balance. the other ones i can kinda understand. when was the last time you liked a mix/comp?

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

I saw Deetron DJ last week. Solid, no-nonsense house and techno set, extremely well paced, with punch and groove. Also, he played on 3 decks, I didn´t hear one single beat fall out of place the whole night, and there were times when he pulled off mixes that made the 3 trcaks going on at the same time, seem as they had always been supposed to be together.

All in all, at least in technical terms, one of the most brilliant DJ´s I´ve ever seen.

TBH, Saiz´s mix did nothing for me either, it´s not to say that it´s bad, it´s just me, I´ve become pretty tired with the melodic/chunky/tech/prog thing. Fortier´s though, was a real eye-opener for me, at the time.

For sure mate, if you haven't already... its just one of those comps that will always always be in rotation and never get old :)

It's quite simple really - if I listen to Fortier's first ever Kiss FM mix for the Digweed show in 2000, and then I listen to his Balance CD, I like the Kiss mix better than the Balance CD. It is infinitely more memorable, enjoyable and consistent. His Balance CD just had too many quirky tracks on it; music that you have forgotten about as soon as it stops.

The Saiz CD had some good tracks on it, but it was more of an exercise in him showing us all how many tracks and remixes he has made, instead of him playing a selection of the best tracks of the moment.

The last CD's I enjoyed:

James Zabiela Renaissance Life Nick Warren Balance 18 Hernan Cattaneo Renaissance Parallel

Warren is the most consistent dj out there - more often than not he plays decent track after decent track with no mucking about in between.

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

that Zabiela "life" cd is one of my favorites from recent years too. I still listen to it all the time

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

EDM on the whole is headed that way for me. Dunno if it's too much music or not enough stand-out tracks or just boringly put together sets. Or I'm just getting way too old for this and am nostalgic for the good old sounds.

Yep, disc 2 is definitely the best! Ahead of it's time imo

oh man, you guys keep making me want to try out Fortiers balance again. I just cant seem to like it thought no matter how much I try. It's a shame as i generally like his stuff

Maybe you guys aren´t looking in the right places. I haven´t been this excited about EDM in years as I am right now. But it sure as hell ins´t due to the VisionQuest/Hot Creations/Croostown Rebels stadium-handbag-house trinity.

I also loved Fair's balance a lot.. and for some reason Holden's 005 had an impact as well. But overall, Balance 18 is my favorite :)

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

I'm making a guess here but seems to me that Greg doesn't like mixes that start and stop a lot of times? And he likes ones that are more like a DJ-set at a club?

Me, I like mix cds that are NOT like live sets, there's plenty of those for free. Balance 14 is my favorite mix cd on this century.

Re: Balance 020 - Deetron

The last good Balance mix was James Holden 005

thats because it wasnt just a comp of good tracks mixed from end to end, Everyone is already doing that. it was more a concept. a story told by a storyteller. there was more to the programming than just mixing tracks, we get all of that for free nowadays, kudos for him on trying something that he though would be a cohesive album by posting songs that he had a hand in. and it sounded absolutely deep and very emotional.

i think its a balance that you cant soon forget about and ranks it up there with the other memorable balances.

also if you take ANY dj set from 2000 and compare it to an album from 2005/2006, you better expect that it will be different. wouldve been a shame had Chris Fortier's balance sounded like his sets from 2000. and yes different does not always mean better, but its a different sound that shouldnt be compaired fairly. keep in mind everyone was pushing the tech sound during that time and getting away from that melodic prog.

Obviously you're going to have a preference. This isnt a science and is completely subjective, nor am i trying to change your mind.
