Local Network advice pls ???

I currently have one desktop at home that is connected to my modem via ethernet cable directly.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to split the ethernet so i can run another pc from the same modem in another area of the house? The new PC will be roughly 10m away and i'm looking to hard-wire the whole thing.

Is it a case of using an ethernet switch? An adaptor? A hub? I'm a bit lost in the terminology as never done any other than have one PC in one modem in the past.

All advice appreciated

Cheers

Re: Local Network advice pls ???

Your modem should have more than one Ethernet plug.

maybe you can get a plug to divide it??

Re: Local Network advice pls ???

Ah ok

Thanks Shpira. I was hoping it would be that simple but feared it wouldn't

The modem only has one Ethernet out so splitter is the way.

Thanks.

Re: Local Network advice pls ???

Get a router, they're cheap as shit right now. And if you have a laptop at home, get a wireless one at that.

Re: Local Network advice pls ???

Thanks Kamal, my laptop is shit and doesn't even get used really. The battery is shot so it's mains only ie not very portable. I have another PC in the cellar which has always been internet free and uses only sound/recording software - part of me feels it would be nice and sometimes useful to have that one online but the reality is it would be a distraction most of the time. But may be an option for the future if i get a capable router ?

^ Reading the reviews for that ^ has left me doubting whether it's the best way to go?

Cheers fellas

Re: Local Network advice pls ???

Decent routers these days come with gigabit ports and wireless N. I have been a long time Linksys fan but Cisco have butchered the brand to the best. My next router (whenever the next 802.16 protocol gets released) will more than likely be a different brand. Once you have a router setup, you can connect upto 4 devices via wired connection and upto 250 wireless devices. So yea definitely consider getting one. Moreover, plugging your computer directly into your cable modem is a huge security boo boo. The router will offer a degree of protection and if configured correctly, really be a savior in terms of sniff attacks.

Thanks very much Huggie. That looks like a pretty serious upgrade from what I have now though. It got better reviews than that first thing Shpira found too

Re: Local Network advice pls ???

Just get a wifi router and save having all the cables running around. And in future if you add any devices like laptops, computers, iphones, mobiles, etc, wireless makes it sooooo easy.

Re: Local Network advice pls ???

I think you should go old school and chain everything with bnc/co-ax. No need for a hub with that!

Re: Local Network advice pls ???

Will the PCs be next to each other? I would make the investment and get a wireless router. Running cables all over the place is just painful.

And obviously the convenience of having a desktop or notebook anywhere in the house is ideal.
