I'm a bit drunk right now, and was reading the thread about Tiesto @ Disney Land, the Olympics, etc. Much of Tiesto's crossover success has been accredited to his management and pr teams. I'm just wondering if people think that progressive/acid/tech house could really break through (closer) to the mainstream with the proper forces behind it, or if there is something else about Tiesto and his sound that puts him at the forefront. Thoughts?

QUESTION...
Re: QUESTION...
Fucking Tiesto,i hit the ceiling about Tiesto
tiesto = lame i want to go to his show jsut to experence how shit the crowd would be but then again i would propably cost 40 bucks to see him.
i feel your pain, friends, but perhaps we could get some more relevant answers?
quite a good question for your state of mind... :ROFLMAO:
I think for something (genere of music for example) to become successful in comercial terms there has to be a wide enough audience. You don't start advertising something if you're not sure there is enough customers in the target group of your product to cover your marketing costs. With music, it sometimes so that the media tries to create taste for music that is not yet there. Also, if you want anything to reach large number of people it has to be simple enough.
So answer to your question is yes and no  Yes, because prog is something you could easily create taste for (judging by the fact that it was possible to do so for Marylin Manson music... ) but it would certainly have to change a bit in course of this process - and therefore no, because I'm not sure if you could still call it prog.
On a side note, I think Sasha's pr team is as far as you can get with this type of music. I don't think any other dj form this particular playground has such good marketing. All this talking about ableton LONG BEFORE he actually started using it created such a hype! The fundacion series was also well advertised (in advance too). And just look at the Orlando benefit gig flyers - nothing better for a celebrity than to have a charity show at the right moment. Somebody there is doing their homework.
well, i think its about the electronic music, djs who mix trance get more crowds than djs who do progressive i guess its something about the bitrate of the sets mixed with extasy that gets to the people its not just tiesto vs digweed, check pvd, or avb, they all get big shows all the time, i dont thing its about mostly about promotions, carl cox, steve lawler, big names who dont need further promotions and they dont do as well as these trance djs basicly, trance is the music for the mases
Some time ago I read an (scientific!) article about music complexity. It was some measure designed by profesional musicians to judge the difficulty (in lack of a better word) of a piece of music. The most charging factors were key changes and rythm/beat/whatever changes. The more intricate the tempo and so on, the more complex a piece is. The highest scores were from classical music of course and the lowest for some brazilian dance songs  The conclusions from the article were that the complexity can be quite easily translated to popularity - the less complex music appeals to larger audience, while the more complex pieces are savoured by connoiseurs.
If you used this measure to rank edm genres, trance would probably prove to be teh simplest kind, while prog would land somewhere at the other end. This could explain the differences in popularity. And it also means in order to get prog to the masses it would need to be simplified = it would not be the same prog anymore.
Let's face it. We're the elite of the edm listeners. And let's leave it this way.
Trance appeals to girls. Girls appeal to boys. Boys will chase girls Hence trance will be more popular!!
Fucking Tiesto!!I hate his music!!He play very shit music for me.... :!: Not Question(Tiesto vs.Digweed), Digweed the GOD!!!
Trance appeals to girls.
No woman of mine will love trance. Checkpoint #1 on a first date.
he is popular for the same reason pop music is popular. zero integrity but will play what the less "into-it" fan wants to hear. he plays to the casual fan of dance music and will probaly be playing garage if it ever becomes the new trance. he is a cunt.

Finally the right answer...
Moreover he's a commercial whore, who'd sell out to anything and anyone if necessary to sell...
no comparisson.... digweed is a leyend. an influence to all of us. tiesto is shit. i would like to go to a gig just to check out the babes though.
^ I don't think you're answering the right question...
^ you're right... i got all hyped about it hehehe
i dont know the answer to the question, but i hope progressive/acid/tech house doesnt break into the mainstream, cuz it will become pop music, and will be more like business instead of passion
hes the reality TV of DJs. Everyone hates them but cant stop watching.

