IBM's new Watson supercomputer has been fed with 10s of millions of documents and is using classification routines to answer Jeopardy style questions such as: “Classic candy bar that’s a female [URL="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/s/supreme_court/index.html?inline=nyt-org"]Supreme Court[/URL] justice” — “What is Baby Ruth Ginsburg?”

This is pretty amazing. The IBM team I guess have agreed to have this computer play on TV here soon. Possibly even vs. Ken Jennings.

The hardware behind this thing in interesting, but I want to know about the software and algorithms! This is after all, the impressive part of it.

I don't see what's so great about this.

I could design a computer that could quickly search for non-article terms on the internet and deduce correct answers by finding the highest incidence of it in google. (or bing lol). maybe i'm not understanding what's so great here? it's not like the computer understood Ken's answer on final jeapordy.

Its not hooked to the internet. It is mimicking the human brain and actually understanding all of the nuances and wordplay that are jeopardy questions and for the most part kicked everyones ass.
