Some CD's I bought recently.....

Picked up a raft of cd's recently from yesteryear, but can't say I was pleased with my purchases to be honest:

Back to Mine: Underworld

I was in no way expecting a CD of Underworld type tracks, but at the same time I was not expecting what is on this CD. Just a bizarre mix of tracks; I'm wondering if they purposefully made it so weird?

Cass: Spundae Interpretations Vol 3

Ok in places, but I can't really recall any standout tracks over the 2 discs. Was this a US only release as I've never seen it for sale in UK?

Hooj: Form & Function/Further

These were released at roughly the same tme, but they are a little bit too laid back for my liking, bordering on mundane in places. Not really my cup of tea.

Parks & Wilson - Painting on Silence

The biggest surprise and let down of the lot really. I don't think this sound has dated well. However if I was hearing this for the first time when it was released I'm sure I would have loved it.

Steve Gerrard: Thinking Out Loud Vol 1

Was expecting more from this but overall it was ok. Did prefer his Kiss FM mixes though.

Anyone got any comments on the CD's above? Kind of glad I didn't pay top dollar at the time of release. Decided to flog them all on eBay now (username gcwhelan if anyone interested)

Re: Some CD's I bought recently.....

I bought therapy sessions: dave seaman + Phil K, like u$s 2-. Nice breaks on Phil K´s, and some good tunes in Seaman´s cd. And also Dave Matthew´s "Some Devil", I love that album and didn´t have it original. I do now, lovely music in there.

I really liked the Cass: Spundae CD. Mind Rewind and The Search are stand out tunes for me.

Re: Some CD's I bought recently.....

I bought Luke Fair's Bedrock CD a few months back and was well pleased with that. I then bought Desyn Massiello's off the back of it and couldn't listen to it until the end. I'm told Johnathan Lisle's is great so I will have a put on that one at some point. I don't tend to go on recommendations from other people when buying CD's.

Re: Some CD's I bought recently.....

Phil K's mix on that Therapy Sessions is brilliant, cracking ending too.

I enjoyed Masiello's Bedrock mix chunky, but nothing too memorable about it.

Was not a fan of Lisle's though, rarely gets a play these days.

That Back to Mine Underworld is fucking awesome. One of the best in the series.

Re: Some CD's I bought recently.....

Guess we have different tastes in tunes, I still really enjoy Painting on Silence. Some great tracks from that time on both discs.

While it does stand out from the typical Back To Mine fair, it is pretty true to Underworld form. If you listen to any of their Lemonworld radio broadcasts from around the same period they have a very similar vibe. For me it reveals the often unexpected directions from which Underworld approach music - the commentary in the radio shows is something that really supports this but this component is, of course, lacking on the BTM CD. It is a very eclectic and surprising mix though! Not an easy one to get into.

The Back To Mine series is more of a reflection of what influenced the artist, and meant to be more of a chill out cd. I'm thinking you might have gotten it with the wrong expectations. But different strokes indeed. It was a great series before it got steadily off the rails. Some other standouts were Nick Warren's, Dave Seaman's, The Orb's and Everything But The Girl.

Re: Some CD's I bought recently.....

Recent CD's I bought:

Amon Tobin ISAM - Did not enjoy it at all. Didn't live up to the hype of that youtube video at all.

Thievery Corporation Culture of Fear - It's good, but no musical stretch. BUT, still, it's a good album.

and in regards to BtM's...

was quite awesome, imo.

Will have to give it another listen sometime, I guess...