not true, girls love deep, sexy, chunky progresive/tribal beats they can dance and be sexy to (nothing like a girl that can move *tomtom we need a drool emoticon ... trance is al about bouncing up and down....

when i meet a girl the second question i ask (are you seeing someone comes first) is if they like electronic music
i think prog/house was real popular in the twilo days because it was asociated with ecstasy... the fall of ecstasy equaled the fall of edm and the rise of hip hop. because of that the rave act was introduced and promoters were afraid of booking edm. i think for it to become popular again it doesn't necessarily have to change, it needs to be associated with something so the less educated listener can enjoy it... if a opular star starts enjoying edm, their audience will start thinking its cool to listen to edm... it has to become trendy to attract the masses..... anyway its all a cicle and it will comeback. look at the popularity of the WMC. every year it gets bigger. look at places like NYC and miami, the UK prog djs still thrive in these places.
believe it or not tiesto is doing us all a favor by exposing youngsters to a for of EDM. these kids will grow tired of trance and move on to greener pastures. so let tiesto capture them, we'll take over soon.
Hope you're right dude...we'll be waiting for them!
Re: QUESTION...
tiesto = incubus (real fans of rock will forget them once they go away) digweed = johnny cash (real rock fans will never forget.) sasha=pink floyd (never be forgotten, but in a different way, ya know?)

agreed. a lot of us probably won't admit they were into trance at some point in their life, even if it was a really short while, but in the long run, it does do some good... eventually people will get tired of the same zap-zap-tilly-zapzapzap sound and think of Tiesto's music as of what NOT to listen too... just give it time.
sorry for the double post.

Digweed
tiesto is obviously a far better dj than digweed if he's gettin booked to play places like disneyland  think of it this way, if he's playin to kids in a theme park, hes not polluting clubs.
I'll need to be completely drunk to write about that guy. :Naughty:
Tiesto smuggles plums.

So totally true!! Hope he plays all theme parks form now on...I never go there anyway.
well when i scrolled through the forum subjects i did see tiesto vs. digweed under "question" so i thought it was some shit like that too, and yes im sure all of us here would agree with you c zavala, but that is sort of obvious. Teisto, is a commercial whore, that did sum him up best. The ppl that i find who listen to him arent really into it at all, but are more the types that listen to anything that comes on the raadio...because they either dont care about good music, and just want to get fucked up, or are just lame ass posers...i went out to eat in williamsburg, ny yesterday in bk with all of the hipsters..some fuckin girl was bobbing her head to some i hav no clu sounded like some techno la bouche bullshit..she probably likes testicle, i mean tiesto. Neverthesless the food was good at that place, and that girl made me laugh..sort of like when i went to hear ferry cortsen at roxy once, for 10 min b4 i left th eppl there were screaming for him but it was so bad, cheesy played out bullshit. i heard tiesto at exit once, he fucked up twice and ppl were chanting his name like it was inentional, i mean the music stopped completely the second time. it was awful but those crackheads and musclefreaks can do whatever it is they do...without me
In my professional opinion, Tiesto is shit! he's worse than that asshole...rrr...what's his face there...The Irish guy..Oh yes, Oakenfold. Before he was big, I gave him a shot, twice...one time he was just blah! :? The next time, just awful
fabric 20 is what jib is listening to right now. spring training is underway...Go Yankees!
^ I don't think you're answering the right question...
That's because it's not really a question
jokenfold is irish?????
It has ntohing to do the more or less complex piece of music. More complex it doesn?t mean better. And if you think progressive is "complex music", there are many tracks made with one single note of bass, kick, hi hat and one large sound... there isn?t even a melody... I don?t agree with you or that cientific magazine. Anyways, tiesto rocks!

I thought this thread was going to be about who would win in a fight Tiesto or Digweed :)
Really, would you even want prog to go mainstream? If it did, it would start to suck because tons on no talent ass clowns would jump on the band wagon and make the music much weaker. IMO.

most progressive music is a hell of a lot more complex than trance. it has a lot of intricaces that big room trance doesnt contain
They are still both very soft sounds,
What Kind Of Question is This...HAHAHAHAHAHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH
