Re: London
Media going into overload as usual.
Just had to be evacuated from my office in Watford, UK - about 15 miles north of London. Police intelligence suggested it was going to kick off there. On my walk back to my car, all I saw were parents in the park with their kids, people going about their daily business etc. No sign of trouble at all.
Got me thinking about Michael Moore in Bowling for Columbine when he talked about the fear culture on the TV. And he's right to an extent. This morning I didnt think twice about it, but after the evacuation and looking at the news at lunch I was expecting something to happen.
Re: London
so it was nothing then basically?

In terms of Watford, yes. Paranoid hype.
In some of the London boroughs it is of course happening.
Re: London
I got off work at 5 and all shops were closed , one of the sports shop evacuated everything from inside completely!!!Peckam , Brixton, Croydon and the surrounding areas are dangerous.

i like how that girl filming the kid getting shit stolen from his bag calls the guy stealing stuff a "dickhead" and she keeps filming and does nothing... doesn't even say anything to the kid when he's by himself and RIGHT BELOW HER. unless she's afraid for her own safety, she certainly isn't contributing to peace and harmony.

I know what you are saying, however I think men and women feel different levels of responsibility when it comes to confronting a thief on the street like that.
Re: London
not even so much confronting a thief, but rolling down your window when the kid is right outside and alone and ask him if he's okay or needs help... i can certainly understand not wanting to confront a group of thugs.

its the new culture that's created through social media like tweeter/facebook/youtube .. instead of telling off the offender when something is wrong or informing the authorities people these days would just whip out their phones and film it in order to upload it to facebook or youtube in the fastest time
they are just concerned about how many likes they get on the video rather than what's right or wrong

=#2E2E2E !important]Monday, August 8th, 2011
On the third successive night of rioting and looting in London, the chaos has spread to at least eight new districts in the metropolitan area, the New York Times reports. The violence is also affecting other parts of the country, with riots erupting in England's second largest city of Birmingham.
The riots began in the low-income community of Tottenham following the Saturday police shooting of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old black man. However, the BBC reports that few believe the riots to be a result of the shooting.
As chaos spread across the city, young looters sacked businesses and burned a double-decker bus. As the government struggles to bring the situation under control, the implications of the riots remain unclear
Genuinely staggered by how uneducated people can be (referring to that EDL interview above). The EDL have a branch in my hometown (Luton) and their 'leader' lives here - I went to school with him. He was on Newsnight and Paxman started his interview with 'So the English Defence League......what exactly are you defending England from?'
i've read snippets of people saying the EDL have taken to the streets to protect the shops and homes.
can't find confirmation of this (and I assume that casting the EDL in even the most minimal of a positive light is begging for trouble).
Re: London
My favorite video from the riots so far. More police beatings needed...
