iPod Question

I've been encountering a problem when I upload music to my iPod via iTunes. If it's a set that has multiple parts (eg: Steve Bug - Live at Harpune, Dusseldorf (08-18-2004) Part 1, ...Part 2, ...Part 3, ...Part 4, etc) it doesn't load up properly and none of the files can be played in the iPod. When viewing the contents of my iPod in iTunes, the set contains the proper info (size, length, etc). This also happens with Digweed's Kiss sets (John Digweed - Kiss 100FM (01-16-2005), ...(01-23-2005), ...etc). It seems as though it has a problem with multiple long file names under the same 'Artist' name. Just curious as to whether anyone else has been having the same issue as we all tend to upload similar things (sets with long names). It's very tough to verbalize, but I hope I've made my problem as clear as possible.

For those that may wonder, I am using the most up-to-date version of iTunes (but it's been doing this with all previous versions). If you press play on one of the file names in question it tries to load for a half-second and then proceeds to the next file in the artist list. I can however reconnect my iPod, remove the file from it, and re-up the file and then it will work fine. It's just a pain in the ass.

TIA

Buy one of these http://www.archos.com/products/overview/gmini_xs200.html

i haven't had any problems with mine, but i do usually take out any spaces in the filename and try to shorten it as much as possible, for example: Kiss100(Jan092005)JohnDigweed.mp3

I have the 4th generation 20 gb model

#354455Post 4 of 36

That's ok, I'm perfectly happy with my iPod - I wouldn't trade it for the world. This is a software related issue that should be pretty easy to solve. I was just curious as to whether anyone else has run into a similar situation.

Cheers Pataky, i think everyone hates you but me!

#354475Post 7 of 36

Thanks dvs, I guess I will try that to see if it works any better. Cheers for the suggestion.

#354492Post 8 of 36

I also shorten the file name usually by the date itself for example for the Jan 23rd set I'll just rename 1/23/05. I haven't had any problems so far when playing back on my ipod.

#354507Post 9 of 36

I don't shorten the file name much, but I have the 1st gen 5 GB iPod. So it could be a size thing.

#354514Post 10 of 36

I have a Mini and I always update the ID3 in order to be able to browse by artist. I guess I can just shorten the ID3 and include everything in the Title line beginning with the artist name. I just did it again right now but had to load a 6 part Steve Bug set 1 part at a time and it works fine. I'll give the shortened file name a try next time.

I got the 4th gen 40 gigger and I went through 17 gigs of music straightening out the ID3 tags in iTunes and I didnt have any probs

#354520Post 12 of 36
I went through 17 gigs of music straightening out the ID3 tags in iTunes
Is that not the biggest pain in the ass? It's like 1/2 my day is spent sorting out ID3 tags. Why in the hell does it take so long? I have a prog that I can set the parameters to do it automatically, but in order to get it the way I want I'd have to adjust every file name. Seems like I just can't win!

#354533Post 13 of 36

I second dvs's suggestion, in particular I'd avoid any special characters in the file names, especially peroids and commas

#354538Post 14 of 36
in particular I'd avoid any special characters in the file names, especially peroids and commas
Yeah, I definitely avoid any use of special characters. The only exceptions are hyphens and parentheses.

Are you running the latest iPod update?

#354605Post 16 of 36

Only the latest iTunes update. Is there a firmware update for the iPod itself?

**Edit: Just visited the Apple site and there was a firmware update on Jan. 11. Downloading and installing now. Thanks for the suggestion Mike.

that reminds me, what are id3 tags?...and why does itunes sometimes stall when writing the id3 tags?

thanks, steve

Re: iPod Question

my gf had an issue with playing tracks. they would seem to load, then abort. after a few days it righted itself, not sure why this happened either.

#354674Post 21 of 36
that reminds me, what are id3 tags?...and why does itunes sometimes stall when writing the id3 tags?

thanks, steve
An ID3 tag is a small chunk of data at the end of the mp3 file that contains data such as Artist, Genre, Year, Album, Title, etc. The lag associated with updating/writing ID3 tags is definitely a pain in the ass. I'm not sure why it takes so long to rewrite the tag, but I've noticed the larger the file size, the longer it takes to update.

#354697Post 22 of 36

thanks ska, Yea, I'm sure that the long size of dj sets creates that lag.

peace, steve

buy another one!!!

Thanks for digging up this 3 week old topic to post your opinion. I never thought of that until now, but thank god you posted or I may never have considered it.

#369320Post 25 of 36

I have the Ipod 4th gen with a 20 GB HD...can somebody confirm that this damn battery lasts for max. 5 hours (and not 12 like claimed) when you only listen to sets (1 hour +) and not to tracks? :x

#369360Post 26 of 36

No way man. I have the 40 GB iPod photo now and before that the regular 40 GB iPod and both lasted much longer than 5 hours but not as much as 12 when listening to nothing but 1+ hour DJ set files. How long have you had yours? It could be defective. You can always replace your battery on your own if your Pod is past warranty. I've heard it's a fairly painless process.

#369498Post 27 of 36

dude, i have the same problem, it sucks. but a small price to pay right?

Re: iPod Question

If you play a continuous mix, does it stop and load at the end of each track or does it just play it like a cd player?

Thx btw this is my post 100!!! yayyyyyyy for me! :Homer:

#369754Post 29 of 36

If it's a continuous mix then it's all one track anyway, right? How would the iPod know where to insert track-start and track-stop points unless it somehow was capable of reading a cuesheet?

Re: iPod Question

^^^^

What I mean is, for example..... I rip my GU18 track by track and then I upload it in to the ipod, will it load at the end of each track or will it just jump to the next one with out stoping????

#370142Post 31 of 36

Ah, sorry. I don't think I've ever loaded a track-by-track disc on my iPod. Maybe someone else can shed some light on that.

#370198Post 32 of 36

I own the U2 20g ipod and so far its the best thing ive ever invested besides my Inspiron XPS notebook. I had 15gb, 20gb 3rd gen and sold em to friends so i could get into a 4th gen which i love to death.

Re: iPod Question

What I do to have all my sets in order if for example its a four part set, is to keep it simple. Make sure all your fields in filled in exactly the same. One letter off or an extra field filled in can throw whole the thing off. When filling in the info, this is how I have mine set up:

Name: Live @ Pacha 07-29-04 Part 1, 2, etc.

Artist: Deep Dish

Genre: House

I leave the rest of the fields blank. Hope this helps. :D

i know what you're saying. i have the exact same question. when you rip a compilation cd, it doesn't save without breaks. it'll break between every track. i've always wondered if there was a way to get rid of the breaks.

#370277Post 35 of 36

Bypass this problem and rip your CD into one mp3 file with no breaks. You can use Exact Audio copy for doing this and get it for free here: http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

When importing a CD to your library using iTunes, go to Advance->Join CD Tracks. This will join it into one file.
