If you use Chrome, install [URL="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ndmjkapccdjaajegggkopajaabdkjmag"]this extension[/URL] and get a download button on any Soundcloud track.

Only 128kbps for all tracks, but good for those mixes you couldn't download before.

ffs...people calm down...if anyone wants to "steal" music they will steal music...and no post on mercuryserver is going to prevent/enable this...downloading something that you can listen to online...was never really a problem...at least not that I am aware...

I know lots of people here make a living OF music and thats great...but some people live FOR music and earn 250 euros a month so get off your high horse! I´m kind of on the fence about this.

Anyone who thinks it´s OK to DJ with 128kbps MP3´s, or anyone who enjoys listening to music at such bitrate, is a moron, in my book. On the other hand, the world is basically made up of morons.

I´m trust the "average" MS user is not one such moron and would use this responsibly, on the other hand, this will eventually spread out to said morons.

Who cares really? Ripping streamed music is nothing new.

If artists are so worried about it they wouldn't host FULL "non-downloadable" tracks/sets it on Soundcloud in the first place!

Soundcloud has become a better alternative to MySpace (music promo). However, this was not the original intention of it so if there's loop holes then so what. Expect abuse as with everything online.

erm... this wasn't meant to be a thread informing MS folks about how to steal music, just how to get those mixes you really like--which are not downloadable on Soundcloud--onto an iPod or CD-R (which is a good thing for me). If it were a button that gave you a download of new tracks at the original uploaded bitrate, I would inform Soundcloud myself.

You are right people will steal, what really pisses me off is when people give pathetic justifications. I would respect someone more for just admitting they want to steal to get it for free , not a lot more:lol: Illegal recording , or as is happening with Hernan's radio show, putting up crap links to something that is freely available in good quality, are what disturb me more. I would really hate to think any Dj I knew would steal tracks to play out. It's stealing tools !

I live for music ! It's the most important thing in my life. You don't have to settle for stealing crap quality music. In fact if you are going to steal at least make it something worthwhile. :lol: There are incredible amounts out there of every type of music .

I think it's sad to expect abuse. But we all know that's the way I feel :lol:

Well I know for a fact taht when you rely on your 512 kbps connection for internet and earn less than 300 E for a month of work...your moral priorities are focused on what you will eat, where you will sleep and what you will wear rather than doing good by a Dj who earns a fair living. I am not ashamed to admit that I only buy vinyl...and comp cd's. The sheer volume of music I go through....would leave me broke and I download everything....have a quick scan and delete about 80%. I never pretended otherwise...with that in mind i spend about 100 - 200 pounds a month on music...

so in say a few months when other sites catch on to the fact that this can be done u wont see high quality rip options ?

we all know whats happened with youtube downloaders in recent times

imo this is bad news for people who wish to break into the industry and show their warez... the good thing about soundcloud was the fact that say u could upload say a 256 mp3 ( or 320 ) and on playback it would add a sort of low fi effect over the track which would be present if someone recorded it... i dont know how the ripper work buts i,m sure its not recording the track as a human would thus bypassing the thing i,ve just talked about.

p.s. i don't upload "masters" to soundcloud for this reason and i know a lot of people that have stopped using soundcloud for things like this popping up... i guess it was inevitable though

All 'soundclouds' on Soundcloud are 128kbps, and as far as I know, they always have been. The track is converted in the transcoding process. Hi-def rips of Soundcloud tracks are impossible unless someone hacks their databases.

That link just states they're thinking about upping the bitrate, not that the bitrate isn't 128 or that they're going to change it.

The extension doesn't rip anything. It just outs the music file embedded on the page and gives you download access to it. That's why you get the weird alpha-numeric file name on the download.

And I don't understand what you're saying about 'recording'. Nothing is recorded in the upload/transcoding process, nor in the what the extension does.

Soundcloud's "previews", as YouTube's videos, are already downloaded by any computer that visits their sites, most people just don't know it. As for stealing, I've seen people playing 128kbs in sets they posted on the Web and many times they've been caught red-handed. That's the only risk.

But I can say I am incredibly careful now, if I see something uploaded I try and find it on an artist's page or soundcloud. and I have never stolen a track . I am also very selective. Obviously I don't Dj but I do have a beatport account and buy tracks I love in wav.

Lame (the mp3 encoder) at 320kbs sounds perfectly clean on demanding soundsystems, while anything lower is easy to spot. The problem comes with software-driven dj sets that are meant for the Web and, let's admit it, with warez blogs. I think it was [url="http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/djdb.php?id=822"]Trickski[/url] who recently got ripped by some blogger who passed the Soundcloud preview of their EP for the real deal after a transcode.

But, I'm wondering. What about Proton Radio then, or BBC for that matter, shouldn't THEY be resentful?

I really can't be asked to argue about this...you definitely don't earn 10 euros a day or 1.20 per hour and don't make a choice between eating for a day or buying a CD.... find thats the bottom line here...

Music definitely makes life better, in fact contemplating a world without it is totally incomprehensible! In fact the absolute best thing about this age is that there is just so much amazing music out there and just given to us!! But it is available without piracy. :) I am just incredibly grateful for that. :D I remember when you had to buy your music or steal it from a music store :lol: Even stealing was a lot harder then :lol: And it was bloody expensive !!

Btw You still don't know how fortunate or unfortunate my life has been, I've had more time to fit lots in :lol:

lol u,ve completely missed the point, if its not downloadable in the first place its for a reason...if u think about what u said it kind of proves my point that the software must have access to the servers to out the file and make it downloadable in the first place...yea nothing is recorded but if u upload a 320 mp3 to soundcloud and make it downloadable the person downloading it will receive a 320 from the server which means that they are stored on the server as what it was uploaded as originally ( although playback will be different on the soundcloud page )... actually its pretty hard to find info on how the process works on line as i,ve been looking for it all day lol
