Hey Troy, thank you for taking the time to sit down with Saturday Sessions team prior to this weeks Monza.
Name: Charles T. Pierce
Age: Old enough to know better
Nationality: Regrettably American .
Who is Troy Pierce?
A lucky guy from Indiana.
So, you are part of the Minus family how did this come about?
Serendipitous events.
This is your Ministry of Sound debut, what are you most looking forward to?
Definitely the sound system. We did a small rehearsal there last year before the Contakt show at Brixton Academy and it rocks.
Have you heard much about the club before this gig?
It seems sort of legendary from my perspective. I think one of the first dance music CD’s that I bought was some Ministry of Sound Double CD. I can very vividly remember listening to it on the way to some sketchy house party in a really ghetto part of Cincinnati Ohio. I was driving a Silver Chevrolet Blazer and kissed a funny girl named Stephanie in the attic while on acid. Oh those where the days.
How would you describe your style?
In the attic while on acid…
Your productions are often quite dark, what influences you when putting together a track?
Part of me wants to just keep putting “in the attic while on acid” for all of these questions but that would be sort of annoying after awhile so… I have never sat down with the goal of making something “dark” it just sort of always ends up that way. I guess the choices I make when putting together a track come from a lot of different places but more often than not I go for spooky sounds and darker melodic elements. My mom told me the other day that she is not really sure if making scary tracks is so conducive to making people dance. My reply was that if I like it, there has to be a few people out there that are also into it. Thanks mom.
Are there any remixes that you have made over the last few years that you tend to play at every gig?
Not really, I always try to play new stuff and keep it fresh.
Where has been your favourite place to play so far?
That’s hard because there are so many cool places, Tokyo is always good, Berlin, Medellin. The Standard rooftop in L.A. was amazing last summer, Cocoliche in Buenos Aires.
What are your plans for the summer?
Increase my output musically, make some happy house my mom can be proud of.
How would you describe Monza parties, this is the first at Ministry of Sound. Is there anything the crowd can look forward to?
The guys who do the party are great so there is always a really good vibe, lots of fun.
Have you played many of the Monza showcases previously?
I have played for Monza quite a few times in Ibiza over the years but I think this is the first proper “showcase” outside of Ibiza.
Growing up in Chicago must have played a huge part in your style, what were you listening to when you were younger?
Just for the record I grew up near Chicago, like 4 hours away which for the States is close enough to drive to on the weekends. I always really liked the Chicago “acid” stuff from labels like Traxx and a lot of the Dance Mania records.
What is the most important thing about playing a set?
To give the people what they paid for. An intoxicating soundtrack for debauchery.
Are there any tracks at the moment that have been going down well with the crowd?
Anything by Maetrik, I am really into his stuff at the moment, dark and driving with a splash of funk.
You are described as cutting edge, what is it that sets you apart from any other DJ?
Am I really? Wow, I had no idea… I guess I am a bit into technology, using Ableton and Traktor together to hopefully come up with something interesting every night.
Do you take influences from other artists?
From time to time… I have been working a lot with Heartthrob in the studio recently and it’s always interesting to see how someone else works. I am definitely stealing some of his tricks.
What is the best tune that you have heard this year?
Robert Loves Summer – I Feel Hood
If you could go back and play any event all over again which one would it be?
None really, the good ones I prefer to leave them as they are and the bad ones I would rather just forget about.
Thanks Troy! See you Saturday
