What determines the download speed of a file?

Just a random question really. I seem to get different speeds daily?

e.g. if I download a file from Souncloud it seems to do it very quickly e.g. a 2 hour set in about 5-6 mins

Mercuryserver's downloads are above average also

But downloading the set from henry saiz's website and its super-slow - about 30 kb/sec?

Is it the host that determines the speed or is it my ISP?

Re: What determines the download speed of a file?

If the hosts upload bandwidth is larger than yours, you are the limiting factor. And vice-versa.

^ I see. So Soundcloud must be massive and Saiz's website not so!

Re: What determines the download speed of a file?

It also depends on how much stress a site has on their Server at the time you are downloading. If 100 people are downloading a file at the same time, it will cause slower Downloads unless they don't own a mega pipe that can handle it. Download from Soundcloud on the same day when a top DJ puts a new mix online and you know what I mean lol. So it can happen that you download from the very same site in the morning with 1MB per second and in the evening you fall asleep @30k/sec. If you constantly get low speeds from a site, they just don't have a fast Server to provide you with better speeds. If you think the problem is local you can always browse one of the thousand speed test websites to check it out.

Re: What determines the download speed of a file?

it depands on your speed that you have at home, if its fast then your download speed should be fast UNLESS, the website you are downloading from... well you can say sucks and has slow speeds then its their problem.

I think it has to do with how fast the miniature gremlins can move them. If you use something like Bitcomet or whatever, make sure you have port forwarding on, it can make a big difference.

Re: What determines the download speed of a file?

Best way to think of the internet is a like a highway. If you've got a clear road ahead of you then your only limiting speed is the speed of your car so you can bomb it down there like nobodies business. However. if its 6pm and everyone's heading home you'll get stuck in traffic.
