Installing Cyanogen Android 2.3. Will report results. The information on the internet is so badly laid out, learning from trial and error.

Re: About to do my first Root

Yes i found the info pretty bad when i first did it too, people ask for help and then get flamed because the people who understand what they are doing find it simple when it seems a bit of a minefield when you're a noob to it. Oh well, once its done its done. Good luck!

Re: About to do my first Root

I did get Cyanogen 6.1.3 on it, worked very well, but I'm trying to go back to stock because HTC Sense has a KEY feature I can't live without i.e. Internet Passthrough. Unfortunately for me, I upped my Software version which won't allow me to root the device again and my google/market place aren't working. So now I'm hunting APKs to try and downgrade the device so I can root it. What an effin nightmare.

Re: About to do my first Root

I can't believe what I've just gone through to get my device back to partially where I want it to be. In the hopes of documenting my journey (in case someone else falls into this pit), I'm gonna go ahead and post what I've done.

I ended up upgrading HTC Sense software to 1.72.405.3 which essentially broke my Visionary rooting ability. In order to ROOT the device again, I have to install 1.32.405.XX but its not as easy as downloading a new RUU and running the installer (simply because your rooting abilities have been destroyed).

So I've had to follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003

Being overwhelmed by the terminology and overall process, I was lost at this command for a couple of hours

"Open up a cmd and go to Downgrade folder, execute:"

I didn't know what the heck the downgrade folder is (and just completely missed the zip file attached to his first post). Then, when rooting the device I hit another roadblock where during the install of the second zip file (i.e. PD98IMG.zip), I got the following error

CID incorrect! Update Fail! Press

If you get this error, you're going to have to repeat all of the above AFTER you have done below

I had to follow this - http://android.modaco.com/content/general-discussion/305672/creating-a-goldcard/ but replace

adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid

TO

adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc2/mmc2:*/cid

continue the process on the page to create a Golddisk and restart the process in this post from scratch. Voila, reboot your device and you now have the basic 1.32.405.XX software back on there. You can now either update to a stable 1.32.405.XX package OR install a ROM Manager of your choice, Visionary (or other rooting software) and upload a rom of your choice. I'm thinking of going with Android Revolution http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840040

Re: About to do my first Root

Sounds like you had fun with it lol. I used the goldcard method when i first rooted my hero and touchhwood, it worked with no problems although it did take a while becasue i was being cautious with it. Still not looking forward to doing it on my next phone whatever i choose!

Re: About to do my first Root

I got the Android Revolution ROM (updated last night) running and its lightning fast. I can't believe a ROM could be tweaked so much that out performs the original that came with the hardware.
