Perhaps. He does have something of the old English eccentric about him. I think a lot of his appeal in his early days was the fact he was such an anti-hero if you like. After years of pop artists of the likes of Abba and Michael Jackson etc etc this guy seemed more real, he seemed more like one of your mates who got lucky than a mega star from some misty land on tele.
He's still doing his thing now and being an awkward, miserable bastard at times - maybe that's the part people in other countries don't get so much?
