Re: OS X Lion
Using Snow Leopard here. How different is it? Are there differences that I'll notice right away, or is it more the sort of thing that I'll only notice after playing around with it for a while?
Re: OS X Lion
Got the developer copy but looks like they've made it harder to get it on Hackintosh setups. No doubt someone will come up with a bootloader to solve that.
Not that enthralled by Mac OS tbh. Far more comfortable with Windows 7 which seems just as fast for the most part.

Re: OS X Lion
OS X Lion should be an incremental update, not a lot of cosmetic changes. Some new apps like Mail, Mission Control, etc.
Re: OS X Lion
It looks that way. Stuff that could have been put into Snow Leopard really. Looks like a release for the sake of a release.
Re: OS X Lion
I have been using it on my main development machine, 17" MBP, this week and aside from the occasional bugs this is going to be a solid release. Even though this is on a separate new partition it still seems quicker than Snow Leopard was for me on a new install. If there are any Mac users on here who are having any doubts about trying it, don't worry. Just partition your drive and use it as a secondary install. Mail, iCal and Mission Control are very nice new features.

Re: OS X Lion
installed this today and now my computer feels like a fucking iPod. gah
Re: OS X Lion
Because? Mission Control?
Re: OS X Lion
yeah, and the gestures and the way the scroll bars look, feel and work.
stacks seem like a better way to get to stuff in your workflow faster, since they've got better keyboard support.
Full screen apps are sweet, but I want support for Libre office.
Little snitch has been going off every 5 minutes since i updated too, I wonder what data they want...
Re: OS X Lion
the new mail is worth the $30 by itself though

I've been very ambivalent about that :(
Re: OS X Lion
Updated. Launchpad feels pretty useless, reverse scrolling is stupid. Otherwise things seem to work. I'm glad they fixed the window buttons for iTunes, and overall subtle changes to the UI, actually like the new scroll bars and the 'flatter' look.
Not feeling huge speed improvements, but actually seems to run cooler.
Re: OS X Lion
^^ I had to set the scrolling to normal mode, the reverse scrolling was weird for me... Also hate that the "versions" feature only works with textedit and iWork, should work with MS Office too.
Boot time for me has dropped like 20 or more seconds and overall the OS is faster :).
The only thing that im still waiting for is TRIM for SSDs :(.
Re: OS X Lion
Yeah, I want versions and fullscreen on all my apps!
Re: OS X Lion
yes true the reverse scrolling is a bit weird but more natural when think about.. full screnn apps also cool. will wait to install it in my macpro though because some app wont work. for now only in the laptop.
Re: OS X Lion
So I got to choose between a Mac and a PC at my new job and have a MacBook. I'm not an apple fanboi but I am getting used to it, once I get the keyboard shortcuts memorized. I have an external apple keyboard which I love. It being so small and close to the table really helps reduce wrist strain.
The new Air's are giving me a chubbie. If I didn't just buy this new PC last year I'd throw down for a Mac Mini as it looks like it will play Blizz games which is really all I will ever play.
Re: OS X Lion
Does anyone know if/how I can fix these things:
*No library visible in the /user directory (WTF fuck off apple)
*Don't open "all my files" whenever I make a new finder window (fucking useless)
*show diskspace used/available in finder windows
This Lion is pretty shit for me...it's been a pain in the ass getting Macspeech dictate and parallels to work right.
Re: OS X Lion
^^ yes.
open terminal and type: chflags nohidden ~/Library/
open finder preferences, new finder windows open: select different dropdown
in the finder, select view: show status bar
Re: OS X Lion
^^ yes.
This rocks. Thanks. I have been wanting to hide all of those crap misc dir's under my homedir. I'm still a Mac n00b.

Re: OS X Lion
Will the new Mac Minis (the $799 ones with the radeon cards) play starcraft2/wow?
Re: OS X Lion
wow probably, sc2, i dunno...that ran kinda shitty on my macbook pro
Re: OS X Lion
well that sucks. i thought the mbpros were even more high end than the minis too
Re: OS X Lion
eh, I mean it ran alright. I did the single player campaign i think. It just ran hot as hell on my comp.
Re: OS X Lion
humm...ill research it some more. i bought this pc last year and would try and see if i could sell it without much of a loss and break even if i could switch to a mac that could play blizz games. it would be nice to declutter my desk of all the pc cords and ugly shit.
Re: OS X Lion
Yeah, I don't really use my computer for gaming, so you'd probably have better luck if you pay attention to the specs. I don't know about processors and RAM and all that shit.
Re: OS X Lion
 haha ok

Mac® OS X 10.6.5 or newer Intel® Core 2 Duo processor 4 GB system RAM NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GT or ATI Radeon® HD 4670 or better
I'd say the new Mac mini with the Radeon card should be just fine for Starcraft and WoW. They both have pretty much the same requirements... and the latest Mac minis far exceed the recommended specs.
Re: OS X Lion
hummmmm
Re: OS X Lion
It can run them both on low-mid settings no problem for sure bro.
Re: OS X Lion
here are some benchmarks on the new mac mini...

Re: OS X Lion
Noticed with the latest iTunes, you can now create playlists or add music to a device without adding said music to the iTunes library; which is convenient if you plan on deleting the music without cluttering up the library.
Re: OS X Lion
Is there a way to set it so that two finger scrolling moves backwards and forwards in finder windows instead of just scrolling? I looked for it, but I must be retarded.
Re: OS X Lion
Just use 3 fingers?
If you want customisation, check out BetterTouchTool.

Re: OS X Lion
check your trackpad settings in System Preferences, you can customize all sorts of gestures...
