Has anyone got one?

Ive got mine on my Windows desktop and its THE BEST upgrade you can do to a computer. Got an 80gig Intel X25-M and considering its one of the fat kids of the bunch, my computer starts in 1/3 of the time it took before. Its setup as a boot disk (obviously) and all the porn and stuff are in regular hard disks.

Read and write speeds are increased at least by 150%, nowadays with SATA3 you can push up to 300+ MB/s...

Ordered one for my Macbook now, got a Crucial C300 128Gb for almost half the price of the Intel from a year ago :evil:

i got the same intel ssd a couple months ago. price was reasonable and the longevity of this drive should be pretty good considering it's flash memory. my system loads in about half the time, overall i'm very satisfied

Is there a way to move the original C drive over to an SSD without having to reinstall the entire OS and all programs? A clone of the installed C drive to the SSD so to say.

My brother has one in his desktop and the speed in which it boots up is unbelievable. However, I'm still waiting for them to hit the price/size sweet spot before I get one.

Even if source and destination drives/partitions have different sizes? RIght now I have reserved 100 GB for my C: drive on a 500GB HDD but the SDD will have no more than 80 or 120GB for sure...far too expensive still and I only need it to speed Windows and most used programs up.

Most partition manager programs can work around that.

Absolute worst case:

-Partition the 500GB off, then copy the (now) smaller "C"..unless you're keeping the 500 as a pure backup, then you can just format it out anyway.

I'm jealous. I just rebuilt my computer a while ago and wanted to go SSD, but at the time to get a total of 150gb space was like 500 dollars. It just wasn't worth it in my opinion. Now I want to get one.

This OS is not the problem..installing all programs and gathering the usernames and passwords for them is the pain in the ass lol.

In your opinion, do you think these thinks can help prevent Hard Drive failure? I am on my 3rd hard drive on this macbook (white 2007 model).

Sadly nothing can prevent that. HDs tend to fail because of physical damage and overheating. SSDs do not suffer from neither of those since its just flash memory stuck together and have no moving parts that cause friction. However, they are not bulletproof, some fail just like RAM memory fails and recovering data is not as easy as it is on a HD.

So...use time machine regularly and you will be fine.

Plus put one of this babies on your Macbook and you wont need a new computer for a while.

Very cool, and informative and thanks ganjamo for the info.

With regard to overheating, I notice that when I have my computer on certain surfaces the fan tends to come on more often. Is there any truth to that? Or am I imagining it? How do you prevent overheating?

floridaorange, theres a cool widget called[URL="http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html"] iStat[/URL] that shows you a lot of your macbooks info. You can see there the temps and the fan speed. If you use your laptop in a surface thats uneven such as in bed the computer cant clear hot air very efficiently and it might have to turn the speed up on the fans to be OK. Thats the CPU fan though. On Macbooks and in most other laptops HDs does not have fans.

definitely not so sure about these now... i think they are a bit of a security risk if you happen to store personal info on your hard drive.. reading this article says that you can typically over write a cell 10000 times before those cells become damaged which is fair enough to the average user but if like me you typically erase personal data with secure deletion programs then if you take the gutmann method ( 35 passes ) typically on ssd's you could over write them just 285 times before the cells damage beyond repair ( i could be wrong here ) which in my eyes puts me off buying one especially when price is to be considered here also.

Got myself a Vertex 3 120 GB SSD last week and I luv it! Windows boot till everything is ready for me is about 20 seconds and shutting down is done in 5 lol. When I copy files inbetween the drive and the amount is below 1 GB, I barely see the copy progress window coming up before it's done. 500MB write speed ftw! Also mirroring my former 250GB C partition to the 120 GB SSD worked like a charme so I am very happy with the new investment.

i,m the opposite side of the scale, got one yesterday, osz solid 3 120 GB, installed it @ 11 AM and was still trying to sort out performance issues @ 12:30 AM, its all enable this, disable this, do this do that... finally roughly about and hour ago i,ve got it to a state where i,m happy ( almost ) but i,ve yet to to put it under stress, i,m currently sitting with 27 GB of stuff on it and absolutely shitting myself about putting more on it.... so far i,ve re routed temp and tmp files, google chrome cache, internet explorer cache/temp folders to other hard drives and that has helped a lot, freezes quite a lot actually and aint really good @ multi tasking ( i.e. listening to music on media player while installing windows updates... yea i know pretty simple eh ? )

we all know about avoiding jmicrom controllers well i'd also like to add sandforce controllers to that list, really pissed off with it to be honest, in 2 minds about sending it back... i should of got the intel one @ the same price but this was at least double the write and read speeds so i though what the hell, big mistake... this is my most disturbed computer experience by far YET :lol:

Toyed with the idea of replacing the Macbook Pro's DVD drive with an SSD to run Mac OS off it ... how much are SSDs these days, is 120GB the most price-optimum size?

i paid £150 for mine, you can pick them up pretty cheaply but as i learned the hard way its vital you do research on the controller in the drive also you need to make sure you're motherboard has an ACHI option but be prepared to fork out quite a bit for ones with the best controllers, if i had put the one i got yesterday and installed it in a windows laptop i would of been screwed

system specs please ?

this is over a week of nothing but problem after problem with my solid 3 and as usual i,m going from pillar to post with ocz trying to sort it out... the new firmware update was supposed to fix all problems but its far far far worse than it was before lol

i,m currently back on a mechanical drive and the ssd is sitting idle and also empty and i keep getting messages saying a drive has connected when the truth it has alwasy been connected... the sandforce controller is fucked up man

this is what i like about ocz!!! when things start getting bad they just move onto another company to design their controllers for them, its a disgrace... for a company like that i would expect at least a high level of testing before they went and put it all out to the public, i,ll never buy ocz stuff again... man all you have to do is look @ the forums for the drives on the ocz site just to see how many people are having problems... i honestly don't think i,ve seen on positive thread in there yet

As for your comments about OCZ eah...maybe you are right but my company deals a lot with custom built high performance machine...(I have complete and utter beasts that I use for trading) we get to send shit back and get it replace by nxt day mail...for free...but I can honestly say I haven't had any issues so far.
